I LOVED this release. It was a simple premise and a very tight production. This is definitely going in the Hall Of Fame later this year.
The mod author decided to limit the choice of weapons and enemies and made the prefect level design to match them.
There are some nice touches with some wall messages and the overall effect is of a professional production.
I found the ending a little difficult until I realized what I needed to do.
MAJOR SPOILER BELOW
The only negative point I can make is that I feel the author should have made it possible for the player to retrace their steps back out of the final pit to get the Auto-turrets.

This reminds me of Rock 24 and Riot Act. Both mods seemed to know exactly what they were trying to do and didn’t get carried away and made a mod that was too big. This is the perfect length for me and I couldn’t wait to start playing again after I had taken a break.
The author definitely needs to make more.
Is it possible to run this mod using the Half-Life 2: Ep2 console instead of copying the Intrusion folder into my SourceMods folder? If so, how?

Anyway, I can’t believe that this mod has only been downloaded around 100 times. Not only should readers download it, they should play it and then comment!
I loved the little touches like the writing on the wall to move the story along and not having to worry about how crappy voiceovers in some mods ruin the experience. The text reminded me of Portal, which was a great thing. Some of the custom graphics were nice and added to the feel of the mod.
I enjoyed the mod til the last sequence. I still haven’t gotten passed it because it is very unforgiving on the hard setting. Way too many spawning enemies. I understand what needs to be done but there’s just too much getting in my way to achieve it. I could be missing something but I don’t see it as I write this. There was one scene also where I wanted to see the new stuff but the spawning enemies made that impossible for me to do. Sometimes it’s just nice to be able to view the level.
As for Philips spoiler, you can actually drop the three Auto-turrets down the hole. They can even fall down, be placed up again and still fire. But they’re pretty worthless down there anyway. There is also an ladder near the pit that can’t be climbed. Was this a bug or done intentionally?
I’m afraid I can’t share the same enthusiasm for this mod.
As far as the positive goes, we have a fairly unique setting. It appears to be some kind of nature laboratory, complete with an arboretum and several examination areas. For most of the map, you wander through the empty facility, reading hints on the walls and seeing the remnants of the research that must have occurred there. It has the same aura Portal had in that respect. There even a room with a holographic Powerpoint presentation.
Where the mod falls apart is in gameplay.
Truth be told, there are a number of things this mod did that really ticked me off.
– The combat isn’t balanced. The entire time, you’re fighting Antlions and you have limited ammo. You don’t have the Gravity Gun (an instant detraction for me) and you are pit against swarms of limitless enemies until you figure out what to do in each room. Compare this to Antlion scenarios in Half-Life 2, where you have limitless SMG ammo, the Gravity Gun, and often some means of preventing Antlion spawns – whether that’s by plugging their burrows or by not treading on sand. Even some of the enemy placement was suspect. There were a couple times I’d come around a corner and get shot by some unseen acid Antlion I would have never anticipated.
– Twice in the mod, the author blocked passageways by placing props in critical spaces. Without the Gravity Gun, you are forced to “push” the objects out of the way yourself, or try jumping and hope the collision will forgive you, all the while taking fire from limitless Antlion hordes. This sucks. Moreover, you can’t even close the doors behind you for some reason. Although the Antlions were never smart enough to follow me through the doors, it still struck me as an odd thing to prevent.
– The final sequence was ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. Now, I will grant that the concept was interesting enough. You have to bring three plugs to their respective outlets on the other side of the room in order to engage the bomb, and then press the button to detonate the bomb. Sounds fun, right? Well, no. As I mentioned, you have no Gravity Gun, so if you get hit, you’re going to drop the plug. But more importantly, you’ve got this insane swarm of Antlions. The area is so thick with Antlions, you can’t even walk. There must have been at least a dozen of them, including the obnoxious acid ones. Don’t even think about bringing those sentry turrets down there to help you, because the Antlions will fly right over and knock them down and before you know it, you’re surrounded once more and unable to get back to the turret. Don’t even think about killing them either, since for every one you kill, another instantly respawns. There is no temporary reprieve. I’m at a loss as to what the gameplay intention was here, but it fails completely. Perhaps I’m doing it wrong, but even if that is the case, the map fails to make clear what the correct way is. Then, on top of that… the ending… well, the most you can say is that there is an ending, since it only serves to demonstrate the futility of your hard work.
As far as non-visual aesthetics, there don’t appear to be any ambient soundscapes, so you are playing in complete silence. You spend a lot of time in ventilation ducts, with misaligned textures and haphazard lighting. The architecture, blocky and overly clean. Not many props either. I realize the author was probably shooting for a somewhat sterile, Portal aesthetic, but I don’t think it was accomplished here.
Overall, I was disappointed. Based on Phillip’s suggestion, I was expecting something quite phenomenal, but this map really didn’t do it for me. Sorry.
I agree completely with Kyouryuu. The author spent time on making the maps look wonderful, but there’s not much time to appreciate it. Infinite enemies with finite ammo is not fun and does not allow for sightseeing.
This is interesting because it’s quite rare to have 4 different recommendation images from readers. Clearly this one is not for everybody and the limited set of enemies and weapons is a double edged sword.
Allow me to briefly digress for a moment. The original design of the current them had all the comments hidden. A reader had to click a javascript link that would then display all the comments. Luke, the design, and I discussed this point a few times but eventually we removed it, partly because linking directly to comments wouldn’t work if this feature was enabled.
The part that was interesting for me is how other people’s reviews affect the reviews received afterwards. I generally try to psot my review at the same time I post the details of the map or mod. I do this because I believe that readers expect at least one review.
I know lots of readers like to read the reviews before they play a map or mod. However, it seems to me that by reading a review you are setting expectation that rarely are met.
I believe it’s possible to enjoy a mod that other people have said is bad but the opposite sometimes isn’t true. It seems to happen the when I enthuse about a map or mod, most readers don’t like it. This could be that my tastes are significantly different from most readers (More on that in a moment) or they have expectation that are hard to meet.
One detailed feature I would love to have on the site is Member profiles. This would allow other readers to see what kind of mods the reviewer likes and perhaps read a description about the member themselves.
The more a visitor reads the reviews the more they understand the likes and dislikes of the different reviews.
Phew, sorry to rant but as I said at the beginning I find this really interesting.
Back to the mod. Although It’s not perfect I honestly felt that most people would enjoy it. This shows me that “most” readers want something with more variety and perhaps more widely performed playtesting.
I fully understand what you mean but sometimes I feel that a good thing. We expect to be able to kill everything and win every situation and it seems to me that sometimes we need to be “told” by the designer that we can’t win this particular battle and must move on.
I want to answer some of the points raised, but I don’t really want to defend the mod, because I know not everybopdy will like it.
Yeah, cared the poo out of me the first time I tried but with the turrets I managed to do it quite easily. I admit that I played on EASY, as I always do but it still wasn’t too hard.

