  1. Phillip says Maybe

    There’s lots to like about this mod but also some thing is didn’t like. The first areas were too dark for my liking, and that didn’t put me in a good mood. The second was the number of gas cannisters that were lying “strategically”. Generally, that’s just too obvious.

    The Nova Prospekt areas were done quite well, although sometimes they seemed too high.

    Even though “my” Beta Testers Collective we still seemed to have missed things. I managed to get stuck behind a fence once and also got onto a roof that I don’t think I should have, although it didn’t really help me.

    I am pretty certain that I managed to cheat the final battle (waiting on a reply from Bertram) by jumping out before the action started.

    All in all it was generally fun but slightly too repetitive. I am very curious to see how other PP readers feel about this one.

    1. Thanks for the review Phillip.

      Now that you mention it maybe I did put too many obvious explosives. I guess when I play a lot of mods I l always think to myself “Man it’d be nice to have explosives to throw at these 50 something combine shooting at me!” I might have gone slightly overboard though.

      A note on repetitiveness: Actually this is something I thought about as I played it as well. However I was too far gone in the design process to go back and overhaul the gameplay.

    It was pretty good overall. I liked the Nova Prospekt areas and the voices on the Combine announcement systems. However, I couldn’t get the door open in the big outdoor courtyard where you have to get over a fence. Not sure why it wouldn’t open, maybe I didn’t do something correctly, but eventually I had to noclip through it to finish. That same area is a little unpolished; you can climb up on a roof and see the edge of the map. You can also smash out a window near that same section and it looks out into the edge of the map as well. Aside from that it was pretty good quality

    1. Thanks for the review and feedback!

      I had no idea about the roof issue. I added that relatively late.

      About that outdoor area. You’re supposed to take out a scanner which triggers some soldiers to open a door and attack you. From there you enter a security building and proceed to take the walkway. I guess this place could have been better planned and designed. It was originally totally different and built around taking out machine gunners in bunkers.

      I guess another round of beta testing should have been in order. Ah well.

  3. Maybe?

    We have to free Alyx from prison. We start in some basements. Two cameras scared me, because they sound like turrets. The zombies attack us, but we have the gravity gun, barrels, saws, so we can remember fun Ravenholm night.

    The plug didn’t face the socket when the game started to treat the plug as inserted. Good that I was still able to insert the second plug and continue.

    The design doesn’t look professional: the place doesn’t feel realistic, some rooms look bland. However, our progression is quite interesting.

    There’s an interesting place where the Combines see us and retreat to the balcony. Now it’s very convenient to take their grenades with Gravity Gun and throw back.

    Here, the design is better, because the author starts to imitate Valve’s Nova Prospekt style. But still, it looks simpler than the original NP. The voice that I heard made me feel that the Combines invaded Aperture Science and took the GlaDOS for themselves.

    It might be possible to skip the fight in the yard if you jump on the fence from the entrance and continue from there. It also might be possible to skip the fight in the bathroom by jumping to its other side from the “2nd floor” in the corridor, but I didn’t check that. I did the jumps, but then returned and completed it as the author intended.

    In my opinion, this is average mod. As I usually say in such cases, the mod is not bad, but there are better mods, so it’s up to you to decide whether you should play this or not.

    The screen faded out, the credits are shown, but we can still move and shoot. And it doesn’t return us to the main menu.

    It would be nice to see a next, high quality and professional mod, where we will escape from the prison with Alyx.

    1. Thanks for the lengthy in depth review!

      I’ll admit there is a wide departure in style from the first map to the second and third

      The first area was sort of designing from the hip. I didn’t rely much on Valve’s style and reference images and just went with designs that “felt” right. I guess that accounts for the unprofessional style.

