This is quite a good little mod and shows some nice attention to detail. You play as a Metrocop whose partner blames you for not getting information from a rebel women. He quickly turnms on you and that’s just the start of your bad day! You need to make your way through a linear base (I only found one alternative route during the whole mod). That’s not to say it’s a bad thing but some players enjoy more freedomn than others.
By defending yourself you free four other rebels and they do their best to assist you. The voice acting is about the same as most mods nowadays but the volume is a little low. Twice during the mod I had to start from a previous save just to ensure I heard what was said. Smarter players probably won’t need the help but I like to hear what they said.
The A.I. of both the Combine and squad leaves a lot to be desired but that’s obviously not the author’s complete fault.
There are a couple of nice areas that let your imagination run and wonder what’s behind the gates etc. I particualrly liked the area with the snipers, although it needs more work to be truly memorable. In fact it was too easy to pass.
The ending is good strange. There is a particualr part that I really liked but felt that it could have been put to better use. The credits were pretty cooll too.
I’m unclear whether the slowing down I had in certain areas is the fault of my PC/HL2 installation or the mod itself. Most probably my PC/installation
Negatives
– No surprises.
– Combine could have been better placed, at least not always in groups
– Sniper area under-developed
Positives
– Plenty of detail
– Attempt at telling a simple story.
– Nice flow of gameplay
– Explosion sequence
Conclusion
A good little mod that attempts to tell a story. With some slight changes I think it could be improved but that’s just my opinion. I would definitely like to see more from the author.
Five Word Review
(What’s This?)
Not bad, could do better.
I rate this mod very highly. Maybe it just suits my style of play, but I got a lot of fun out of it. It started out fairly pedestrian then threw a few curve balls. It isn’t essential that the rebels survive so I let them die quite quickly and went it alone. Small, but nicely proportioned. I gave it 5 headcrabs as there isn’t a 4.5.
Was too short….wanted more! For us that are playing on inferior systems, the large maps occasionally crash and take too long to load. I think 2-3 maps instead of one would have worked better.
Agreed on the sniper scene. I went back in with GOD mode just to see if there was anything fun to do there. Even placing the snipers in windows to make them grenade bait would have been better.
4 headcrabs….4 1/2 if I could slice one.
I liked several things about this mod.
The architecture of the mod was pretty good in places, but very bland in others. The same goes for the texturing. In some places it was great, but in others I was not as impressed. One part in particular had a spiral staircase which looked like the author had spent no time aligning the textures up correctly. This put me off a bit.
The lighting was certainly good enough — but it could have been better!
This mod has character. The little cutscenes, especially the ones at the start and end, are well done and raised a smile. I thought the voice acting was as good as could be expected, and I found it loud enough to hear clearly at all times.
Some of the setups are nice. Although the 3 snipers didn’t really do much for me, the way that the soldiers blow holes in the walls just after you got past them, I thought that was really well done.
The combat was fairly intense, and my party did not last long. It was the enemy grenades that mainly took them out. I also died a few times. I’d say the difficulty was fine, but I imagine that actually keeping the squad alive could be pretty tricky, if you actually tried to.
On my first attempt at the ending bit, I ran past the APC’s and saw enemy soldiers spawn right in front of me, which killed the atmosphere just a little.
Another thing I noticed was that the performance was a bit strange. My FPS counter was fluctuating wildly all the time, it was never steady. At some points, this led to a feeling of jerkiness even though it didn’t actually get jerky.
It was too short. This is only a bad thing if the author doesn’t make a sequel, though. So make a sequel now. Thanks. 😀
Definately worth half an hour of anyone’s time!
Short but sweet sp-mod its all about easy puzzles & meduim combat with some nice touches like the near end battle when the walls were blown-in I thought was awesome.
There was never a real shortage on supplies & health kits although the only part I didnt like & this comes from the Original game was the floor turrets even this one down the long hall was tough to knock out.
Ending was ok a bit bleak guess combine dont usually get happy endings well neither does Gordon lol.
