Affliction is certainly one of the best example of designed perfection. The storyline is quite simple (perhaps too simple): you are sent to a research base where you encounter some aliens and grunts combat, your only aim is to solve some easy puzzles in order to escape from the plant.
This piece of work is somehow upgraded by 3 new weapons (well designed!), this is normally seen only in huge realisation, and it gives a special touch to this small map pack (only 7Mb download).
Is there any thing wrong to tell? Perhaps, if you’re looking for very challenging combats, lots of cut scenes, special ambience, then you’re gonna be disappointed. This is only depending on what you like, for me, personally, I rather prefer a well designed set pieces that lacks on challenges and durability in time (only 2 hours to complete) than a stand alone map where there is some kind of killing feast without designed area.
Conclusion:
This is a mini mod you shouldn’t miss, absolutely worth the download.

Gameplay:
Easy at first but the difficulty raises slightly the further you get but nothing too hard and straight forward, with some switches here and there. Very few walks through vents which is good as it keeps the travelling in the main areas so it didn’t get boring with some light action here and there. Plenty of health and ammo around with a large amount left after completing the mission.
Design:
Simple yet detailed typical Black Mesa design with a solid structure throughout. Nothing to complain about in this department since everything looks fine without any problems. Texturing is also good, aligned well and mixes perfectly with other choices but again in a typical Black Mesa style.
Conclusion:
Quite easy yet balanced gameplay with a solid yet typical Black Mesa design.

This one is very nice; I believe it uses the weapons featured in Gearbox’s HiDef Pack (although I could be wrong). The level design is excellent and the battles are well-balanced… and, just when I thought it would end, it dished out some more. This one has earned a place on my hard drive; I’ve played it dozens of times, and still play it from time to time. Well worth the download, and good for an hour or two of great gameplay.

I only played this for the posts (which got my hopes up), even though I was warned it has no story and frankly it was a bit of a disappointment.

Nice intro with the truck crashing into the ground. The enemies in the beginning are quite avoidable.
Small speech changes and scientist skins, new weapons (the Pistol looks and sounds new, but feels the same and the Submachine gun only sounds different; the crooked crowbar was funny).
The maps look great, some parts of the facility not affected, other parts torn up – realistic. Plus it keeps you rushing with all the explosions around you. But it becomes too repetitive at some point.
A small puzzle (the first one, is it?) was quite, well, puzzling, because you’re supposed to use something that’s not usually usable 😐 But I got to see a scientist jump through a window! You don’t see that every day!
Map af_5 has some round corners which can get the player confused, since they’re so many and they all look the same. Also noticed some bugs: I got stuck in a scientist (never thought I’d say that) which kept appearing 2 feet above the ground;harmless electricity beams, or were they meant to be that way? :P; stuck in map 6 for a while because the next map didn’t load the first time I went through a corridor; the same corridor, I think, proved to be too small: when I was in the middle of a fight and took some steps back, the previous map loaded. Bad design, maybe?
I didn’t enjoy the ending, too abrupt and not even accurate, I didn’t enter the elevator backwards..
Average gameplay, as it was said before, mostly running and gunning. The author is not a modder, but
obviously a good, if not great mapper. But an inconsistent one.

Good black mesa levels, entertaining, no bugs, not so hard puzzles . It looks like the middle in original half-life.

