Another slow day at work… been slow all week now… so you decided to go home early. But as soon as you start to leave, the Combine start to break in. Entering the bosses office, you arm yourself with a pistol, and try to kill every combine you can, but they were coming in overwhelming numbers. You chose to get the hell out of there ASAP, only to be injured during the process and to find yourself hiding in a sewer. You wake up, wondering what just happened. As you get up from a blood stained mattress, you find more of your friends already dead. Grabbing a crowbar, you work your way through the sewer to find help. In The Sewer, you play the role of Malcolm, a rebel fighting for his life to get to safety.

I took longer to play this mod than any other mod I have finished. Not because it’s a very long mod, but more because I kept getting distracted and of course Portal 2 being released didn’t help!
I actually think the gaps have changed the way I feel about it, although I am not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
I would call this a Yo-Yo mod because in some parts it’s very good and then in other parts it’s almost terrible. I don’t know if that’s because the author made some parts before others or not, but whatever the reason it does seem like it has been made either by two wildly differently skilled modders, which we know not to be true or because he got better as he went along.
Like 99.99% of Source action mods, there’s very little story. Sure, there’s a starting premise but that’s not the same as a story. No problems, because things keep changing within the levels and you keep playing.
My problem was that some times the actions required to open doors was never obvious and if it was then it was too often a big silver key, which is just outdated. There is a very detailed walkthrough, written by the author include in the file, so feel free to use it.
Too many areas are just bland, whilst other areas are detailed.
I’ve been thinking about why this mod hasn’t gotten more coverage and I think it covers down to three things:
1. The name. It’s not very exciting and who wants to spend hours in a sewer?
2. The changes in quality already mentioned. It seems to me that a mod is judged on it’s lowest part and in this case it’s not very good.
3. There’s not one beautiful, amazing WOW! section. The more I play mods, the more I think they need that.
(I’ll be turning the above two points into a proper post later this week.)
Back to this mod.
It’s clear that a lot of work has been put into it and the author deserves credit for a generally fun mod but more polish and beta testing would have been good (I managed to get out of the map at least once).
I definitely recommend it and the secret area is fun to play. Just be prepared for an “up/down” experience.
Not bad so far but I’m stuck in the area after u use the barrel with the wire to blow up the mesh door. Did find a keypad lookin thing. Not sure if it is for anything.
Thanks in advance for a hint!
Do you mean at the end of map 2?
If so, it seems to be bugged.
I also put the c4 near the closed fence and pushed the button in the medical room to destroy the fence. However, you did not need the c4 to destroy the fence, a press on the button was enough. You did need the c4 to destroy some bricks at a door on the ceiling. There you will find the key to unlock the “keypad’-door of the green room. Anyway, if you used the c4 at the fence, you’re stuck now. Clearly a signal of lack of betatesting
I had to skip level 1 and 2 because I couldn’t find any way to finish those levels. After skipping levels 3 and 4 I stopped playing in lack of interest.
Overall the mod feels fine, but something is missing. As Philip said, the quality varies much.
Quality over quantity, expect that this maps seems to go the other way around.
As whole its not horrible, but I don’t really like it, as the levels are bit too hard to complete, its not enjoyable for me.
Also, there is way too many headcraps, those are so damn annoying and this map has LOTS of them at the first levels.
And as last note, there is way too many locked doors.
It would also be better that the flares would be on the other side of the fence, as I used all of them before the dark part started 😛
I just didn’t have fun, it really had some great places, but overall it wasn’t good enough for me to finish.
I am not giving recommendation points as I have not completed it, but if I would give something I would give it “maybe?”
Would you skip parts of hl2 because you couldnt find a way to the next area/level? Im guessing this mod is different though because of bugs not difficult puzzles?
Hmm, i’ve just started this mod, but I am already stuck.
After the first zombie/soldier battle, I see two older soldiers and a zombie through a fence (killed them all). I cant see any way to continue now. The fence is closed. The ladder in the room before is broken and I am not able to smash the plank at the very beginning.
I dont know if it is me or because it is a bug, because I already had a minor issue earlier on (I was not able to pick up the energy cell).
My reply is within the spoiler below.
I am pretty sure you need to look for a key near the fence/gate. It’s hard to see.
Good Luck!
Thanks and thumbs up for your quick reply!
In The Sewer, trying to open the last shutter door in search of an exploding barrel to open the mesh gate. I found the codes for doors 1 and 2 but neither one works on door 1. I got frusytrated after an hour and a half trying to solve this and noclipped my way into the room behind door #1 and sure enough, there’s an exploding barrel in there but I can find no way to open that door. Any help with this?
I played this 5 years ago, so I have no idea. However, send my your last save and I will try to help.
