A simple one map mod, where you must escape from City 5.

Author’s Description

Deep within a location now know as City 5 a man awakens. An unknown rebel living within the slums of City in a room with barely enough space to stand up he begins his journey to the cost and to freedom. You play as an unknown rebel who must escape the city by any means necessary you journey through the city whilst fighting to avoid becoming the combines next victim. City 5 consists of one beautifully made map but unfortunately does not feature any unique game play, just pure enjoyment over the fantastic map accompanied by beautiful music City 5 is the brainchild of Tom Gothorp a hardcore half-life 2 fan from England. This mod was approximately two months in the making due to school work and the fact that this was only a one man operation. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed making it.”

Don’t believe the author’s description, the map isn’t beautiful. Nice in places and not so nice in others.

There’s not really enough gameplay overall and no buildup to the final sequence.

The author included a few different sections but, as is often the case, the way they are joined together never feels quite real or right.

The underground section could have been really good but it was way too dark and even then the darkness was never utlized properly with some scary elements.

The inclusion of the Jalopy got me slightly excited but you don’t really get to use it properly and as such it caused me more disappointed than it was worth.

The file seems awfully large for such a small map and most of the size comes from the materials folder, so there must be lots of custom content, but I admit I didn’t notice it, except for right at the beginning.

Talking of which, the beginning of the mod looks interesting but all that work is wasted because we leave the area rather quickly. Perhaps the author should have kept us in that style of area for longer, or at least made better use of it.

The music, whilst nice, is completely out of place. That’s what happens with one man mods though. It needed somebody to question it. Probably a case of “Hey, I have composed this nice music, I think I’ll add it!” I am curious as to how much beta testing this mod receieved.

Which brings me onto some errors. There were some very obvious technical errors that should have been fixed before release. Driving through the tunnel will make that clear.

    Maybe?

    PP says it all.
Nice punch up at the end though. Worth a play but probably not a replay

  3. Maybe?

Lots of nice areas but doesn’t make use of them at all. The underground area, for an example, could’ve had some nice surprises but nothing happened.

Way too large for one single map; which itself isn’t very long either. Phillip said there’s a lot of custom content but, except for the music, I didn’t notice anything but the standard textures and models.

Could’ve also used some testing; right in the beginning the framerate took a nose dive but became better as I progressed.

  4. Maybe?

It started nicely. The early alleyways looked and felt great, despite the horrendous framerate issues (poor optimisation on the mapper’s part?). However, as Phillip said, the areas often felt disconnected and the transitions were uninteresting. Several times I walked into a room to find one or two metrocops just standing there waiting for me. It would have been nice if they ran in through a door or were doing something previously.

The end was a let-down, as the Jalopy was used for about 20 seconds and then it became extremely difficult. I had to cheat for the last battle. I couldn’t run over all the soldiers at once so the surviving ones destroyed me at close range. I couldn’t take them out from a distance as my weapons were either inaccurate or weak and there was no cover. I also wasn’t sure if I was even meant to kill them, or whether I was a bad driver and couldn’t manage to break through the blockade. This area needed a lot of work.

    Maybe?

I opened a door and stepped outside where a headcrab canister immediately killed me. Then the mod loaded from the beginning. No, thank you.

I haven’t decided if this thing is really worth the download time and space required. I find it kind of strange that an author would critique his own work in such glowing terms. I kind of feel like I’m being sold a “real” Rolex. Maybe best to allow the players to decide just how wonderful this is instead of you doing your own amazing review. lol

    Why the hate?
It is a very beautiful map, textures looks super sharp, everthing is very detailed. You have to play this map on max settings to enjoy it.

The author certainly does himself a disservice with the text description he chooses. Other than that, while the map was too short for a mod, it had a few good moments. I liked the introduction and music, set a mood very well, there just wasn’t much that followed to back it up.

The whole thing could be made so much better if it carried on with new add on maps. At the finish of this, there could for example be a gravity gun found once the shield was down, that would allow the concrete to be moved.

  9. Maybe?

    This was okay. Short.

I didn’t really feel like the music at the beginning was out of place. There was almost too much stuff in the alley to make walking very easy, though. There was also almost too much stuff near the trains, but maybe it’s cargo from a wrecked train car? (That didn’t interfere with walking; I just felt like something was supposed to happen down there.)

Getting the car was pointless, unless the author wants to continue this map. As soon as I started getting shot at I jumped out and grabbed some cover–then wondered if I was supposed to run over the Combine. After reading the comments here, I guess not… If the author does want to continue and the car is needed further on, the barriers should be farther apart or something.

  10. Maybe?

This is a rather pretty map to look at, and it’s well detailed even in areas the player can’t go (especially in the start). I’m not sure if it’s just me, did anyone else have framerate issues? (I have a gaming PC)

The gameplay is not great but definitely not bad. Combat is alright throughout but there’s a pretty fun part at the end. The map itself is extremely linear, and I feel like the author payed more attention to how the map looks and then put enemies in as an afterthought. The jalopy is kinda pointless but I like the secret in the tunnel.

Overall, if you want something pretty to look at and don’t mind a pretty easy map, you should play this. Those looking for a challenge, look elsewhere.

    Looks and plays good. Short.

  12. Avoid It!

Sorry, didn’t enjoy the mod at all
