1. Phillip says Play It!

I am breaking my own rules now because I am posting my review even before I have finished the mod. Well, that’s not strictly true, I haven’t reached the end of the mod but I have finished playing it.

I’ve given it a PIN imnage because you should definitely try it if you like POKE646 and other partial conversions.

Visuals
I don’t really have much to say for this section. Unless I played the original again and made a direct comparion then I can’t honestly notice an difference. Sure there are player shadows, which flicker, you can see you own feet and watch your knees as you crocuh walk, but that’s all I noticed.

Gameplay
Okay, here’s my problem. The way the movement works is driving me crazy. It’s related to the Rebirth code and in all honesty I hate it. I really dislike the way the screen keeps moving is small random circles. Next is what happens when you turn your head quickly, it bounces back a small amount. lastly, is the way the head tilts when you jump. Syops is doing great things with the code but I can’t endorse these kinds of movement changes.

Layout/Design
As I mentioned in the breif descriptiom, there are no changes to the level design, so commenting on that would be unfair for this upgrade.

Summary
Probably only for serious fans or those who have never played the original.

5 Words Or Less Review

Too many movement changes

2. Play It Later

I agree with Phillip on the screen movement; the small jolts that appear after you’ve moved your head are annoying and not very realistic (if that’s what the author is going after). I’ve also noticed how incredible slow the character moves when you’re crouching near the edge of a ledge, almost like I’m moving with the speed of a snail. Jumping while moving forward will make you speed up though.

Apart from that it’s actually quite good; I like how the screen isn’t completely frozen when mobile, it actually feels like the character is breathing (I loved that in the first Unreal game; you could see how the screen slowly went up and down). The weapons feel really good and are fun to shoot although I’ve noticed a few bugs like how incredible inaccurate some of the weapons are while also being way too weak, especially the stronger ones like the Magnum and Barrett sniper rifle.

I’ve also noticed that the comic book scenes has the upper half cut off making it impossible to read what it say on the two upper rows.

All in all a fun mod. If you’ve already played the original mod when it was released (as I did) I’d still recommend playing through it again just for the new gameplay changes.

1. For some reason when ever i try to play the mod the Heads on the Male Assassins are not there (I have not checked the female assassins but i feel like it might be the same) Plz help

3. Play It Now!

While I give it a play it now I did have problems.I use headphones when I play and the volume will not stay locked. It switches back to 3/4 full after a few seconds.Extremely hard on the ears.Since this game is VERY hard on the eyes because of the bob and weave thing I stopped alot and when trying to load a save it sometimes took 5 or six tries without locking up.

Now the action is very good.Same as it was in the first version.I think the textures, heck the whole environment looks a bit crisper than it did the first time.Just get rid of the bob and weave and that stupid lag after you take a bullet before you can go quick and it could be a personal fave.

4. Play It Now!

Enjoyable, I really didn’t mind any of the movement changes, I thought they were a nice touch. The gameplay is good, though it was a bit hard on normal, the weapons were fun, although I did notice some glitches with them, most notablythe shotgun ejecting 2 shells, one after you fire, and one after pumping.. Not a big deal though.

Think Twice

Although I recognize all the work & enthusiasm that was put on this mod, I must say that I didn’t actually like it.First off, the head bobbing turns out to be quite annoying (well, that’s nothing new as PP already pointed that out); there are games that have implemented this feature successfully (even old games like Turok: Dinosaur Hunter), though in BOR it makes you feel like you’re carrying a heavy load on your back.
Then you have that “bloom” effect feature, I can play HL2Ep2 with bloom effect activated and it runs quite smooth, however, in BOR there was a ridiculous FPS drop when I tried to activate it.
As for the rendered shadows, I’ve seen better… anyway, if I wanted to play a revamped HL1 then I’d play HL:S.
These enhanced versions of Gold Source are kinda pointless to me and I prefer to play the good old HL1 with its outdated gfx, but hey! that’s mi opinion, I’m sure there’s plenty of pp who are fascinated with this mod 🙂

Amazing layout and mod. For a modification of Half-Life 1 engine it went above any expectations. Even in Beta Edition, this mod rocks and is all it’s supposed to be in this form, too. Gz to SysOps and team.