As I said in the mod description, this starts with a black sequence that seems to suggest you were in some medical distress. I got a little worried about the two assassins waiting for me, but I needn’t have been. Let’s just say things work out for the best.
This mod doesn’t have a story, but really, what story do you need when all you want to do is run around Black Mesa shooting shit? In this case none.
For me the lack of story or at least obvious objective within a context, was replaced by the little details within the maps. Scientists running around and even jumping through windows!
Yes, some of the hallways or corridors are a little plain and bland but it doesn’t feel out of place. I honestly feel a real BM would have lots of these types of corridors.
Anyway, I suppose the biggest let down is the actual combat. It’s almost perfectly spaced out, in both terms of time and geography. I was never attack by more than 3 enemies and they were often in twos.
To my knowledge this was the author’s first and last foray into SP, but he seemed to have made plenty of MP maps.
As a side note, I have emailed him in the hope of a short interview – fingers crossed.
Putting all the above together, I still had a lot of fun and believe that you will too.
Heh, this is one my favourites. It’s been a long time since my last playthrough. It doesn’t look very good, but believe me, it’s very fun to play. I also like the custom machine gun model.
Lots of fun to have here with some fairly good level design but unfortunately the combat isn’t that all too involving and it suffer a lot from being way too easy even on normal difficulty. The author also seems to borrow a lot from the original Half-Life design and even Uplink, not necessarily a bad thing but some original creativity is preferred.
The map pack also comes together with some custom content, these include altered player weapon models with new sounds. There has also been some minor changes on the scientist models and security guards. These are cosmetic changes though and doesn’t alter the gameplay at all.
Overall, an easily recommended map pack with some solid design and excitement to have but suffers from being too easy so as such a playthrough on hard is preferred. The ending is a bit disappointing but it doesn’t affect the game at all.
This is another fun one, although it is incredibly easy.
This was a really fun mod although it is more or less an all out action map and requires little thinking at all. You just run around with your reskinned weapons blowing grunts and aliens up, and if you like that kind of stuff then you’ll love this. This mod also has different weapon, scientist and Barney textures and models too. The weapon models were really good, except for maybe the crowbar which was just difficult to look at for me, especially the peashooter and AR. All 6 weapons were reskinned, and while some were only slightly transformed such as the grenades and shotgun, some of them looked completely different such as the crowbar and AR. The scientist and barney faces were also different from the original but only slightly. Still it’s nice to see a change in personnel around Black Mesa.
The downside to this mod was the difficulty. It was not hard at all and once I first got 100 HEV I don’t ever remember it going below 70. This is probably the easiest good length mod to date and although it did get harder towards the end it was still easy. Speaking of the length of the mod, I thought it was perfect. It wasn’t too short and unfinished like Parallax and it wasn’t too long and boring like Back to Xen 2.
This really is a must play for the people who just like blasting pieces out of things.
A fun black-mesa themed mappack. There are some custom models for the weapons but you’ll find they aren’t too different and preserve the general “black mesa” theme. The maps are nice enough and also have touches of design that easily reminds me of official maps, especially uplink. There’s also some backtracking that recalls to mind the predisaster-then-disaster scenario, and it’s all very good. Overall, in terms of mapping, Affliction is really good and continues the Black Mesa theme pretty well.
