1. Phillip says Play It!

I’ve just posted two other mods by this author, and this is by far the best one. It still has a lot of faults but feels much more polished.

I am sure I missed areas because I think I went down an elevator when I was supposed to follow a rebel and the screen went black and I got stuck.

The last save was just too far back for me to find the motivation to replay the sections.

I had fun with this and I think you may too, but don’t expect details in the same way the better modders include them.

1. Tony

I don’t believe the elevator is supposed to open as the door the rebel takes you through is the same one you went through in photo 18 .
The rebel then proceeds to the shed/outbuiling (with the switch you can’t operate) & opens the large gates where you left the air boat
1. Yeah, that’s what I thought, but when I went back to the battle with the Combine Elite Guards, it didn’t fade to black and the previous save was waaaaay further back.

2. toops

Btw this requires Ep1. (or atleast it asks me to install ep1 which I dont want)

1. toops is right Phillip. This is an EP1 mod

2. Sorry about that. I have updated the post and links.

3. Play It Later

The bad
Too many empty areas.
Long walks hither and yon.
One of the slowest train rides ever.
Music is irritating and intrusive.

The good
You get the Airboat, always good fun.
Everything works as it should.
The combat gameplay is fun and very good, quite hard in places.
A good length mod.
Worth replaying in Hard.

A must play to me.

4. Play It Now!

I haven’t tried the author’s other 2 mods but this one I thought needed a bit more time spent on it and it would be really good, the potential is there with some extra work.
Gaps between textures, the odd AI facing completely the wrong way, end drop off of maps clear to see, some convoluted ways of progressing though it does make you think which I like. Also liked the way you are almost backtracking to progress rather than just an obvoius way forward. Combat hard in places, also have to agree the music doesn’t suit but maybe thats just my taste and the train ride is lacking something, it’s mundane at the moment. The end is dissapointing.

In saying all the above the author has talent and I hope he continues, he has given us an hour plus mod to play for free which is fun and engaging.
Keep up the work please.

5. Master74

Good to see new maps for Ep1. Keep up!

6. Play It Later

Interesting mod.
Firstly nothing exceptional, zombies, crabs, and suddenly combines falls on you. Fight your way, get fun with RPG, and get down to second map.
There it look like a deja vu, quarantine area, launch a rocket, go trough a railway, boot up Lambda Reactor.
When you return to the surface you think you reach the end but you rise up with a resistant after being captured by elites soldiers. I didn’t understood this scene. Maybe due to Russian.
Fight your way, turn and re-turn on the map an finally, escape.

I notice on good point the scenario and gameplay and on leak point th rare health/battery available and some mapping error.

What a terrific design you have πŸ™‚ your web site articles are quite useful too. Many thanks πŸ˜€

Phillip, sometimes I just can’t understand how you’ve rated stuff like this at 5 stars. I guess every man has his own taste. πŸ™‚
Everything below is absolutely personal opinion.
It’s obviuos to me — author if this mod doesn’t now the meaning of the word gameplay.
You’re starting without HEV. And I felt like I walked in it absolutely by accident in later game.
I was like “WTF where I must go? Fences is everywhere and I don’t have crowbar to brake crates!” in two minutes after start. Never a good sign. Well, I restarted. And the most stupid and unobvious decision suddenly pays off.
And repelling combines and then zombies in upcoming elevator 6 feets further… Sorry, doesn’t make any sense. Or fun.
Seriously, it could be much better with a reason in things like “where to go, how to go and who could be met where”!

1. Phillip, sometimes I just can’t understand how you’ve rated stuff like this at 5 stars. I guess every man has his own taste.

Exactly. Personally, I don’t use my system as a star rating, although it does have the stars in it I use it as whether I would recommend somebody to play something. Perhaps it has lots of flaws but it was still worth playing in my opinion.

2. I totally agree with you, I felt exactly the same way. I kept getting stuck in the map and had to noclip out, & once I’ve had to noclip, that’s it for me – immersion gone. This one just had nothing to make you want to keep going, and so many ‘two fingers up at you” locked doors, dodgy event triggers, ear-RAPE ‘music” , tedious backtracking etc. just made me feel like saying “Yeah, well same to you buddy” and then when it all went permanently black after descending the elevator (after the rebel was going on about the price of salted fish, or some damned thing – who knows) then that was the final straw – quit, delete, move on.

9. Play It Now!

I can’t see why there is a problem with repelling combines?
Personally I liked this mod.
Cool ambience to it and some nice fights as well.
I almost ran out of ammo at a stage but I’ll guess I should run instead of pumping out all my rounds at once…

10. Play It Later

I enjoyed most of this mod. The combat was challenging at times and the author issued heath just in the nick of time more than a few times. I found myself down to single digit health a few times but made it through. This is one of those mods where some extra running around and knowing the Russian language is required to figure out where to go or what to do next. So, this might frustrate some linear minds. The music was annoying in some places and became a distraction. I guess I could have deleted the offending sound files. It is worth the effort to play.

11. Anonymous

This is a mod that leaves a relatively bad taste in my mouth. From the odd Stalker screenshots for an opening to the weird “ending” that in so many ways I managed to break without knowing. I don’t know if I finished the mod or it just faded to black to give up on me.

It’s hard to thoroughly describe why I don’t like it beyond I’ve seen it before. It’s over-ambitious and lazy at the same time, featuring weird unbalanced gameplay (HL2 without armor turns out to be a really hard game), easy-to-break events, and an overall lack of detail.

1. How did you get to the point where it fades to black? Do you get there with the airboat? Where do you go???

1. Honestly, it’s not worth reloading & pursuing – just delete it.

12. Play It Now!

This not a “keeper” for certain but I liked it.
See all the good comments already stated.
Loved the airboat..
Some of the action was quite hard but I enjoyed it.

