THE DESCRIPTION CONTAINS LOTS OF SPOILERS

This mod starts in a prison cell, which is of course getting really boring, but I suppose we have to start somewhere. After finding you way out, you need to move around a few areas killing everything in your path. So far, so good. Eventually you survive and reach outside to find an Antlion guard running around like a little lost boy.

It’s too easy to get past it (BTW, are Antlions male or female?) and whilst this area looks pretty it didn’t really live up to its visual promise.

The Gman makes an appearance, which is nice but to get through to the next section you must turn off the power meaning you are left in the dark. This is of course the perfect opportunity to introduce Zombies

Soon you find yourself in a train station and need to get on a train which somehow starts moving when you enter (Ooo, that’s lucky I hear you cry).

The train stops and you find yourself looking for a way out. This will eventually lead you to a really nice area that gives you plenty of game and is certainly the best part of the mod.

(Extra Spoiler: if you are stuck in this area, back track to the station)

Then get back on the train and await your fate.

Okay, so what did I think about it? I actually quite enjoyed it but wish that instead of trying to offer so many different environments the author had chosen to use two but make them great. In fact the train stopping at stations is a perfect concept for adding new areas.

I know the reviewer at City17 didn’t like it much but that last outdoor area was fun. If the screenshots look okay to you then you should certainly consider it.

    More detail, less areas, please.

I haven’t played this, but if this is your new style of “hardcore” reviews (just a basic description of what happens, and if areas were good or not), I think you should go back to your old reviews.

Hey, love the site. Been coming here for months now and catching up on all the great mods and maps I missed. As far as this one goes, it’s not too bad, but I can’t tell if I’m having technical problems with this map or not. Without saying too much, after the second stop, the train begins moving again and….. blackness.Anyone else play this? Is there an “ending” that I’m missing?

  4. Gypsy Jim
    Maybe?

The transition from map 4 to 5 doesn’t always seem to work, if it does all just go black on the train try manually loading map 5.

I did get stuck in the large area at the end, but now after re-reading Phillip’s comment above I might go back & replay that bit, it’s a shame it wasn’t even remotely obvious what you were supposed to do there though….

As mods go it’s fairly short, looks nice, and was enjoyable for the most-part, but didn’t really get my interest going all that much.

  5. it’s a shame it wasn’t even remotely obvious what you were supposed to do there though

Whilst I am not completely defending the author and the situation, you had just turned on a generator and if you followed the cable it looked like it was leading back into the area you left or at least underground.

I only worked out where to go after not finding any other way I just went back to the train.

  6. Thats how I figured it out too.Probably would of been a good spot to put a cut scene showing lights coming on back up the path you had just come from

  7. Gypsy Jim

I followed the cable, to an area gated off with wooden gates, with a gap on the left. Ha, I thought before piling up crates and totally not managing to jump over, and then giving up. Well, I say giving up, what I mean is after “noclipping” around looking to see if I’d missed anything….As all I could find was the vent I’d come through to get there, I thought I’d missed a trigger point or something. Then I gave up again…

Will go and have another look now.

    🙂

  8. Robspace1

It may be my system but-the ending-SPOILER******SPOLIER******was not right. I got back on the train, it’s takes off, the lights go out, it stops, and I’m left standing there in the dark. Thats it? It must have not loaded another map. That can’t be the ending right?

  9. sofasleeper

    ^^ That’s the “ending” I experienced..

  10. If anyone one reads files that are are enclosed with the mods it says……….map5 … heck just read it.Thats what they are there for.Nobody reads em I don’t know why I put them there.

  11. Robspace1

Thing is Andy-this is not a beta mod and there should not need to be any reloading of maps to play the mod. Why not get it right from the start and allow people to play through uninterupted. It takes away from the game completely to have to reload a map just to finish the mod. I’ll pass. It wasn’t that great anyway.

  12. I tried reloading the map manually, and it did the same thing. I enjoyed what part of it I played, but I guess I’ll leave it at that.

Yep that’s the ending I got too but after a while the screen went white?
For those who have not read the read me…
    Quote
“Map 5 I dunno whats with that. After the train crashes the screen fades to black and it seems you fall out of the map?? The END??I dunno.Thats a question for the person who made the maps”.

The console read:-and maybe one of the experienced mappers can figure it out.

    Loading game from SAVEautosave.sav…
    Loading game from //MOD/SAVE/hard_escape_5.HL1…
Precache called on a point_template that has no templates: template_2_car001a_parts
    Redownloading all lightmaps
CreateInstance called on a point_template that has no templates: template_2_car001a_parts
DataTable warning: prop_physics: Out-of-range value (29176.833984) in SendPropFloat ‘m_vOrigin[0]’, clamping.