7. 23-down

I’m the same opinion like Naked-Headcrab.

Remakes of Hl1 mods for hl1 are really pointless. Last example in that case was Heart of Evil. The work put into it was amazing and they also redesigned the maps a little bit put new voices in etc.

Still numerous other things were taken out in that remake a lot of the atmosphere was lost.

As for this mod here: Graphic isn’t everything. People still playing half-life1 do not care for smooth graphics.

I’m however sure this remake is fantastic and a lot of work was put into it.

8. Marc

Pardon me but can you play this on the NON-STEAM HL(the WIN version)?

9. 23-down

Just try it out. 😉

Copy it into your half-life folder.

I’ve tried to play this a few times now, in the Steam, but whenever I die and auto-reload it crashes with the looping heartbeat thing…..Weird, as not only can I not remember any HL1 mods crashing, even my HL2 ones only do it if their serious issues…..

I might try the DLL thing suggested above, unless anyone has any other suggestions?

I’m on XP SP3 on a mediocre PC……1Gb memory & a GeForce 6200 card, all dricers well up to date…..

🙁

Im stuck at the subway station, none of the doors seem to open, any help?

13. Ratzoid

I tried the “dll” thing and it didn’t work…. they really didn’t say where to put the dll’s. The only way I got it to work was use another dll from another mod. Experiment until one works. I thought it was the Half-life client dll but it wasn’t . I have the old mod too and the way it runs for me there’s no difference. Except the original uses the text it is supposed to where the Redux doesn’t.. got me miffed.

14. Darth Marsden
Maybe?

You need to place the DLL files into your root Half-Life folder (the one with hl.exe in it). That should let you play the mod.I’ve played this and though there are a lot of nice touches (sometimes dropping your weapon after being struck by a zombie, for instance), there’s too many problems introduced to really recommend this. Bullet points, take it away! The Good
– The new weapons are awesome, if pointless.
– Replacement models all look great, except for the female assassin, which suffers from a schoolboy error regarding shading. Oops!
– There’s a bunch of new features you can use in the advanced options menu. The Bad
– The new movement system doesn’t work as well as it should, and just feels awkward.
– Enemies don’t become solid as soon as they “beam in’, so you’ll see them, but have to wait for a second before you can shoot them, during which time they’ll likely shoot you first.
– Why would a Black Ops member have to use a bit of pipe and not have his own knife?
– Not all the new features included work very well. Shadows, for example, suffer from severe overlapping, and the option to see your body when you look down doesn’t work very well when crouching.

In short – if you’ve already played Black Operations, then there’s no point in trying this version. Although there’s new features, the core story’s exactly the same and not enough has changed to warrant another playthrough.

Kk I got the DLL’s, Played and finished the mod And it is without a doubt a very very good mod, and Very well modeled for a half-life 1 Mod, The Story was OK but it could have used some dialog, And the Gameplay was good and fun(depending on your Definition of fun) Im not really good at getting my point across to people so I might aswell just say PLAY IT NOW

17. Andyno

Hi there. Really good mod but… I’m stuck in the garage section where the bomb explodes and there’s nowhere to hide from it. Or did I miss something? Thanks in advance.

I’m having a problem at the end of the map. I can’t get out of the garage. Is there some place to go? It was a real good map and I’d like to see it to the end. I think you over did the ending.
Pls help. Really like to finish this map.

Basically, when the Gman reactivates the bomb and you wake up you have to immediately run back out the way you came in. Don’t stop for anything and you will make it.

Very, Very nice! At first though, I must say that getting used to the initial movements, made me dizzy and nauseous, but once I got used to it, sweet mod. Shoot, at one point, I forgot it was only HL1! Of course, I never played the orig., soooo, very impressed.

How can I fix it ??
Files not found!

Help me, please.

1. I have now added a working link in the main post.

23. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong, as the mod seems to start off perfectly fine, but after the first “briefing” from your boss in Black Ops, the next map won’t let me continue…..I simply can’t break the wooden slatted window with the pipe.