That’s the point I was trying to amke. After I died a few times I realized I needed help and then it occured to me that I could use the turrets. If I could have made my way back up out of the hole I might have down that the first time.
I find it hard to believe you thought they were worthless. I certainly couldn’t have completed the mod without them. But then again I am a pretty bad player. 😉
While it was pretty well done it’s not my type.I like some variety plus I’m not to fond of antlions in the first place.Ammo was well placed with enough to get you through everything upto the end.The ending was a killer even with turrets because of the respawn rate.

This mod is atmospheric if anything, using a variety of areas including forest, laboratory, and desert (Given it was limited due to the short size of the mod: 1 map). Think of it like Jurassic Park, but with antlions.
Now the main problem I had with this mod is that I HATE ANTLIONS! Not like you’re supposed to ‘like” an enemy, but the fact that they come at you in clusters to beat you to death leaves very little room to try to actually fight them. So you’ll be spending most of the time running away from the giant buggers, which is unfortunate because it meant the only thing I could fully explore was any hall where the antlions were too dumb to follow me through (and texture issues in vents). Needless to say, these were not the atmospheric areas that I credit in the mod.
Along with exploring and running away from said pretty environments, you’re on an implied mission to find a girl and meet up with her (but more along the lines of Gordon’s relation with the GMan than an actual date.) Your path to finding her consists of multiple messages she leaves behind for you to follow. These scribbled messages on the wall are similar to the ones in hidden areas in Portal, but don’t really add much to the plot or explain what you’re supposed to do (other than the one at the end).
On an interesting note, if you speedrun fast enough out of the first room you’re in, you can watch her die from antlions (and then take her shotgun).