Worth a play if you are into a adventure/puzzle mod. You have to look for keys,a keycard and codes to open doors. You may have trouble with the ending, I did.
Whatever you do don’t shoot the tank, a real game stopper.
I enjoyed most of it except the city was a bit boring.
Hand textures could use some redoing… like Phillip said, some parts were good, some were not. 3/5 for me. Like, look at those screenshots, some parts of the map were quite empty. It would be nice if the creator of this mod made some adjustments. I’m looking forward for V2 of this mod. :3
What makes you think there will be a version 2? Has it been announced or anything?
No, like a remake or something. Better textures/models or more lighting or something? Something like that… That would be nice. :3
Phillip, what ‘secret area” are you referring to ?
Right near the end. You get the HEV and have some hard fights in a kind of arena.
In the house right near the buggy, if you can get into the room with the “locked” door, there’s an entrance to an underground area. Go play there.
Enjoy!
Hi All, I’m stuck again! after opening door number two. where the two doors trap you in with the gas. then I get lasers when shooting the pipe supports?
Thanks for a hint!
Don’t know how to make a Spoiler section.
You have to shoot the pipes from before entering the whole area, then once all the lasers are visible, walk and jump through the area to avoid them. Quicksave after seeing all the lasers but before entering! Hope that helps.
Chapter 8, from the walkthrough – ” go past the Combine Gate/Shield Wall “? This is right after killing the Hunter. The electrical field grid stops that from being possible? What am I missing? Help!
Love the mod, many hours of gameplay, except the author outfoxed himself on over designing the mod. Some will rate it highly, calling it clever, some will rate it poorly as its (intentionally, I think), annoying. I’m not turned off very much by the uneven quality, not all that important to me.
Just to add, I think I did everything down below, including reaching the room at the end and pushing the button on the console. On the screen on the console after pushing the button, it does show that blocking blue/green electrical grid too.
The lack of crosshairs meant I abandoned doing a different area, since discovered the “crosshair 1” command and completed the mod.
Like Philip already mentioned, the mod includes a lot of switches in terms of quality.
Nethertheless this mod makes many things great, nice areas where you can really see that the author put some thoughts into the mapping.
Also this mod includes so many good ideas, simple things like the wood that blocks the door.
Or that funny part with the dispenser which explodes after you got the nade from it ^^
Still, there are some things that I missed, some sort of ectase in combat, the levels are mostly the same, the enemies are placed very well, but you keep fighting the same ones, only in the last one you meet a bunch of new enemies.
Also the keys are so goddamn hard to see, just making the key red or yellow can’t really be that hard.
Anyway, I give it a Play it now cause of the funny and good ideas, and the very high quality of the map layouts.
It took a long time to decide what rating to give this, and eventually settled on a PIN because of the long gameplay time and periods of true enjoyment.
On the other hand, the over the top complexity of puzzles combined with poor design and colour of keys and solutions create unnecessary frustration and make me wonder what the author’s overall design intention was. Countering that, the author was good enough to include a walkthrough, but then again what does the necessity of having that say – kind of supports my criticism.
The variation in visual appearance has already been discussed at length. Its not a key thing for me, in fact some of the ‘retro” feel of HL1 graphics thrown in to the mod made me chuckle.
Yes there was repetitive enemies and combat, although there were also enough variations along the way.
All in all, definitely something to play!
I really enjoyed this long mod. The mapping was very intricate. I liked the way you could glimpse areas before you could get to them, for example. I was surprised at the end – having very cleverly, so I thought, broken into a room full of every type of weapon and ammo, I didn’t get to use any of it. That brought a wry smile! Very nice work and congratulations to Blood_Wraith.
All right folks, conssidering the few mods we’re having nowdays this is a must play because of the lenght and mostly because it feels like a kind of old fashioned school mod where u have to look for the keys to open some doors, conect power in order to keep moving and things like that.
Altough I feel that this mod is yep like a roller coaster where u get really high parts and then just plainly downs full of lacks of combat and actions, I feel that in some big areas the author sacrifice things like a good combat or a good shoot down the heli, moments, I have to admit that I nocliped like 4 times mostly on the 1st parts because finding the solution to the closed doors was really hectic at the beggining, the end was sober and kind of boring, to much centered in finding out the secret area instead of having a good final combat, against some elite overwatch, some extra hunters, (2 of them really suprised me in the last map in the warehouse part), some helicopter, or maybe a strider, so I didn’t like the end also the begining was sober and some puzzles were exhaustive to me.
Anyway, it was an ok mod despite of those issues I mentioned avobe, i’ts worthy to play it, but I hope this author have learned the modding experience and offer us better quality mods in some near future, maybe some kind of arena style or maybe the sewer2, I agree in this please change the name claim, and yep so I think a 2nd part would be better improved and based on quality probably turns into a really good mod, being optimistic of course!.
