The NewBlackMesaVille theme was pretty simple: Create a map with the feel of Black Mesa but try to make it seem new with new textures or just interesting layout.
This map was the only entry into the NewBlackMesaVille mapping competition. A few others promised to send entries, but circumstance got in the way. They all promised to release their work at some point in the future.
I have included more screenshots than I would normally for a map this size, because I took a good look around and wanted to record all the interesting points.
Be warned, there is no “actual” combat.

This is a great entry and I would have loved some real combat. I felt Ian did a good job of making the place feel like some sort of secret base and still feel similar to Black Mesa.
Definitely want to play more of this and hope that eventually a combat-based sequel is released.
First I have to say well done to Ian, he at least took up the challenge! Shame on those that indicated they would enter when the comp was announced.
His maps were, despite the lack of combat good looking albeit with a few doors I’d bump my head on. Add some combat and this short entry could have been fun.
Sadly, I think Phillip your lack of a page at least about the competition with a link to it may have contributed to the lack of entries, even a link to the original announcement of the comp would have kept the event alive. I suspect those who indicated they would enter may of got the impression the comp was no longer on and newcomers were just not aware of it.
That’s not meant to be a criticism, just an opinion.
It could have been worse, Robert Yang could have entered an art mod based on Black Mesa (shudder).
don’t give up on the comps, but keep the next one in peoples mind’s until the deadline.
Great pair of maps here I liked the way of communicating to the player and knowing there will be a sven coop extension makes me slightly hyped if you wane play a great prequel of some great mayhem to come give this a play trough for sure.
The setting was definitely pretty Black mesa as-well won’t be spoiling to much just give it a go
WOW! Is that really the good old HL1 we’re playing here??
Much of respect to the author as it’s such a beautiful BM-style complex.
These maps look just impressive with superior textures, lighting and architecture which really create the famous BM flair!
It’s pretty much detailed, but a bit too clean, if you know what I mean..
Anyway, just as Phillip and Bolx wrote, I cannot wait to replay it with some combat and or / puzzles.
Please keep us up to date Ian / Phillip! Thanks a lot in advance!
Thanks to the excellent “Cry of Fear” and the good grace of Valve letting me download “Half Life” just using my CD code from my “Half-Life generation” boxset; I gave this a go.
Oh, as said, no combat but I was viciously killed a lot at the end!
Loved the scenery and the Xen base idea, it really felt like an extension of HL and Black Mesa,
Cannot recommend this as a game, ” cause it aint! But I would say explore it now if the option was there.
Simply said: Prety nice, but only one entry? A bit disappointing but still a nice nostalgical Black Mesa experience.
Nice 2 maps with a great atmosphere in it.. For a contest map it’s well made.
It’s sad that there aren’t happening many things. You know some announcement sounds here and there would have probably increased the feeling for wandering around a Research facility.
Some more npc actions wouldn’t have hurt neither.
Never the less it has decent mapping it’s a map exclusively created for a contest and later on for sven coop therefore it’s very nice.
Thanks to Phillip for hosting that contest and thanks to the author for those 2 maps.
Play it later in your coffee break people.
I out a PN, because worth it, this 2 maps are beautifuly done and the look is so great, so professional, and I got the feeling this should be continued as a whole HL1 mod release in some near future, with combat stuff and if it continues this good could be a pretty good and cool HL1 old school release!!
I just loved when the gargantua kick the stone and broke the glass, I got killed there, and was soo funny becasue the guy who told me to folloow him actually was killed along with me because of that mischivieous kick of the gargie, haha so funny little detail, actually that’s my sentimental reason for reviewing this as a PN.
Is a shame really that this comp, was taken so poorly in conssideration by the mappers, come on!!, not all in life is SOurce engine!! please I hope their stuff taht was going to be deliver in this competition attempt will be released soon.
I was going to be in this but my old computer crapped out on me. What I got from this was kind of disappointing. I mean the mapping was pretty good but there just wasn’t much substance to it. The texturing was nice but right when it gets started it ends. It’s really sad to see that only one person actually made a map in time for the GoldSrc competition.
Well it’s disappointing that there was only one entry, but I do think it did capture Black Mesa very well. The layout is well done and the sequences are also solid and show quite some skill with the Half-Life map entities. As mentioned above, a little bit more atmosphere would have been perfect.
I would have liked to see some actual combat. In particular, I thought the large elevator would have been a great set piece to include some vertical combat.
For my part, I am aiming to finish and release my “entry” probably this summer. Unforeseen circumstances made it impossible to spend the time I needed on the map.