The final part of this map would probably have to be the most frustrating annoyace of the map. First of all, because I was lost and trying to use the ladders in the desert area, only to find that they have no purpose and you can walk right through them. It’s not really frustrating to find out that I wasn’t supposed to use the ladders; it was more frustrating that I had to fight through a horde of respawning antlions while trying to pile barrels and climb over them to find that I wasn’t supposed to use the ladders.
The more annoying part would be the end battle, where you have to put 3 plugs into a bomb and then pull a switch to blow it. There are 3 friendly turrets beforehand that you have the choice to leave behind. However, I’ll put it this way: if you don’t take all 3 turrets with you, you are screwed. With the constant respawning of acid and regular antlions (about 8 each), constantly batting the plug out of your hand every time you go to carry them, you NEED something to distract them. I managed to get one plug across without the turrets, and then the antlions formed a massive crowd around the plugs, the healthkits, the armor, and the shotgun ammo, leaving me with no chance of finishing.

All in all, the mod was not bad, but that part took the cake in difficulty (especially without the forementioned). Still, every mod seems to have its share of really negative spots, and this one is at least not bad and easy to adjust from the mapper’s perspective.
There’s no real reason to go out to avoid this mod, but there’s no extremely special moment that makes it memorable, I’m afraid…

I only made it past the lobby area & into the last 2 two rooms where the armor charger & then the room with the vent which seemed to lead nowhere anyone know where I continue on?

I am baffled by some of the comments…nothing new there then…I found this map a challenge but quite enjoyed it, and will give it another go before too long…However, am I dreaming or don’t you just extract the whole thing to your Sourcemods folder and restart Steam? That’s what I did & it’s not only there, but playable.Mind you I do have a fully authentic Episode 2, maybe that’s it?I for one hope we get more from the author! Please…!I so hate the new generation of Acid Antlions though…….Youch….
I liked it also but as you said I don’t like antlions as the only enemy so I said play it later.That doesn’t mean it’s bad just if you don’t like antlions you may want to put it on the back burner so to speak.
Screenshot 22 & 23 the last labatory room with the glowworm on the table theirs a steel table & a vent shaft but I saw no other way to go forward.
Way too funny. Great time spent with good maps and terror from antlions. The criptic messages are a great touch, proven already in Portal and as it seems a great deal part of Left 4 Dead’s story. A nice and clean way to entartain and engage the player. A great end 🙂
I nearly gave it an “Avoid It”, but the level design and creativity mean that would be unfair. Almost as unfair as the ending of this mod! I couldn’t finish it: I even tried God Mode but the antlions kept knocking the plugs out of my hands. On one try one of the plugs got knocked so that it was inside the bomb, so I couldn’t pick it up again. If we could block the spawn points, or maybe kill a finite number of antlions, and then arm the bomb, then fine, but as it is it is simply frustrating. I do hope the author makes more mods, because this is clearly very talented work – but next time without infinite enemies!