Overall I liked it, but some of the areas were just a bit too back and forth over and over confusing. One thing I really liked was smashing the Beefy computers and making all the components inside the case go flying…LOL. I haven’t seen that before but I haven’t played every mod in the world either….. I couldn’t use any of the suit powerups but I assume that is because I wasn’t on easy mode? Also, I finally used the console to turn on the crosshairs. I love long maps and that is why I give this a play it now. Most of the areas were fairly well done although some were pretty useless.
The mod has its ups and downs like many of them. I played the Sewer last night and got really upset at the frequent crashes, so I looked at the gameinfo.txt file to see if there was some way to stop that. The original file showed…

When I re-joined the level from the ” saved” point, the mod never crashed again! Also, the original background from Team Bio displayed instead of the Steam one.
Oddly enough, the area I was exploring in the game was pitch-black so I had to use the flashlight but couldn’t progress even a couple of steps…crash! If I left the flashlight off & walked it was ok, but two steps w/the flashlight on… crash again! This happened a while back with Slums 2, but that was before the fixes, now it’s ok.
Thank you so much for this!
I’ve just finished playing this and was hugely impressed. Didn’t have any crashes, but a bit laggy in places, but only for a few seconds and mostly caused by soundtracks/effects, I think. It didn’t cause me to dislike the game in any way. Kills were too easy in some parts and not so easy in others. Enjoyed it so much I’m going to play it again on difficult setting. Well done blood_wraith.
A good long mod – just what I like. And entertaining too!
Highly recommended!
About the end? Very strange – what are all the buttons for? finally get the suit and finish?
awesome episode. best I’ve played. thank you to the maker/s
How did he get the Counter-Strike props in here?
I think this mod IMO is a love/hate type play. Most everything about it has been covered in previous comments. It’s just very Disjointed. I don’t believe the author had the player in mind when this was being made rather just made what he enjoyed and wanted, which is fine however when a player can’t really follow the authors intentions or get a feel for it, It absolutely becomes frustrating. I think this mod could have been a fantastic piece of work, It had a lot to “potentially” offer but fell off the mark, not many highs and too many real Lows especially for the length of it. Puzzles should be made to challenge and make a player think of the solutions, but some of those inserted in this mod where all over the place in terms of, do I need a battery, a wire, a key, a code, do I need them all at once etc etc…..near the end I spotted a battery and carried it for what seemed to be forever only to find out it was never needed and I can also remember in some parts rooms having grunts in them that I naded only to have debris cover and hide a critical key I needed to proceed. In the early going of this mod I must admit to using noclip to proceed, not because I didn’t know what was needed but because I got sick of needing to back track to every open room in a given level just to realize some barrel or computer piece or whatever was covering up what I needed. I really wanted to like this and at times I thought I would but it never got there.
im finding it difficult to find somewhere to start with this review…. THE SEWER is one of the best mods ive played in a long time… its actually been on my steam games list for 2 years but I never got around to playing it… but im glad I did
for a solo project this is amazing and sean should be extremely proud of himself…. it must of took many hundreds of hours work to complete this mod… infact I would actually buy this if it were a retail game… its that good
i especially enjoyed the trolley/train section of the game… and the puzzles were well placed and fairly difficult…. I spent the longest period of the game looking for the 3 explosive barrels….
I could go on.. however all I will say is download this mod and spend a night completing it… you will love it…. I did….
one of the best
Hi, is this mod still available through Steam somehow? My son saw the videos and would love to play it. I followed the download instructions above, and while the mod appeared in the library, when he clicked on it, it gave us the message “Source SDK Base 2007 is not available on your current platform”
I am wondering if the download/installation process has changed due to changes in Steam since the initial release. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks!
That’s a new one.. check your SDK 2007 location; mine’s still in the old SteamApps/[username] location. You can verify it via Steam/Library/Tools/Source SDK base 2007 then right-click on it – Properties/Local Files/Verify Integrity of Tool Cache, however it sounds more serious than that.
The Sewers – not to my knowledge; vlavle have killed it with their latest turdpipe mod-toxic update. Even if you do get past the missing .vtf errors, you end up with “Could not load library client” and then as far as I know that’s game over.
Keep In Mind:If anyone is having trouble finding this modification you will not be able to find it under the name The Sewers. The modification has been renamed to Claustrophobia and the developer is named Blood Wraith.
Just in case you have trouble locating it.
I must admit this modification does have a lot of good factors and a fair amount of bad factors to it. I would definitely call this a YoYo modification there is a lot of back and fourth to it.
I would also suggest if you want this modification to be challenging “Don’t look at the walk-through for it!” I didn’t use a walk-through and I actually had a lot of trouble trying to finish it.
