This release combines two Map Labs Test Tubes (short challenges). Unfortunately, one of them only received one entry so it was combined with the larger Test Tube.
A Place in the West, as the title suggests, simply asked authors to build a map based on the popular comic Half-Life: A Place in the West, which depicts life in America under the Combine.
The Wrap-Up Two! – much in the vein of The Wrap-Up! – allowed mappers to choose any previous Map Labs theme and enter. Finish an abandoned project, remaster a previous map, or make a brand new map; all were acceptable as long as the map fit one of the Map Labs themes. Nine maps were submitted.
Enjoy this double feature!
As always, if you’re interested in learning more about Map Labs and maybe even participate in their upcoming challenges, visit the Map Labs Discord.

From a game player’s perspective only, IMO there is only one to try out of the 9. That one is #8, A Bridge Too Far, very enjoyable. #9 might be OK too, but it was too difficult to figure out for me.
I can understand people around the discord summons for these kinds of mapping competitions are excited every time they release something, at least, they have the big and undeniable merit of keeping Half-Life 2 maps alive in this very 2024! Yeah, I can understand all of this.
Nevertheless from a gamer’s perspective, these competitions vary a lot in terms of worth playing, and the quality of many entries. And here, beyond the big “Maybe?” recommendation I guess we have a very bland competition in terms of gameplay and overall enjoyment.
The “Place in The West” entry was pretty amazing! I’d love to play a full-scale mod like that that showed up in that entry! the whole piece felt interesting in gameplay terms, slow-paced but immersive as hell, and set up in a beautiful western abandoned supermarket environment. It was lovely and felt like a very professional proof of concept. It is kind of a shame developers just won’t invest their bunch of time to build a total conversion game like that, hoping they will one day but I honestly doubt about it.
The rest of the maps of this “Wrap Up 2” concept were overall just OK but to that memorable to be honest. Especially now that I just played the amazing “Remorse: The List” horror game, from the author of The “Grey” mod, I loved the concept of “The Source Zone” entry, but I hate its very st*pid “Cromulent” environment instead of doing a great horror entry.
The Summoner also was impressive, as reminded me that I used to dream about these huge scary abandoned cathedral landmarks in the middle of nowhere, where I explored them and I just got lost there full of fear, so yeah that entry was like if someone would pour the content of those weird dreams of mine and make a game with it, I liked this map because of this.
The only entry I hated was that block-out one, about the source engine… Man please just don’t release things like that are the total opposite of a cool gaming experience.
So yeah I guess this is all I can say about this mapping competition. A big redundant “Maybe?” IMHO.

I think that this package was a good surprise for me, it was well equilibred in term of enjoyment and good suprise or at least no bad suprise
Playtime: 27 minutes
The design, the atmosphere, the tension is really great in this map. It was clearly a suvrival map quite short but intense, the fact that weapon is limited and not easy to handle between the crowbar and the gun was intended by anoying and also frustrating for myself sothat I didn’t gave it a wow rating
Playtime: 4 minutes
This was a walk around the coast, design was good like the feeling since there is no combat the progression is fast till the exit
Playtime: 2 minutes
Short one the good think is that it makes me laught regarding gameplay is was a little confusing and with not a lot of interest
Playtime: 20 minutes
The design was ok the atmosphere was really great and the originality was well present and for me the highlight of the map, the end rush was thrilling but also frustrating so that I didn’t give it a great rating
Playtime: 4 minutes
Even if this experience was really short it was perfectly immersing the player I really liked it
Playtime: 5 minutes
didn’t succeed at getting into ths one, it’s typically a developper map that certainly could be enjoyable with mapper and modder that understand correctly all the interconnection
of triggering but this wasn’t my case so I left after 5min I don’t rate it because I didn’t finish it
Playtime: 10 minutes
Classic and good design, good gameplay without any suprise, it was a fun experience but certainly too short
Playtime: 35 minutes
With a general good design and atmosphere the author was able to catch my attention and make my gaming enjoyable during the all map. Even if nothing was tremendous I foud it simply
great through it’s atmosphere
Playtime: 13 minutes
A classis combine fighting maps design was ok and gameplay enjoyable apart from that there was nothing really special
Playtime: 31 minutes
Impressive design, enjoyable gameplay but it wasn’t easy to find directly what to do… finally the map was really fun to play with a good and suprising storyline
It was a quite intresting entry for me, the positive aspect is that there wasn’t any bad entries and so maps really added something new and fresh in term of experience and scripting
I find it well worth the download

try to use the template twice but it didn’t work 🙁 , will redo it tomorrow in a manual way
Yeah sorry your comments went immediately to the Trash folder (not even Spam or Pending). The only way I know this has happened is if the author lets me know. So I restored your full comment using the template, sorry for the problem.
thanks for you help, and it’s not your fault it’s the system, so no need to be sorry about it 🙂
