Black Death is a single-player Half-Life 2: Episode Two level that deviates from the original gameplay.
In the post-apocalyptic future, Gordon Freeman must escape from a zombie-infested medieval tourist town outside of City 17 with no allies and only two tools at his disposal – his trusty crowbar and a confusion crossbow.
The new crossbow confuses enemies into attacking the victims rather than killing them. Outmanned, he must adapt to his new environment and find the balance between crowbar and crossbow.

This was so close to a Personal Favourite but it’s just not big enough.
You see quality straight away and this level oozes it. The textures clearly are very important but as with all things in life it’s not what you got but what you do with it that counts.
The gameplay is explained via text on the screen, which is annoying but for a portfolio piece it’s acceptable. The new mechanic is very very cool, but I think I would have created a new skin for the grenade and used that instead. It would make more sense.
Anyway, it’s very fun to play and the author has an eye for detail, you only need to see his website to see how he presents things, to know that.
He has a Portal 2 level too, which I will be posting this week.
I did manage to get out of the map as you can see from image 18 but he probably hasn’t beta tested it enough.
All in all a brilliant level and highly recommended.
What a day is it today! CrossbowVille continues! We find ourselves in a very beautifully designed Tudor themed town.
But I wasn’t joking when I said about the continuation of CrossbowVille. This map is crossbow focused too, and the enemy soldiers also don’t drop weapons when they die. I think that it shouldn’t be that way, because the crossbow shoots with confusion gas which might make the enemy fight for us, so when the last enemy is left we have no choice but to use crowbar. I think that having more choices would be better.
When I loaded a saved game, the crossbow turned into regular crossbow. It still had a small chance to release the confusion gas, though.
It took me a while to find a way to open the last door.
Overall, it’s a great place worth visiting.
A small, romantic little hamlet with a slight zombie problem, but the combine is here to help.
First off I could not figure how to break the box without my trusty crossbow, until the answer hit me like a door in the face!
I saw a balcony full of zombies, which looked a bit daunting until I found the “mood-crossbow” and sat back to watch the show! A nice little addition to the HL weapons arsenal that’s makes even the combine a tad more comical.
Over far too quick, the sign of an interesting mod.
This map is so fantastic!! Using the CS:S Textures in a HL2 Map is always a personal love of mine. The very concept of the plague bolt was fantastic. Like Phillip, this was borderline personal favourite, but alas it was too short. I really can’t find anything bad to say about this map. A+ work.
Yeah, that was fun ! Loved the feel of the place, quality stuff. Now if it was just an hour longer..I thought it had a sort of Heretic 2 flavour in places, especially the exit mechanism, but that’s not a bad thing. Can we have some more please ?
Quite a fun little map, and it left me wanting more. I loved the idea of turning one enemy against the other. The only thing I wasn’t crazy about was the fact that, once you shoot an enemy with the confusion crossbow, all the other NPC’s instantly begin attacking it. I think it would have been great if the other NPC’s had thought it was still an ally until they themselves were attacked by it. Oh well, it still was very interesting and it would have been even more so with a greater selection of enemy types. I would love to see a Hunter attacking a group of combine soldiers!
What a surprise this one was, I don’t normally like zombie mods/maps but this for a less than obvious reason I enjoyed it!
As soon as I got outside it was to my eye, Ankh Morpork on Terry Pratchett’s Discworld, the confusion crossbow seemed in keeping with the silliness of the discworld. OK I don’t know if the author was influenced by Terry Pratchett but the look and feel made it better than most other zombie shooters for me.
If like me you are not a fan of zombie shooters but are a fan of Terry Pratchett this is well worth a look.
I know many people enjoy the new dynamic, and I am not the exception, but I say is a maybe, because i’m not sure how this new crosbow gas dynamic is going to be useful again in any other mod, the map was nice too it felt like a CSS style map, and I really would prefer to play CSS in that extended scenario.
Overall this has the feel of a very average guidhall map, it feels that u are playing a portofolio piece more than anything.
So play this, but don’t expect magic or anything like that.
I have to say, a nade (as PP suggested) would have been more realistic than a bolt when it comes to releasing fumes.. Tab key didn’t work for me – to see the current objective. PP getting out of the map and a crack in the ground I happened to notice (didn’t even look for map bugs) is outweighed by the cute custom textures and models (most of which are not his tho). Author should consider mapping for multiplayer imo.
Sitting and watching enemies kill each other has been used since the hl1 game itself so.. Maybe? It’s too short and more of an eye candy so the screenshots might suffice for some of us.
Loved this quick little map and the use of the crossbow mood gas. too bad it is so short
A short and polished single-player adventure. Hit zombies and combine alike with “confusion gas” to turn them against their comrades.

The crossbow was a nice change and a cool idea. Though I wouldn’t want that as a permanent in other maps but here it worked. I honestly cannot complain much about this map at all as it looks lovely and isn’t frustrating at all. Although I must admit the box at the start got me for a few mins lol. One flaw here with this map – darn I wanted it to be bigger! That’s all. Ace otherwise.

I really love the visual of this mod. The medieval-like town is so beautiful. And I also like the concept of plague bolt. Nice mod!

It says map is invalid. Although I feel like I’ve played this before. Maybe from another site.