This is an extremely challenging modification if you decide not to read or reference the walk-through.
Most of this modification felt like a run around sadly, “Get 10 different keys to open these doors”, “Get these batteries to open this door”, Flip this switch on…now flip it off”.
This modification however, did have really decent sized maps and lots of twists and turns. I didn’t know where to start for most areas.
Tried to play this via Maptap (have not yet tried installing it manually) but I get the weird engine error:
43/monitor_breencast_jumbotron2 – func_monitor: UTIL_SetModel: not precached: *4
And it won’t start the game, shutting down after attempting to load the main start page. I saw a non-native-resolution developer load screen and “loading”, then it died before anything else happened. Going to try manually installing but I kind of wanted to use maptap for it since it’s much easier to remove things and this IS a pretty large mod.
*edited
Can’t even find the executable when I try running it manually. Bummer, so many of these really good looking mods seem to have been completely broken by that one major Steam pipe move.
Don’t play this mod. It’s aweful.
To avoid confusion, I’d recommend to change this mod’s name from “The Sewer” to “Claustrophobia”. To make it playable on current installations, I’d recommend to include the existing SDK 2013 Patch.
I enjoyed this quite lengthy mod (which IMHO is far from awful), but it’s not without some quirks. As its old name “The Sewer” indicates, environments are mostly underground/sewers/office-like, with not too much variety. That said, you’ll see plenty of daylight in the last (eighth) map. There’s much searching for keys, codes etc., so you’ll really have to like this kind of gameplay. What I actually found most annoying was the terrible color of the HUD, which is a kind of green that makes your crosshair completely disappear on most of the backgrounds. Unfortunately HUD/crosshair color is something you cannot change with console commands 🙁
That said, combat is solid, visuals are on the appealing side and playing time is quite generous, so you could do much worse than playing this mod.

Man… what could I possibly say about this.. mod. The story is quite unclear, at the first level it took me around 2 minutes to figure out that I needed to pick up a key (material item picking is not really a thing in half life games, so I wouldn’t know that I had to pick up a key) and move on.
I really gave this a go and I didn’t give up until I realised that the mod is just not finished. I wouldn’t play this mod.

Well, this was an adventure alright! Not in the tradition sense but more with putting up with a near-disappearing crosshair, awkward puzzles, bugs and a few crashes. I had to use noclip about 4/5 times to get by areas that were inaccessible. I cross-referenced with Sean’s video on YT and behold the same areas that had an unlocked door or spawn fast and poisen zombies. Also, I had two areas which bombed my Mac back to the desktop, but again the noclip saved the day and i simply bypassed that area.
Okay, I can take a few bugs but this was ridiculous! So it’s a good job that I’ve spent a superb few hours playing this awesome mod. Sure, people are right, there are some really poor areas in the game which make you wonder what Sean was on at the time. But overall, this was a superb adventure.
The explorational element across some really atmospheric places was top notch. However, I did find some of the puzzles a little bit of a drag. Esp looking for a bomb to blow up a wall when I already had grenades! Or a key which didn’t shine up very well on a desk when i had the flashlight active, so i sometimes found myself backtracking for no good reason.
However, these niggles apart, this is a great adventure and one I really enjoyed playing. Shame about the bugs and some of the silly ideas because they spoiled what I would have rated a PF otherwise.

hello, i’ve played this mod to chapter 6 and so far it’s good , but i somehow lack the textures and models for it , once i get to a certain spot the game crashes , i have all the half life parts downloaded besides css , i don’t know what am i missing here that the game shows errors. Please let me know on what to do.
A bit late for you I suppose, for later readers:
(I have the same problems)
workaround: skip the second part of map 3 and load manually map 4): open the console, typ (or copy /aste) map sewer4
and enter. (that way you begin map 4 and you get a pistol, but not a crowbar – so give you, cheating, a crowbar)
Wake me when it’s over. Boring.

I will start off by saying this is a mod that I love. It’s scratches an itch I have when playing long mods. Not sure what it is, but it’s not crammed with combat, or lacking any at all. I have replayed this mod several times since I first started recording my time nearly 15 days ago. It took me over 3 hours to beat it mainly because of one key flaw in the map. I didn’t realize that one of the computers could be used to get a key code. All of the computers up to that point were prop_physics. I have not found a mod like this that has such classic fan-made design while still being very long. It almost felt like I was playing a demaster of a AAA game. Demaster meaning purposely downgraded to fit a specific niche.
Flaws:
Bare bones and very long.
Confusing puzzles
Dramatic changes in theme
Strengths:
Very interesting level design
Easy Combat
Good lighting
Final Comments: Play it now! There is a page on ModDB called “Claustrophobia”. This is that mod. Play that version as it’s updated a bit.