The end is quite manageable, even in skill “3′, if you keep moving the 3 turrets, closer to the bomb detonator. With all 3 turrets just about even with the detonator, they all stay in place and it makes it much easier to plug in the bomb. They each must be moved a little at a time to keep all 3 firing at the antlions.
While it has its faults, this mod definitely gets a place on my list of highlights. The level design overall is good and the setting is imaginative and quite unique, which is refreshing and makes this stand out among the hundreds of other maps and mods set in samey warehouses and bland apartment blocks. The mysterious survivor’s writing on the wall is a nice touch (and yes, reminiscent of Portal), as are the details like the holographic presentation in one of the rooms.On the final fight: Anon above me is correct. The woman who wrote on the wall gives good advice, you have to rely on the turrets. You have to drop the turrets into the pit and then quickly set them up. I doubt you can before the Antlions get there, so do what I did and walk around carrying one of the turrets in front so it can mow down some of the Antlions, wait for the right time to drop it and finish the rest with your shotgun, and set up the turrets before the next wave gets there. With three turrets up and firing, the Antlions can’t penetrate your perimeter. Then you have to gradually move the turrets up the tunnel. Obviously, the terrain being as rough as it is, it’s challenging to find good spots to place the turrets where they won’t fall over, but I wouldn’t say it’s unreasonably difficult. Once I got them down there and set up, gradually moving the line of turrets down the tunnel to the end was easy enough. And for all the frustration of not knowing what to do at first, I admit I felt pretty elated when I finally succeeded.That said, the mod — particularly the ending — could have been done better. I personally didn’t think to take the turrets with me at first (because I didn’t know what kind of threat I was facing), and since there’s apparently no way out of the pit once you go in, the only way to go back to get the turrets is to load a previously saved game. That’s just bad design. Also, I believe there should have been more room to maneuver at the base of the pit to allow players a better chance to get out of the melee long enough to kill the first group of Antlions and set up their turrets to deal with the next wave.A few more nitpicks:
* I encountered a bug on my second playthrough in that the woman who walks past the room you start in was still there when I left the room, and just stood there after fighting the antlions that appeared. Given that she had the same model as the woman you find at the end, it would seem that she was meant to disappear after walking past your door, but didn’t.
* There should have been a little bit (not much, just a little) more ammo for the pistol to give the player an option for dealing with acid antlions at a distance, which might have been useful at the end.
* The doors can’t be closed once opened. There’s no reason why not and it could be useful, so it’s a minor irritation.
All that said, this mod is good — it’s not great, and it’s certainly not perfect, but it *is* good — and I definitely recommend it. Honestly, I don’t understand why this mod is being judged as harshly as it is when I think of the many worse mods out there. The flaws in Intrusion’s gameplay design are not as bad as what I’ve seen in quite a few other highly rated mods (like Coastline to Atmosphere, for one, which is RIFE with bad design but gets 10/10 scores from the mindless droves regardless), and its atmosphere and unique setting also help set this apart. 4/5 stars from me.
I enjoyed the map and challenges until where the turrets are dropped into the pit. The endless stream of antlions that easily knocked over the turrets took all the fun away. After a million reloads, I still had trouble inching the turrets towards the detonator – each time being totally overwhelmed with antlions and their deadly spit. So, I turned on the notarget cheat and still had my hands full. The plugs were always knocked out of my hands and then I had an almost impossible task of picking them up amongst the antlion hoard. I finally managed to get the bomb detonated. Let me tell you… the ending really sucked. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it! The last part of this map left me feeling totally helpless and ruined the whole experience. Sorry, but that’s the way I see it.
Woman! What woman? I didn’t see no woman.
This mod was good. Died a lot til I change from regular to easy. The trick of not losing the plug is to avoid getting bump. So you have to run zig-zag til you get close to plug it in.
Granted the ending was a bummer.
I don’t understand why people always comparing these mods to Half-Life games. These are MODS people,the mods are based on the games. So you are not going to get the same weapons or enemies.

