  1. Maybe?

It’s a great idea to add all those guildhall release Phillip… Thanks 😉

It was another short but sweet release lot’s of well designed place even if we can consider that it dicrease regarding the starting area, the progression is obvious and doesn’t real be oriented on puzzle it also end abruptly

btw perhaps you should also add the rating sytem?

    This review contains spoilers!

This is another Guildhall map and these deserve some kind of disclaimer. They weren’t really built for release in the same way other maps and mods are. They seem to be more demonstration of particular abilities. That said, if a map is available on the net then it should be prepared to be critiqued.

This map has a simple and easy-to-achieve objective; reach the Doctor being held by the Combine. It will probably take you about 5 minutes of gameplay and there are few surprises.

From a technical viewpoint this map contains a few errors but they only interfered with my playing enjoyment once.

The map opens with the playing starting in a boat shed that is uspicously quite far away from the water! There a nice touch with the headcrabs but they pose little trouble.

I felt that the beach area was wasted because you need to access a pipe and this can be done in seconds. I believe it would have been better to have placed the pipe much further away from the bot shed and give the player some gameplay in between.

Once into the pipe you are on a simple linear path. Regular readers will know that I generally like linear so that’s fine.

The problem was the placement of the Zombies. It was just too obvious; right around the corner.

Once inside the building things improve with a nice hollowed-out area that should have provided a much stiff challenge.

That leaves just one last room to reach the Doc. Again more enemies would have been better.

I’m torn between a Consider It and an Avoid It recommendation because for seasoned players there is little to hold their attention and much to complain about.

I finally chose the Consider It because It’s easy to find fault in things, especially after playing great mods but unless you have decided only to play the large, popular mod then you should view the screenshots and decide if you want to play something new for 5 minutes.

  3. btw perhaps you should also add the rating sytem?

Whoops! Added, along with some installation instructions.

I haven’t played the mod yet, but I’m guessing that is because of the Combine draining the Earth’s water. All the water levels in Half-Life 2 are unnaturally low too.

You are absolutely correct and that would also explain the reason for the pipe.

    Silly me!

  6. Maybe?

I’m a bit unsure what to say about this map. On one hand it’s got some obvious flaws (it’s very short, it’s pretty dull and there are some design errors in a few places) but on the other hand it’s showing potential and it’s obvious that the author knows how to use some of the intermediate features of Hammer fairly well.

I’ll go back and explain some of those points now. The map took me about 10 minutes to complete (and that was after exploring every nook and cranny and even backtracking for some health). There was little in the way of action as the gunfights were all over pretty quick and somewhat anticlimactic. Mild SPOILER in the following sentences: the soldiers that dropped through the ceiling took me completely by surprise as it all happened completely silently. They proceeded to rape me with their shotguns within several seconds and left me confused as to where they had suddenly come from.

As for the errors, they were minor and in no way affected the gameplay but they WERE present so I feel I should mention them. The beach featured several floating rocks near the opposite end to the pipe. Also the water room had a gap along one side where the water didn’t meet the wall (and didn’t that room seem to fill up rather quickly?). Also the sea had invisible barriers preventing me from swimming too far. This can be addressed with a wider area and a func_watery_death brush entity which introduces the attacking leeches seen in HL2. As I said, these were all very minor flaws but contributed to a negative opinion of this map.

All in all it’s not a BAD map as such, just not exactly outstanding. Personally I feel it served an excellent purpose for allowing the author to hone their skills and get familiar with Hammer but doesn’t really serve much purpose (as far as fun goes) for anyone else.

  7. Maybe?

Ok looking. Not very eventful. Unpolished. I got trapped in the water trying to get the ammo, the button made a noise but wasn’t useful to get out. Maybe one play through.

  8. Maybe?

I’m unsure whether this was for a competition called “Guildhall”, but I’ll rate it as any other map I have played.

    Score Sheet

Usage of space and world brushes: 3/10
It felt very empty and blocky. The water puzzle was probably the only true puzzle. Felt rushed or very unpolished.

    Visuals 2/10
Visuals were lackluster at best, I really felt like more could be done to fix cubemaps. It’s flat lighting and overall lack of variance really felt off-putting.

    Gameplay: 2/10
Gameplay is bare minimum at best. Find and “secure” the doctor and kill like 2 CP and a few headcrabs.

    Final Score: 7/30 – 23%

Final Comments: Play it if you wan to because it’s a very short mod. It’s not gonna take too much out of your day to play it at least once.