14. I’m stuck at scene #6. After I go through the gate and defeat the 6 combine soldiers that rope down, there is an elevator at the end of the yard that does not work. There is a small container that you can’t climb up. Two more Combine soldier blast thru a wall but you can’t climb into the hole that they have created from the blast. Where do you go? I Need to get to the boats next.

1. I didn’t have a problem here Filthy McNasty.
You’ve taken out the 2 Speed Zombies, yes?

Without meaning to insult your intelligence but sometimes the blindingly obvious can be easily missed:
Ignore the outside red button, use the one in the lift.

You have to use the lift.
There’s an auto save just before the 6 Combine rope down, try re-loading that and see if it works.
If still no go, I can only suggest deleting, re downloading and re-installing.
Everything in the mod does work and it’s a mod worth playing, for sure.

1. Thanx for the reply Jasper, I had to keep pressing the elevator button before it finally worked. I found that must of the activator buttons were hard to get to work.

Maybe you can help me with something else. I activated to destruc button for the generator and I’m trying to end the mod. I get back to the airboat, but don’t know which way to go. I end up going back to places that I’ve already been.

15. Mel
Play It Later

Mixed feelings about this, certainly a lot of hard and good work went into this mod, however it had a few issues, plus being messy and confusing in places.

The rail ride section had me guessing and I traveled most of the rail on foot. The elevator to Buggy would not trigger, I needed to noclip. I never did understand the end, come to that I don’t know if I did complete the mod. As Phillip’s comment said, the mod was taking one back too far after the faded scene between the two fence gates, where the Elite guard suddenly appear. I had had enough by then, so called it a day.

Some parts of the mod are fairly hard even for the experienced player, and you will need to repeat a few sequences to carry on playing with health left. Health is hard to find in some places resulting in dying a lot.

The authors have given use all the vehicles to ride, i.e. the rail, boat and boggy, however, the mod does not make the best of any of these means of transport being just a token piece of gameplay in each case.

To repeat, there is a lot of good work gone into this mod such that many sequence are both fun to play while being easy on the eye, but it’s not a mod I would recommend too highly, just too many faults for my liking.

16. Think Twice

I finally got to the end of the mod somehow, one time between the 2 fences as mel points out above when the elite appear I had a message ” player in unattended landmark” or something to that effect ( I did use the buggy to get to that side of the fence as I think was intended as those warehouse doors had opened after blowing up the armored vehicle)
then it faded to black.

I had luckily saved it just prior to that so I reloaded and went the same way leaving the buggy inside and took out most of the elite, again faded to black but got a “loading” screen. It then took me to an area that I had been to before and met a rebel, he opened up a gate for me to proceed with the airboat to return to another area I had already been to get the “other airboat” and on and on untill the credits appeared.

This to me was just very sloppy, confusing and too much backtracking or forced back to areas already explored. I was excited when it got to the rail car ride at first as I like this mode of transportation BUT it was slow and didn’t serve a whole lot of use.

I think the authors ideas were well intended but just not executed very well at all.

Play It Later

I dont jnow I was glad with this one, till I got to the part with the car ambush, from then I didn’t know what the hell to do!! I used noclip till, I noticed I have 2 get back via airboat again, and then I got stuck in the yard where map1 started, then I used noclip again in order to pass to the last section where you get the buggy, and have to get outta there, I don’t know but I was glad at the beggining but then everything fall to dust when that bad and winding return ending left that bitter taste, so yeah is well to left it as a play it later.

Oh and again russian voices I didn’t understand a thing please BINOCL, use subtitles when u do that…

18. tzs

now this is my favorite. Good music, good maps. damage that is short, I’d appreciate if you would be continued… πŸ™‚

19. Anon_260043

Stuck on map 2 at the point where you have to flood the turbine without being electrocuted

20. Think Twice

Too confusing. From the start, too many large empty non-detailed cooridoors. What’s worse, backtracking and button pushing to be done, just to have to trek through an already explored area. Or lot’s of puzzles just to get from one side of a fence, to the other side. This really slowed down gameplay to a crawl, and is frustrating.

In the case of having to cross a fence or obstical, the player has to follow the script….and cant figure out a different way to get across an obstical, lest the player is blocked by the hated invisable wall. So, this player quickly lost interest. Mabye the airboat ride would of been good, but I lost too much interest long before that.

Unless your in love with backtracking and puzzels, think twice.

21. Think Twice

Well, the author shared his efforts, so marks for that, and clearly this has been a lot of work, but it’s just not playable. Frustrating, illogical, annoying, broken, tedious, futile – all these things came to mind, just before I deleted it. Come to that, I want my 40mins of life back! Everyone else has detailed the problem points at length, suffice it to say that I agree – it’s only just a ‘think twice” for me, really it should be “avoid” if I’m honest. Hopefully the next one will be much improved.

23. Maybe?

I could not get the mod to run. Background image etc. I ran the maps from HL2 console. 1st map was good looking and plays pretty good. Second map was missing a script from the mod folder so I got stuck. Worth a try anyway.

24. Think Twice

I’m not sure what did, but I didn’t get any weapons or suit, but yet I was wondering around and suddenly got the end credits? I know there are two maps, but I guess I beat it? I did get kinda lost and manged to clip out of bounds by stacking some props. I don’t think I will try to replay it since I couldn’t find a suit anywhere.

Annoyances: No suit, very dark, no weapons (despite the screenshots)

Edit: After being really curious, I did replay it briefly and I did find a crowbar.. somewhere?