      Originally this was going to be a six map mod with the next 3 maps breaking out of the prison. I ended up moving on to different projects though so I might postpone that to sometime in the future

    Can I ask why you went with the Nova Prospekt style of map? It seems so popular, every other HL2 map seems to be in a prison setting…

    1. Interesting question.
      I’ve noticed the same thing
      Since I’m something of a novice level designer I thought a prison would be relatively easy to design in the editor as opposed to complex outdoor areas or urban environments.

      I’ve had it in my mind to do a “prison” breakout theme for a while.

      With this, Kallaim, and Sile I can see why it might make people wonder.

  5. Play It Now!

    Well personally, I rather enjoyed it. I love throwing exploding barrels and stuff. I’m not very picky on textures and designs and stuff so maybe that is why I liked it more than others seemed to.
    One thing I did run into though was the lift (in screen shots 5&6). If you are not standing on the lift when you hit the button, which I wasn’t, then there is no way to get it to come back down so you have to reload a save or use noclip.
    I liked the enemy placements and the battles weren’t too overboard. There was a ton of ammo and health (on normal) but thats ok with me.
    I hope the author makes more mods, I had a lot of fun!

    I really don’t know why “prisons” have recently became a really usual, almost “cliche” central topic in HL2 modding production, I mean at least this and Sile mods, are located in sort of CMB ruled prisons, altough prisons are not in the places I hate to play a HL2 mod, I definitely would like to see more variety and creative places rather than just allways same old grey prisons!

    Despite of that courious detail, I liked this mod, have cool combat and maybe fight against a gunship or heli would had come perfect for the classic prison central open area or yard, I found the combats right in place, and the goal was ok, I mean I got to Alyx, but then what??, that’s over??, yes it’s over, But I mean that in those kinds of concepts like: go to find “X” character, you need a way back or a way to get the heck outta there, I kknow this can be done in a 2nd part but I preffer all that together: go to find “X” and then get out or escape, the whole thing in just one mod is perfect for one simple mod and not 2nd parts!

    So this is not the worst mod u would ever find by now, and conssidering there’re not big production coming up You can definitely have a quick perfect time, good play with this so play it and don’t regret.

  7. Play It Now!

    Great atmosphere and very entertaining, although a bit easy!
    Keep up the good work!

  9. Play It Now!

    I enjoyed this, I had no glitches or bugs but I did find it a little too easy with an over abundance of health and ammo and Im not very good at weapon or ammo conservation. I don’t like abrupt endings I would definitely have enjoyed being able to actually rescue Alyx and retreat but unlike some other maps at least it had an end. Overall it was fun play, thank you bschou

  10. A very nice mod and definitely a PIN, if you like pure combat mods.

    However, it was broken by Valve’s updates, so in order to play it, you have to do the following two things:

    1) Modify the gameinfo.txt as follows:

    “GameInfo”
    {
    name “Lambda Incursion”
    game “Lambda Incursion”
    title “Lambda Incursion”
    title2 “”
    type singleplayer_only

    homepage “”
    developer “”

    FileSystem
    {

    ToolsAppId 211
    AdditionalContentId 220

    SearchPaths

    }
    }
    }

    2) In the folder “maps”, rename or delete the file background01.bsp.

    1. No longer works, ideas?

  11. Personal Favourite

    Love it! Great game all around!

    Personally I like playing Easy for one reason, Patience. I can play med. or hard just as good as most anyone. But with easy I can explore more and also keep my temper down which means at the end I,ll enjoy a lot more of the game.

    Game play was great with lots and lots of ammo everywhere and love it that way as I don’t have to switch weapons as often. The game ran very smoothly throughout the entire length. Nice surprises with the various combats. It did get slightly longish at moments but was far from boring. Somehow I got a little disoriented and had to noclip once to get back on track, probably my fault though. Two things would have made a nice touch and thats maybe a few hunters in the open yard areas and at the end after all that fighting a decent rescue hug from Alyx would have topped it off as it was ending. Great game and I thank you for it!

  12. Play It Now!

    Looks good. Maps are intricate but a little plane. Game play is great. The final scene is better than same type of scene in HL2.