  14. Thats not the problem. It says crap like that on most any HL game or mod.I changed a couple things so it would not say “low velocity” I think it was.If ya no clip from right before it goes black and wait, then move about you can find the train burning etc but your pc may lock up if you venture near the train.I didn’t have alot of time to work with this one and havent looked at it since then but I would assume that is the end as it is a small map.

  16. J-Man

Didn’t have any problems figuring the pathway, nor did I experience any loading prob’s or bug’s to speak of..It was a So,So, small MOD, it wasn’t hard. I didn’t mind the ending, I was ready to stop playing it due to “boredom”. ( my personal opinion, no offense to anyone )

  17. SolidFake
    Maybe?

Simple mod with a lot of potential, but sadly it didn’t reached it.
Start’s boring, Zombie area is pretty neat, especially when you press the button and all lights get out, and when a lot of zombies are in front of you but you can’t go back, cause the door’s closed.
I’m no source mapping pro, but this mod has ugly shadows and missing texture alignment.
I really thought, yea now I go to the city, when I exited at the train station, but unfornately only some combine appeared in front of me and suddenly a door was now unlocked and another locked

Lot’s of potential, a shame that it didn’t become more.

  18. Black Dog

What ever happen to the end? I thought my screen froze up on me! Gimmie a break. At least put a “The End” sign or have the G-Man acknowledge the game was over. Don’t leave me hanging, expecting more!
It was a good 1/2 hour well spent. Except for the ending. 🙁

  19. Play It Now!

I liked it ’til the end, then that damn ending… :-\ But, overall, a decent mod with some good gameplay. I do recommend it.

  20. Mel

Agree with must of the above comments and experience the same faults, overall it’s worth a play through but don’t expect too much. Plenty of zombies with head and spider crabs, apart from that can’t recall too many moments of exhilarating gameplay.
If you are short of a fix then give it a play, there is a load of newly release stuff far worst then this mod out there at the moments.

The ending is crap. The maps are OK. The combat is OK. It’s OK. That’s all it is.
    OK?

  22. Ratzoid
    Think Twice

I thought something was wrong with my pc … screen goes black, no flashlight but you can still shoot??? Then when I moved it was like a film strip melting , white with yellow and blue edges, then poof ! The End …. I guess ? From what everybody says… I tried reloading and got the same thing with no weapons Very strange ending.

    Play It Now!

The ending was indefensible, it was that bad. However sections of the rest of the map made it well worth playing. I agree that the outdoor battle later on was really well done. The brief outdoor section early on in the map is the opposite.

So a ‘mixed bag’. I still thought it was a play-it-now kind of map.

  24. Maybe?

Actually not bad for gameplay. Some of the areas didn’t quite seem to fit, but that’s not something I normally nitpick about.

I think the backtrack at the end isn’t necessarily intuitive because there’s not really any in HL2 itself–only in mods.

I also really disliked the end (fade to black).

  25. Play It Later

It played seamlessly for me. The ending was a little strange, but I have played a lot of maps that just end with a fade to black. Overall, I’d say that it was pretty good. I did have the advantage of reading all of the comments before playing though.

  26. Play It Now!

    Wow, fantastic!
    Eerie and well done.

  27. Ade

Well I lasted 7 and a half minutes in this mod. After messin about with Use and flashlight in the small prison cell, and trying to break the grate with the bed, as nothing else was usable, there was a boom that simply made me wait for some rebels to come open the prison door, and when no one came after minutes of waiting, and messing about some more, I randomly turn flashlight on for the nth time and look at the vent that now has a MISSING grate! So it simply vanished/broke during the explosion, I think, without any hint given to the player, in a room with no light?!

    Avoid it….

  28. Maybe?

For a first mod, this is actually pretty good. The enemies are well placed and the last battle with Combine was really fun to me. There are also lots of environments, it really feels like you’re on a journey. However, there are some design flaws, such as one part forcing damage and one part making it very difficult to avoid. The biggest sin this mod commits, though, is a really, really, really long airvent… that you have to go through twice. Screw that I say, I noclipped it the second time. The other flaw is that it never really has much atmosphere. The only music is the techno battle music, nothing ambient ever shows up.

If you can forgive the flaws I described, I think you might just enjoy this. Although, as many other people said, the ending sucks.

  29. Play It Later

Looks ok. Plays ok. Not really polished. Not sure I finished it. Noclipped around the last map, I could not find anywhere else to go.

  30. Think Twice

For HL2EP2 sourcemod, this is really bad. This is like one of those early HL2 maps in 2004. Blocky, and obstructive areas, unbalanced combat, the second sentence of this review pretty much summarizes this whole mod so there’s not much anything else to say. I almost forgot about the ending, it’s broken af.