Very good HL1 mod! I liked the redesigned weapons and the overall design was of high quality.
At Last! A mod I really enjoyed. Time-wise this was lunch break in length and could have been a deleted part of the original Half-Life. The look, feel and game-play were for me almost spot on in the style I like to play and that is to play without tearing my hair out. The mix of enemies stops it from becoming a gruntfest and the layout looks familiar. If you are a Modder/Mapper I can understand the design and layout issues you might have, but for me as a humble player this just felt right.
Having played this a long time ago some of the puzzles were a little too easy the second time around (or has my game-play style changed over the years) but that didn’t detract from the enjoyment factor. Affliction flowed well from times of almost inaction to combat, with the combat being just enough to not have to worry about enemies spawning in already cleared areas. As for the new skins, I hardly noticed them as I was wrapped up in playing the game.
The ending after destroying the tank is a little wishy-washy and totalling the tank is quite amusing, once you’ve used up all you explosives and charges you will think ” DOH!” when you find the answer.
Almost a PF!!
It was a relief to play through a mod that had some structure, also one that was complete and without glitches. Of late many of the 100 have been a tedious exercise of endurances leading to mental suffering. Afflication gives us a care free ride has we stroll through what is not a challenging encounter.
There’s no great achievement in mapping of gameplay, the set designs are right and adequate for the location without ever catching the eye, or being memorable in any way.
We do get plenty of room to maneuver with passageways and rooms on the wholesome side, although I don’t think best use was made of the space, with opportunities missed to stage some punishing encounters and ambush situations.
On the whole the combat was thin and weak being spread out and containing too many zombie sequences and too little Grunt encounters.
One of those mods that you can just switch the day off and breeze through.
I quite enjoyed this romp through some Black Mesa style areas. It’s possibly the best re-creation of BMRF I’ve seen outside of the official Half-Life expansions.
The opening setup was clever, and there are a number of nice sequences throughout the pack, including some nifty dialogue scenes. The combat does get slightly tougher as you progress, although you’re never really challenged except perhaps in the finale.
The mapping and layout here are also highlights. There are just enough side areas and exploration opportunities, without frustrating the player. The mapping itself is technically solid, and as I said above it just feels like Black Mesa. The author nailed these for sure.
The only drawbacks were that it was entirely too easy (play on difficult!) and the total lack of a story. I suppose it felt like simply Black Mesa all over again. Nothing wrong with that, but a story piecing things together and wrapping up at the end would have been icing on this cake.
As it is, it’s an enjoyable though quite by-the-book set of maps that is probably worth your time but doesn’t really go the extra mile.
This mod begins with a nice scripted scene where the suit heals us. After that we find ourselves in Black Mesa and go through the freight tunnels, offices, labs and waste disposal systems. The design is good. The locations are various. The most interesting part are the mazelike research labs, they are the most memorable part of the whole mod. At times the author uses the architecture similar to original Half-Life, which makes it a believable replication of Black Mesa. But some waste disposal rooms are almost identical to the training course rooms. I think that’s too much.
The models of scientists and weapons are changed, which is good. This mod also demonstrates good use of Half-Life dialogue files. The boss fight at the end was fun.
Early in the labs, there’s a pit where it’s possible to fall, but not possible to get out. The author should have either added some way to get out or make stucking in the pit impossible.

