Be better if it was longer but was a fun map to play with lots of action.

hi, I downloaded this as an .exe file. the instructions in the html text file said
-game evil + map alamo0 etc. this did not produce anything. I loaded maps and graphs
into Valve and this did not produce anything (CONSOLE map alamo0 gave a can’t find nam/bsp error). there is no pak file in the EVIL folder. What is going on?

  11. gerry

whoops, that is nam.wad not nam/bsp

Heart of Evil: Alamo, as you might guess from its title, is a small add-on pack for Heart of Evil. It requires HoE to run, and is loaded through the console. Overall, Alamo is a short but fun add-on that allows you to stretch just a little bit more out of the Heart of Evil world.

Alamo is somewhat similar to Village of the Damned, which was a bonus map included with the original Heart of Evil. But in Alamo, you have a mission to fulfill: you have to find a key and four locked safes that were lost as part of a convoy. The opening map is just an introduction, where you have a selection of different load-outs rather like Bootleg Squadrog. The second map is where all the action takes place. This map is designed similarly to Village (and the bulk of the Heart of Evil maps, but on a smaller scale). It’s very non-linear and all the areas are interconnected, and you’ll do a fair bit of wandering before accomplishing your mission. This wandering of course includes a lot of combat with soldiers, the tough zombies, and aliens. You’ll come across a number of 3-way battles, and thankfully the Huey chopper that dropped you off circles the map the whole time shooting anything moving that isn’t you (unless you get in its way). Though the chopper didn’t seem to kill many of the stronger enemies for me, it certainly weakened a lot of them making finishing them off much easier.

Alamo’s similarity to Heart of Evil means it shares many of the same drawbacks. The character models, some of which are sub-par, are the original models from Heart of Evil. Also, Alamo’s architecture and texturing are pretty rough and unattractive in places, although the overall layout of the map is excellent and makes for enjoyable gameplay. But the lack of any sort of decent ending is kind of a downer – the map just fades to white and then dumps you at the Windows desktop.

Although your mission is pretty simple, the wandering you’ll have to do plus the ton of enemies in your way give this pack respectable playing time even though the action is confined to a single map. Add to those the weapon selection you get in the first map, and Alamo becomes a fun, replayable romp in the Heart of Evil world.

It seems the more safe you pick, the more enemies there’s, and for worst on Hard mode, aliens are stronger than humans, so there’re many of them. If you lose your time you can get in a situation without having ammo. this level also would require auto health regen to play without problems. It seems this guy has forget to include some health kits around the level. The chopper do not attack but if there’re enemies close to you you may receive a rocket from friendly chopper fire. That sucks a lot. Is he helping me or killing me?