You just DON’t HAVE TO kill evey antlion. That’s all.
The shotgun is only there to allow you to get past rooms easier. I’m quite sure it could be done without any weapon.That said, I love how this mod is different. In each “battle”, you know from the beginning that you are screwed… Unless you run away. It feels like you can’t really do anything.The last battle looks a lot like a last chance to do something useful, because you are doomed anyway. You risk your life to try to save others.And the ending is marvelous. I’ve got to love this feeling of “baaaaah, I didn’t do anything after all. All this was worthless.”
I recommand playing this mod if you aren’t frustrated by losing. Some of the people above me don’t seem to like that 😀
I’m baffled by the high ratings, although I note there are lots of poor ratings too, like mine. I don’t like play against ‘the Spawn” until you die maps, just amateurish to me. Much of the mod was very good and then the last (I assume it is) sequence buries it. This type of so-called “action” gets slammed in the ratings with other maps.
It’s been awhile since I played this, so there are some things I can’t comment on.
I have to give this a Maybe because I did NOT have fun playing this (though I think it’s well made and good enough to play again sometime). I can see that some people would really like it, though. There’s a limited amount of ammo and health, and antlions are almost constantly attacking you.
I accidentally managed to turn the triggering off for the antlions coming out of the hole. (I assume you’re supposed to be able to do that.)
[spoiler]Then I dropped the turrets in the hole. I finally turned on god mode, but now that I’ve been through it I think I could at least get the turrets up to the ammo crate without it. Maybe. I’m not sure I could plug in the generator without cheating, though.[/spoiler]
Why all the negativity? This map brings killing antlions to a new level, and a good one at that. I’ve really enjoyed myself playing this mod. I never did like fighting antlions in the original game, but there was something different in this, something that makes shooting countless amounts of insects with the 12-gauge so very exciting. I have to disagree with statements regarding the scarcity ammo and teeming amounts of antlion spawns.
(As when I was playing on Normal difficulty,) The amount of ammo and health kits lying around is rather plentiful, more than the player requires, with there being hardly anything to shoot at. I myself had no problems at all facing the handful (don’t they all stop spawning after awhile at this point of the map?) of antlions that pop out here and there.
[spoiler]The last bit with the turrets and the bomb is a rather nice touch, the objective much easier than it looks with the turrets around to handle the infinite antlion respawns. Though frustrating to face endless amounts of enemies, it’s quite understandable as this is the final “boss” battle. Placing all 3 turrets at the cave mouth to shoot the bugs as they spawn made the job much easier.[/spoiler]
Long comment short; IMO, this is one of those short-but-sweet mods that I would strongly recommend playing it ASAP.
I do not like losing. Not too fond of antlions either. That said, I thoroughly it enjoyed until the final battle.
I finished it but with relief and not jubilation. I started, I played, I finished – dead – no sense of achievement.
If you do not mind going in to a battle knowing you’re going to lose, it’s PIN.
I do mind so three stars for an otherwise excellent mod.

An arena type mod is not what I enjoy. If you like that sort of thing, this is your map.

Well here we have as Phillip said a great background story, not necesarly told directly (go find it yourself) so that’s cool and the ennemys and the weapons just fit perfectly and lovley for the environment this mod reach.
So is a PN for sure, so go and won’t regret it, maybe for me is not a PF because I like longer and more special mods.
The end is kind of hectic but rewarding as well.
I enjoyed this level. It looks very good visually and has nice architecture. The setting is also unique, and the writing on the walls is kind of interesting. I’m one of the people who likes fighting antlions, but with all the hordes, I honestly kind of wish there was something apart from the shotgun. I like how many rooms there are that you do not need to visit to beat the level, but provide you with some extra supplies. It makes exploration more rewarding (although there’s a bit too much shotgun ammo, I never felt like I was in too much danger). I didn’t like the finale, that was ludicrous. The sentries constantly got knocked down so that wasn’t any help. I just had to carry the cords hoping I would not die. However, I think the rest of the level is pretty fun and do recommend you play it at some point.

I really like this quirky mod. I must admit to not being a fan of maps with antlions. They’re usually respawning forever and very annoying, but, this was great. There is a set amount throughout so this doesn’t hamper the explorational elements at all. The end battle is poorly done I thought and is disappointing compared to everything prior… I probably would have rated higher ignoring the arena battle. Not my cuppa T.

While killing every antlions are optional, it is quite fun and satisfying to blow them up with a shotgun. But I have issues in this mod. First off is the technical issues. For some odd reason, I couldn’t see my HUD except the crosshair. So when it comes to watching my health, I have to rely on the crosshair itself. I couldn’t see the aux power and the flashlight power either. Next is the antlion workers. Normally they spit acid at you but for some reason, they just run around harmlessly waiting for you to kill them. I’m not sure if that is intentional because if not, it’s a technical issue because they’re supposed to spit acid. Now that I’ve covered up the technical issues, let’s talk about the content of the game starting with the gameplay. It offers nothing but run and gun against a swarm of antlions and that’s basically it. I don’t like the ending where it is an anti-climactic one. I was expecting a boss battle though, it would’ve been a good way to conclude the mod. For the map design, it doesn’t appeal that much, it’s bland.
Now to be honest, I would’ve give this an “Avoid it” rating because of the ending . It’s not worth playing through the end.

I think the idea behind how it was think and build was great, A labotary complex were things got wrong, but the atmosphere of the complex through the way it was build missed something to make it really great (more details labs, interconnection with survivor, tense music…) neverteless I enjoy playing it and certainly recommand it 🙂