A pretty mod, and really entretaining due to the combat parts which are fitted perfectly here, overall the scandinavian mods as this one, are good, I like that alussion to the uplink demo part, where u get there and found barney with the scientist right outside the lambda coolant sistem.
Oh I also have to mention that I appreciate the weapons new sounds., mp5 sounded lovley and I like to use it the most, and also the mighty shootgun sound, and the crooked crowbar model just rock, so lovley, for a new weaponery in mods fan like me!

The “show” starts nice and it’s sort of exciting but hmmm….
THERE’s ALWAYS SOMETHING MISSING!!!
I’m about design, firefights, puzzles, challenges etc.
At some places the leveloutfit is just great, and someplace else it’s totally weak for example.
Then the difficulty is at all times too easy, as there are quite much recharge stations for both, health and HEV, even a lot of HEV batteries + healthkits too.
Nice thing are the scripts, which are used when you revisit an area, for example after activating something somewhere else first.
In conclusion it’s a very good mod, but sadly no masterpiece as there is potential for it…
Pro’s:
-Mostly good level interior, but also some ugly and poor
-It’s obvious what to do, and there are also some puzzles which is good
-Plenty of ammo, weapons, recharging possibilities
-Decent combat
-Good scripts
-Well-known areas such as from Uplink level and from elsewhere if I’m right (?)
-Black Mesa-feeling
Con’s:
-Too easy: mostly zombies, less grunts – and, already too much ammo / health
-Balancing: firefights, level diversion, ammo + health placement
-Sometimes boring leveldesign, no outdoor areas, no water, no air 😉
Affliction is the latest release (and the only singleplayer one at that) from Tony Hiltunen, author of several maps for Half-Life. And the mapping experience shows because the map pack isn’t just technically clean, it’s polished to near (technical) perfection.
No doubt about it, level design is excellent. There’s a keen attention to detail and it shows most of the time, but in a few rare instances it becomes inconsistent. Not that it matters much because you’ll be too busy fighting aliens and Marines to notice. Combat takes place in a variety of well-made areas that are almost set-pieces but really aren’t because they aren’t quite as impressive as they could have been. Instead there’s a very calculated approach in balancing the visual scale, with no overblown architecture to provide a stunning moment. At least everything is neatly constructed and free of visual anomalies…in fact, it’s obvious that a lot of time and effort went into the design of these maps. From the texturing to architectural variation and everything in between…it all simply radiates with polish.
That unfortunately is where the positive outlook ends, because the actual gameplay itself is hardly coordinated. First of all, the complete lack of story, and this from a mapper who really should know better than that (no offense to the author intended). No background whatsoever makes for a definitely boring experience. Then there’s the combat, which is good enough, but hardly fulfilling, leading to scanty gameplay that really adds up to nothing we haven’t already seen. Finally, the complete lack of cohesion to make the unit as a whole stick together – no exposition, and an ending guaranteed to make anyone’s head spin in confusion.
While a technical masterpiece, Affliction only barely manages to crank out pleasing gameplay. It sticks to a one-track formula all the way through, the same formula that was used years ago and is now getting old. Compound this with the fact that this is by an author who has a variety of HL maps under his belt and it’s almost mind-boggling. For those who don’t mind the tired gameplay of years past then by all means have at it, but everyone else should probably skip this one.

I played this before a long time ago and I still do. It’s an amazing mod.
The combat is great, the replacements are nice and the fights were never impossible.

I had a blast with Affliction, it captivated me like I was playing a level of Doom or Quake, although depending on your view this is also the main problem with the mod: It doesn’t feel like Half-Life
The mapping in this is simultaneously very good and very bland; a lot of detail was put into areas of the mod’s maps (one stand out for me was a metal grate on a ceiling of a hallway with 3 spinning fans behind it) however this wasn’t consistent throughout the mod, there are many rooms that have a great attention to detail but there’s just as many with boring and basic design, particularly hallways. I can only assume the mapper for this was a novice, but if so it’s one of the best novice attempts I’ve seen. There are a few areas that look suspiciously similar to places Valve already made, such as the opening to HL Uplink and various places at the start of Half-Life.
The progression of the mod seemed unusual to me, as I said before I got more Doom vibes from this map than I did Half-Life in terms of how the gameplay flows, most of the time it feels like a more ordinary shooter, I think this is because of the tight repetitive rooms as well as the enemy placement. The enemies are scattered haphazardly, there’s one point where you meet grunts, then immediately afterwards there’s Xen aliens, then scientists, then zombies, realistically all of these should have already fought each other by the time you reached the grunts. There’s a point in the mod where you loop around and repeat maps you’ve already done that are slightly different, this is fine by itself but it doesn’t feel like you achieved anything when it happens, so I didn’t understand the point of that.
Affliction has new weapon models and sounds. I’m not a fan of the crowbar, however the pistol, shotgun, and AR all felt very good to use, the pistol in particular was a favourite for me. The combat is fun but way too easy, play this one on hard if you want any real challenge
Affliction doesn’t play to Half-Life’s strengths but it is very fun.

There were some minor bugs like some level transition that failed to trigger, but overall it was fun.
This level is nice to enjoy your time playing a balanced mod on any difficulty. You do not have to skip even enemies. all of them can be eliminated from the map, there’re all types of them, great variation. You can take advantage by using AR in HECU combats, just throw some. The final tank made me think a lot. I personally think, it’s true, we can eliminate the tank managers with the lightning, but the lightning is not easy to produce in the open. Maybe if we can link a big cable and fix it to the tank and send of the lightning, maybe it will blow many things inside, since everything is made of iron. But I think that if there’s not enough power of lightning, nothing will happen because the size is bold.
