Asda

for Half-Life 2

2nd November 2008

Story

Set in 2030, global warming and an upsurge in population growth have taken their toll on humanity. In a world of dwindling food resources an increasing amount of large corporations try to find ways to sustain profits. Numerous ASDA shopping centres across the UK have secretly begun to abduct citizens and carry out inhumane tests to try to find a means of creating a perfect food product using alternative resources to that which have suffered over the past 23 years. In an attempt to keep this illegal operation covert, the multi-billion dollar business Wal-Mart based in America (who own ASDA) developed its own military and special police force that are currently in operation at all major Wal-Mart stores.

Stafford ASDA has become one of the most active and dominant locations for the experiments to take place as a result of several secret agents working on ASDAs behalf who successfully infiltrated and swayed the local police force into corruption.

After numerous abductions you fall victim to the hand of ASDA when you return home from work to find your wife and child missing. The police fail to satisfy your questions to find the truth, but the tides turn in your favour one night at a bar, when a sympathetic ASDA employee overhears your conversation with your friend. Feeling guilt under the weight of his immoral actions working for ASDA, he agrees to help you, supplying you with all the inside information you need to take revenge.

You make plans to infiltrate ASDA using the sewer entrance alongside the river bank using a keycard carefully concealed by your informant from the guards. Once inside you will then have to work your way up to the main floor; where you will need to locate a gas valve that has to be released in order for the main door leading to the experiment areas to become unstable and open. Your inside man has also agreed to hide a C4 explosive inside the main shopping area after you agree that it is too risky to try to get the explosives in safely and quietly through the river and sewer way. Once you acquire the explosives you must use it to destroy the core power and test silos at the far end of ASDA from where you entered, and then escape. The inside man has also informed you that he thinks there might be a teleporter located somewhere near the silos, which ASDA secret agents use to quickly get out into the Car Park area or to other ASDA stores, although it is likely to be unstable and inactive.

In preparation for your attack you set of several explosives at key road points at the surrounding area the night before, to encourage civilians away from ASDA.

    Well, this is an older mod and I don’t know how I missed it until I saw it on Grinder74.com.

    Overall I quite liked it but felt that it had more negatives than positives. The action and layouts were quite fun but the minor errors spolit it. It was too easy to get to places that you were not supposed to.

    SPOLIER BELOW.
    I thought the inclusion of fun was out of place. Firing melons from the rocket launcher and pizzas with the gravity gun was just plain silly.
    SPOLIER END

    The concpet of fighting within a supermarket could have been better explored, espcially if I couldn’t get on top of the shelves, which would have limited me greatly.
    Once outside the actions is obviously more open and I spent more time reaching hard to get to places than actually fighting. I have to admit the ending was hard to find and I missed the gun until after I had killed everything.

    Most weapons and enemies had a green tinge which obviously is connected to the coporate colour of ASDA but didn’t really work in context.

    The last point I didn’t like was the power of the new weapon. It was just too strong, I also had too much ammo for it. It was probably possible to complete the mod only using this weapon , except against the Strider.

    All in all a good try but lacking the details that separate ordinary from good.

    Hmmmmmm I’ve always wanted to have a “food fight” in a supermarket!!!

    You require a keycard that opens the door at one end of the river. The keycard is in a high place. I haven’t told you specifically because I thought you might prefer to find it, but I can tell you if you need me to.

  5. Stefan Wagner

    SORRY BUT I NEED MORE HELPING HANDS (-:. I cant find the keycard.

    Spoiler: When you run along the river wall, it’s in the hanging basket! you’ll find it!! 😉 Great “Food Fight” the game played very well!!

    Have only two maps.
    it is very short for me.

  8. Stefan Wagner

    its a very short game, but okay!

    At first this mod promised a lot but in the end it delivered very little, it was incomplete without a structured ending, so guessing more was planed or the author just run out of ideas and/or time. While it may have been taken from an actual location the inside store sets don’t strike me has being very realistic, ASDA UK a sub of Wal Mart USA was laid-out like no ASDA’s I have been in, here we had low shelving and wide aisle-ways, quit the opposite of me experience but maybe I am bit out of date with ASDA UK.

