Atom Week – Map Labs Atoms #6 – #10 (featuring AscentVille and ElevatorVille 2)

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

The Map Labs challenges come in a bunch of sizes – Atoms being the shortest challenges at 24 (or 48) hours. Back in March 2021, they ran a straight week composed of 5 Atom challenges.

We at RTSL collaborated with the Map Labs crew again for a couple of these Atoms – AscentVille and ElevatorVille 2. AscentVille was an unused idea back in the Hammer Cup days, and we thought ElevatorVille 2 would be an appropriate theme to interpret for such a short mapping challenge. Can’t Stop Won’t Stop, Gravity, and The Emoji Theme fill out the rest of the Atom Week themes – plus a handful of bonus maps as well.

Anyway, here is the full Atom Week release! Enjoy a whopping 57 short-form maps!

Dark Evening

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

After the disaster that occurred in Black Mesa and the world finding out, government figures have taken action to reduce panic and evacuate people to safety. In a rural area far away from Black Mesa, you are suddenly awakened by your alarm clock, only to listen to a more alarming tone from an emergency TV broadcast…

Dark Evening is an Atmospheric-Horror Source Engine Modification inspired by classic titles such as Silent Hill, while retaining the familiar Half Life 2 style in gameplay.

Dark Evening takes place between the period of Half Life 1 and Half Life 2. You play as Jake Hill, a man in his mid 30’s who is caught up in the skirmish between the human, alien as well as mysterious combine forces that are fighting one another. Despite the odds being stacked up against him, he will have to fight with all the strength he’s got in order to hopefully survive the impossibly challenging circumstances.

Abe’s Spicy Mappack Platter

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Here’s a collection of a handful of maps from longtime RTSL member (and Ville mapper!) ihonnyboy (Abraham Lee). It’s a bit of a hodgepodge of maps in various states, including some dev textures – and at least one you might recognize from an old mapping challenge. But they are all playable and worth a look, if not perfectly balanced. Enjoy!

Southernmost Combine

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Southernmost Combine is an alternate epilogue to Half-Life 2: Episode 2, in which Gordon Freeman is sent back in time to the 1980s to stop a Combine recon deployment happening in the southernmost land of the world. There are a few deviations in gameplay mechanics (more tactical and slow paced, no gravity gun, inventory) but it´s still Gordon fighting the combine and rebels helping him to achieve it. This is a small episode consisting of a varied set of locales with unique art made specifically to bring Source to the look of the South American region in the 1980s.

Halloween Horror 3: Bone Room – Map Labs Test Tube #11

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

We’ve all come to love the annual Halloween Map Labs challenge. This year the challenge was only a Test Tube, so mappers only had a week and a half to build their scary, creepy entry. The theme was (B)one Room – the ever popular Map Labs motif now applied to the Halloween challenge, so mappers had to make a single room spooky!

This challenge proved to be as popular as the best of the Map Labs contests – with a whopping 28 entries (including 5 bonus maps). Enjoy!

Deeper Down

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

In 2013’s Half Life 2 mod Deep Down, Jim Partridge took several key aspects from Episode Two, Alyx and the car, and expanded on these in an attempt to re-create that amazing Half-Life 2 feeling that everyone is looking for. Now, with seven additional years worth of level and environment design experience, Jim has taken another swing at the concept. With thirteen almost entirely new maps, new environments, new gameplay concepts, new puzzles, custom models (care of Ed Vincent), and original music (from Anicator), Deeper Down asks you to hit the road one last time and take down the one enemy who’s always been watching.

  • Toxic
  • Teleport
  • Liberation
  • Vertical
  • Episode One
  • Two Rooms
  • Think Tank
  • Companion Piece
  • Back on Track

So here is FusionVille 2, Map Labs #10. It has 10 entries along with 2 bonus maps. Hope you enjoy, there are some pretty unique maps here!

Eye Candy – Map Labs Test Tube #8

for Half-Life 2: Episode Two

This Map Labs challenge focused on purely visuals – make a pretty map, gameplay optional (and did not count toward the score). This was a Test Tube, so the mappers only had about a week to pull off the best-looking map they could.

This time there were a whopping 28 entries (including a bunch of bonus maps, and adding another fantastic background map). Enjoy!