After having to resort to cheating, which I’d really rather not have to, I got as far as the Chinatown map, and had absolutely no idea how to proceed….all unbreakable glass, no ladders, no other way forward…..

As I’d enjoyed the experience (mostly) up til then I’m going back to the original Black Ops to give that a revisit. While I liked the updated version, if it is virtually unplayable I can’t really give it an kind of recommendation.

Any advice anyone? Or should I just stick with the original after all?

1. Where are you stuck exactly? Please describe precisely…

1. Gypsy_Jim

I’d just arrived in the China quarter. As I’m in the middle of a play through of the original which let me break the windows straight in front of where I’d landed I’m beginning to think that my use of sv_cheats on this version might have scuppered my progress.

Thanks for asking though. I might come back to this as I’d quite liked the visual side of it, at some point, but as my reader is being bombarded with your comments on all the other mods you’ve recently played through, I know I’ve got quite a lot of catching up to do first!

1. Whoa, what do you mean? Do you what you want, I’m just asking hehe
Yesterday, I played the Redux version the first time, but I already played the original often.
There are almost no bugs and there is always a way to proceed, except you jump off from 1000 feet 😉 Just kidding!

So, in the Chinatown map you have to…
move into the building, get upstairs, carefully outside off the window and move, always on the left around on the ledge over to the opposite side of the restaurant into the room with window open and lights on.
There’s always away, you never get stuck, except for mabye a lil clipping stucks 😉

24. Play It Now!

This was fun again, I already played the original game a few times and playing Redux now was even more fun! The mod content stays the same, that means the story and the whole maps aren’t changed.
What’s changed are quite essential things though.
The main point is the movement! When you start running it begins slow, but after a few seconds you really start running. When you get hit badly you’re like shaken and it needs some time to be able to move again. There’s even recoil when firing the shotgun!
The screen also slowly moves when walking or running, and you can see your lower body when looking down, or your knees when crouching.
Another thing is the graphics, they look even more beautiful as the textures have higher resolution if I’m right, and all models and weapons are customized.
One of the assault rifles can now carry more than 10 contact grenades!

The grade of realism is also higher, meaning when you’re “eating” some shells of a grunt from his shotgun, you take more damage and the screen is tilting, that also counts for explosions.
So watch your step, think twice before rushing in some unknown place.
And watch out of those nasty alien slaves, they can kill you within a few seconds!
I played Black Ops Redux on “medium” difficulty and it sometimes was unbelievably hard due to the enhancement of realism. So if you’re a newbie, I suggest playing on easy.
And if you’re a hardcore HL player, why not try “difficult” ? Difficult will surely mean hell on earth when playing the first time! Good luck!

Other changes are the medkits, you now don’t get health back when running over them, you need to pick them up and use them via the weapon selection slot #1 below the “crowbar”.
Picking up ammo and weapons is also different, you have to “use” them to pick them up.
You can carry a maximum amount of 5 healthkits at a time and use them whenever you want or need.
There are also new weapons like another assault rifle!
Fading in text messages always tell you when an item can be used via saying “interactive”.

Pros:
-Excellent graphics, textures and lighting — a joy for the eyes
-Very good mapping, layouts — sophisticated and it’s often needed to progess further
-Pretty cool and tough combat action, lot of weapons and ammo
-High grade of realism, in combat and when moving around
-Great story incl. briefing and “objectives”, also comic-like story-telling
-Some very nice puzzles, not obvious at first
-A few nice scripts
-Long playtime (around 2 hours)
-Nice atmosphere, supported by occasional music tracks
-Secret areas with goodies
-Tutorial map for learning how to play the main game
-Flashlight and nightvision!
-Allusions to other games, such as “Poke 646”, “Max Payne”, “Half-Life 2” etc.