    There are plenty of weapons and ammo about but the challenge of the Combin doesn’t match up to strength and with one easy Strider to deal with the mod never reaches any high level of combat or general gameplay. This is one of the mods that builds a good base for an action filled story but in the end achieves nothing and just fades away for ever lost and locked out of your memory.

    Mel, didn’t you ever have a food fight in school?? I sure have, in Jr High, in Bloomington,Mn. we had a few!! This was a nice break from the usual “shoot ’em up” Hey, shooting pizzas, shopping carts, and watermellons at the combine was a ball! and the different type of pistol was nice and good at long range! Better than my military 45 was! But it was too short, a good start tho. But to each their own!! 😉

    I have played a lot of bad mods, and this is not one of them!
    I laughed at the ASDA H2 logo, I laughed at the speed of the rocket (watermelon) launcher.
    I loved the new gun, bang, no messing
    Yeah it is short and yeah it is not very hard.
    But it is different and it is a laugh.

  12. Mel

    No AI, not much food about when I went to school in London just after the 2nd WW, I am kidding a bit but take your point and I do enjoy humor in mods but this one disappointed on all fronts.

    OK! that was interesting, bringing down a strider with watermelons (not ripe I assume). I’m astounded how much it was like the ASDA at Leytonstone at 7 am on a Saturday, on the edge of the 2012 Olympic site. I particularly liked the new pistol, one shot one kill at long range.

    *Spoilers abound*
    This mod kinda seemed undecided on whether it was trying to be funny or serious. At first you seem to start out on a serious mission (albeit generic to every rebel in HL2) to save your family from combine, the game seems to completely forget about this plot the moment you enter the ASDA store. Soon you are on a mission to plant C4 into a vent, then teleport to some unknown city location.

    The silliness comes into play in your choice of weapons. There are at least two new weapons in this game: a pistol that instantly kills almost everything in this game, and a watermelon launcher (seriously?) that almost instantly kills everything in this game. The only deciding factor between these two weapons is one consumes no ammo, while the other only has 100 bullets (total). Although, you could survive with the just the instant-kill gun, as there are only a limited amount of enemies in this game.

    There’s nothing special about the enemies really. They have new skins that are green (or slightly reminiscent to Portal). There are new models (such as a shopping cart and a gingerbread man), and a lot of mapping issues that (as said before), allow you to go places you aren’t supposed to go.
    *End spoilers*

    To sum up, the mod has its problems, but more or less you’re going to be bored enough to try it out regardless, and it’s not that bad.

    Great game!-I haven’t had this much fun with one of these mods for awhile. It has some small flaws but it played with no errors at all and the fighting was well balanced and fun. The melon lauching rocket laucher was fantastic. I spent alot of time just blowing thing up. It dosen’t shoot one at a time but a bunch and they are very effective against anything. Great weapon. The only negative was the ending. It was well, abrupt and could have been much better. Sure hope that was just the start of this.

  16. Mike- Dryn

    Hi guys,

    I’m the creator of this mod, I made it in my first year at university as part of a module – it’s based on my local asda supermarket ^^ I just wanted to try and make a short and sweet little fun mod, and I’m really glad you guys like it! I had no idea this many people had played it, and stumbled across this by accident when trying to dig up some old screenshots for a friend.

    I just want to add that this was something I made entirely by myself over the course of about 12 weeks alongside 3 other modules of equal quantity in work.

    I’m now in my third year, and did continue exploring level design a bit more afterwards; however, I am now focussed on character art – got some stuff on my website at http://www.dryn.interlopers.net

    I really enjoy reading your comments – it’s a heavily flawed mod of course! but where else are you going to blast combines with melons, cans of beans, pizzas and trollies 😛

  17. Mike, thanks for dropping by. You character work is fantastic. I have edited your name in the Basic details section to link to your page.

