August 2015 General Chat

Firstly, Woo Hoo! Summer is here and I am on holiday for a month. It’s greta knowing you don’t have to get up early if you don’t want to, although I was upo at 6:30am this morning to go cycling.

Secondly, sorry about not creating a July General chat post. It was all connected with my health issue, which I will update everyone on in the Sorry for the lack of updates post a bit later today. In short, I am more or less able to use the PC for most things, although I doubt I could actually play a game, mod or map for more than about 20 minutes still.

Lastly, I’ll begin to update the site over the coming days and might even have a little surprise project to post soon.

So, what’s on your mind?

Oh, I’m gonna post more images of my Nook screensaver this week. I now have about 5 Half-Life themed images.

Sorry for the lack of updates

Hi everybody,

I just wanted to apologise for not posting or updating the site much recently. I have a serious neck, shoulder and arm problem and I can’t use the mouse or keyboard for more than 10 minutes with experiencing pain.

In fact,l I was off work for 3 weeks with it.

I have an appointment with the specialist next Monday and hopefully he or she can offer a solution.

For now, I will try to do some admin stuff, like adding the authors missing from the PLAY archives etc.

Fingers crossed I’ll be killing the Combine or Xenians again soon.

Station60Ville – Mapping Challenge Theme Announcement

Station 60 was one of the last Resistance station created. As such it is slightly bigger and better hidden than most other stations.

Its exact location is a very closely guarded secret and even the personnel are taken their blindfolded and with a very circuitous route.

Even its purpose and objective is know to only a few high-ranking resistance leaders.

The Future of Mapping Challenges

With the last two mapping challenges producing few entries than we hoped for, I think it’s a good time to question the mapping challenges.

I have been running these for over 5 years now and there have been ups and downs throughout that time.

What I would like to do with this post is question almost every aspect of them and see if anything interesting comes up.

Archives now include Authors!

From today, users of the PLAY archive pages can now view the author of almost each and every map.

Thanks goes to Jan for writing the code to make it happen, which was harder than it might have sounded because we had to extract the details from the post and put them into a custom field.

There are a few maps and mods that don’t have the details, but those are the ones that got truncated when I moved database servers, but at least it makes it easier for me to find them and then slowly update them.

I have tried to make as few changes as possible to the authors spelling but a couple of times I have made changes. For example I have change the Euro sign for an “e” in the hope that it makes it easy to find.

The Author column is sortable and filterable just like all the other columns, so finding maps by your favourite author should be easier than searching the site.

Donation Drive 2015

Hi Everybody, every year around early Summer I run a donation drive. I don’t like asking for donations, but it’s necessary.

In the past, I have used some buttons and widgets to collect the money, but this year I couldn’t find any I liked (Chip-in has closed).

I will therefore be giving you my PayPal email address and asking you to make donations that way. I know for people without PayPal accounts, that’s not convenient but I can’t see another way to do – if you know a good way, please let me know.

This Saturday 9am EDT / 1pm GMT Don will be livestreaming Gut Reaction on the RTSL Twitch Channel as part of the Classic of the Month event.

Viewing is open to everybody and you don’t need an account with Twitch to watch. Although, you’ll need an account to join the chat (Sorry, not our choosing) but you can follow it without an account.

So, cancel that colonoscopy or whatever other boring but important thing you had planned and get ready for Don’s informative and entertaining playthrough.