Cons:
-Balancing — at some places it’s very hard, and there’s just too much ammo
-Bugs like triggering scripts, mapchange, game freeze, graphic bugs
-Some puzzles can be difficult, to figure out what to do
-Movement is very slow sometimes, for instance when crouching in tight places
-Often dark places, in the meaning many textures are making it look dark
-Many locked doors
-Some secrets can’t be accessed due to the change of movement limitations

Conclusion:
If you haven’t played the original “Black Ops” mod yet, you should play it and if you like it you could try “Black Ops Redux”, as it’s more difficult.
If you’ve played “Black Ops” already and expect major contentual changes in the matter of story or mapping then there’s no need to play Redux, except you want a harder challenge and feel the realism. To me both versions are worth playing, and I enjoy it.

my game crash after the train intro

anybody help me please

1. Zekiran

Are you using a manual install and following all the (rather complicated) instructions about where to put the files? Or using Gauge which does that for you? I’m downloading it now and going to try using it with Gauge, to see if I have a problem.

In the meantime though, you’ll probably want to find your system specs to see if your rig is doing something weird, or if there may be some software problems. Is your firewall blocking the game from playing? Have you installed any updates to your video card drivers or OS recently? Those things might impact even older games like this.

Will edit my post if I can, otherwise will come back with reply about whether Gauge runs this mod on my rig.

** edited: This mod will NOT run under Gauge, it has a dll issue that Gauge doesn’t or can’t address, and it won’t even start up.

I use Windows 10
NVIDIA GeforceGTX 770

I installed 15 other Half-Life Mods, and they all work with no problems

Greetings,
David

1. Zekiran

Gauge is the new name for Maptap, which is linked in BRIGHT BLUE in the ‘PLAY’ dropdown at the top of the site page. It is an installer which normally takes maps and full mods in their zipped format, and installs them so you don’t have to. It also can keep track of your favorite installs, and uninstall things too. Normally it also helps to play mods or maps which have custom menu issues (that reference the older location of files, broken by Steam updates to the engine). In this case, apparently, it doesn’t help because the DLLs are still missing or in the wrong location.

1. Thanks for the quick and helpful reply 🙂

That’s bad because I wanted to play this Mod on YouTube ^^
Hopefully we can find a solution soon 🙂

half life & counter strike 1.5 (sierra version)
you can download sierra version and copy the mod in half life sierra’s folder

have fun

1. Zekiran

The game was released long after Steam versions were available, and had obviously worked without the original version present. Something else is broken, or gauge needs to be able to adjust where dlls are for this mod to work. Sierra version isn’t easily available *legally*, so … not sure what you mean by just download it. It’s not for sale.

2. Well I have an Sierra Folder, but no .exe

34. Unfortunately, this mod crashes on the most recent Steam version of Half-Life, because it probably has compatibility issues with the included OpenGL renderer.

Since Direct3D was removed in 2013, there seems to be no other solution than playing in Software mode. It works there, but it defeats the purpose of a visually enhanced “Redux” version.

Solution: just play the original Black Ops. It’s basically the same thing minus pumped up visuals and it runs perfectly fine on the Steam version of Half-Life.

35. X22

I found a problem with this mod before getting to even start actually playing,
when you click ‘new game’ and then select ‘Training Room’ the game will show the options that you get when you pause by pressing ‘esc’ then crashes by closing out the game.

The same goes for selecting ‘Easy’, ‘Medium’ or ‘Hard’ difficulties, without the pause menu issue, and after getting passed the dialogue, the screen goes white and the game closes.

Has anybody else had this problem? And how can I fix it?

Alright, so when I get to the scene after the strain and the lightning strikes, it crashes. No error, just closes. Same goes for training room, you start training room up and it crashes. FIX IT!

crashes in the first cutscene, garbage.

38. For anyone coming here for a more HD or gameplay updated version of Black Ops, try out Half-Payne Black Ops. Yeah in 2017 Zikshadow brought the Max Payne stylings home, HD’d up everything, also added a new weapon, and it all works great! With it Black Ops is now the Half-Payne campaign mode it always wanted to be, and I highly recommend playing it! So you don’t worry about whether you should play Redux or Original or bet on bugs.

40. I followed the instructions, changed the dll files both in the hl.exe folder and the mod folder, the mod starts well, we pass the loading screen, get to the part of the intro, then a flash appears after the train departs and the game crashes.