    I tried this mod,and its really fun,its short but fun,espicially the melon launcher,i just spam fired hundreds of melons at my enemies, it was very fun.

  19. Play It Later

    Darn, I never thought of throwing pizzas. (I think I tend to forget the gravity gun…) I loved the watermelons. At some point, this reminded me a lot of the supermarket map in Duke3D, which I haven’t thought about for 10 years or so…

    There may be all the flaws mentioned above (it would have been nice to get some of the boxes out of my way in the store, but the ones I tried to demolish were indestructible), but it was fun.

    Too short, though. It would be nice if the author would add to it.

  20. bolex

    The mod doesn’t work for me. Crashes at the start followed by this message:
    unable to load manifest file ‘scripts/surfaceproperties_manifest.txt’

    Also in the ‘gameinfo.txt’ file one bracket is missing, it couldn’t be listed in steam.
    If someone can help, than do so please.

    1. Same here. Not listed in Steam until I added the bracket but it doesn’t load up anyhow (on a Mac here). A tad bit gutted 🙁

      1. I sort of fixed the mod by replacing the gameinfo.txt and the bin folder with one of a Source SDK 2013 mod. Obviously the new weapon isn’t useable but atleast it starts up and is playable.

        1. That’s great to hear – can you paste your txt file here please so we can have a bash? Thanks vmuch 🙂

          1. Here you go

            “GameInfo”
            {
            game “Half-Life 2: ASDA”
            title “ASDA”

            {
            SteamAppId 243730 // This sets the app ID in Steam

            //
            // The code that loads this file automatically does a few things here:
            //
            // 1. For each “Game” search path, it adds a “GameBin” path, in \bin
            // 2. For each “Game” search path, it adds another “Game” path in front of it with _ at the end.
            // For example: c:\hl2\cstrike on a french machine would get a c:\hl2\cstrike_french path added to it.
            // 3. For the first “Game” search path, it adds a search path called “MOD”.
            // 4. For the first “Game” search path, it adds a search path called “DEFAULT_WRITE_PATH”.
            //

            //
            // Search paths are relative to the base directory, which is where hl2.exe is found.
            //
            // |gameinfo_path| points at the directory where gameinfo.txt is.
            // We always want to mount that directory relative to gameinfo.txt, so
            // people can mount stuff in c:\mymod, and the main game resources are in
            // someplace like c:\program files\valve\steam\steamapps\half-life 2.
            //
            SearchPaths
            {
            // First, mount all user customizations. This will search for VPKs and subfolders
            // and mount them in alphabetical order. The easiest way to distribute a mod is to
            // pack up the custom content into a VPK. To “install” a mod, just drop it in this
            // folder.
            //

            game+mod episodic/custom/*
            game+mod hl2/custom/*

            // Now search loose files. We’ll set the directory containing the gameinfo.txt file
            // as the first “mod” search path (after any user customizations). This is also the one
            // that’s used when writing to the “mod” path.

            }
            }
            }

            And remember to also replace the binaries for the mod. Go to Your Harddrive/steam/steamapps/common/ Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer/sourcetest/bin

            There you copy the client.dll and server.dll and paste it into the bin folder of the mod itself. Otherwise it won’t start up.

            1. That’s worked and I’ve just begun playing. Thank you so much!!!! 🙂

  21. Think Twice

    Thanks to Koneko (above) i was finally able to play this silly mod but it still didn’t work 100%. For example, I could collect guns but I couldn’t collect ammo. So once I was out, I was out… Also, each Soldier only took one hit to kill. It made for a fun time going around the supermarket though, I felt like the SAS with one tap instant killing lol

    Okay, I couldn’t play this properly so I can only give a rough opinion but this is a fun mod and nothing serious. I’d have loved to grenade / rocket launcher the store but hey, that’s just me. Worth playing once, well, maybe… but I’d think twice!

  22. Maybe?

    It’s okay, combat is a bit unfair. The custom models and textures do look good, map design is meh. There is one part of the map that crashes my game so I had no choice but to do some prop climbing.