Overall 90%
BTW the sniper area you blow up all explosive barrels so the snipers dont get any ideas then you run for the open box car crates for cover you find 1 that has the Crossbow inside which you use on the snipers as well as your hand grenades come in handy. Problem Solved.
Those poor prisoners never stood a chance with me! I was doing pretty well until the combine started grenading constantly. 🙁
Here we have some really nice mapping and I liked the architecture and “feel” of the layout. There were some very intense fight sequences but I felt they were just clumped together for the sake of getting your arse kicked. No real puzzles which was a shame. Just a straight shooter mod if that’s your cup of tea. Also, I’m not quite sure what happened to the snipers since it all happened so fast but I’m glad they bit the dust.
I would give this a “PLAY IT NOW” recommendation but due to the sole fact of the opening sequence and how the authors chose to take a very sexist and extremely low route in their wording, I give it an
along with a rating of ….. oh, say … 1
and I REALLY don’t want to hear any lip about it.
Then don’t make it so dramatic…
*Spoilers Aplenty*
Anyways, going from what Alyria said, I didn’t particularly like the introductory sequence, not because it was sexist, but because it was all in all in bad taste. Valve went through a lot of effort to display the ruthless nature of the Combine with as few swear words as possible, and being called a naughty term right at the beginning is not the nicest way to introduce you to a game. I had to promptly exit because I had company over the first time I loaded it up (also because general voice acting tends to erk me in negative ways).
Going from there, I quickly put the Gordan Freeman smack-down on the guy (mostly out of instinct) as he was going to make the interrogation process difficult if he killed the rebel “whore” (not my words). This was definately not to be a hero of any sort, as I would’ve probably reloaded the game and seen if I could do the same with the rebel trapped in the incubation tube (as I thought I was supposed to). It was then that she had a sudden heart attack and died (no, I’m not joking. If I wasn’t such an active participant right at the beginning, I probably would’ve seen the scene as it was intended… sorry).
After that, the game wasn’t all that TERRIBLE (in fact, it was very challenging). Much like Alyia’s experience, the prisoners really stood no chance in this map, and with them dead, it makes you wonder about the purpose of continuing on, considering it was your sudden role to break them free.
Complaining more about the plot, I really wonder why so many mods talk about the Combine soldiers being “programmed” or “brain-washed” into fighting against the rebels. I never saw that in the actual Half-life 2 game. I think somewhere along the line, somebody mistook the soldiers for the Stalkers in that game.
And then I wonder to myself how this particular simulation is supposed to test your loyalty to the Combine. You’re locked in a room with a metrocop, who suddenly decides to beat the crap out of you to cover up for killing a prisoner. If you kill him, the entire Combine army suddenly goes against you. So what are you, the player, supposed to do? Just take the beating? How does you getting killed show your loyalty?
Somehow, I know I’ve gone too far in analyzing the plot, and I should stop…
*End spoiler*
The mod itself is pretty fun. Very challenging if you want to keep your squadmates alive (even if you don’t care, it’s pretty hard). The only armor I’ve come across was in the stun batons, so that’s part of the challenge (no armor). Might want to also consider that this mod only has one level, and that the screenshots provided here give away a LOT of that map.
For the above reasons,
I agree and menat to mention it in my my mini review.
Good point, although I assumed the main objective was for the player to actually escape rather than save the prisoners.
I like takings creenshots and make no apology for that. I believe they are small enough to ignore if a reader wants to.
The download link is above the images, so there is no need for a reader to view them if they don’t want to.
Yes Phillip provides the whole media coverage on these mods with the screenshots no wrong in that & of taking so many screenshots well thats because hes enjoying the mod & what it has to offer everything is optional to view.
Yes the opening sequence was rude but this game is Mature rated but on the otherhand if they release this mod again maybe theyl edit out the unesscary swear words.
Big disappointment is almost all the 1st person shooters the NPCs are killed very uselessly off even before you meet them face to face (audio message PDAs) this one is no different tho they shouldve had more value on them than Just you the Player being the only One out Alive. Even the end video of Episode 1 ticked me off I really thought they were gonna kill Alyx Vance just because they can :((
Pretty average really if you ask me. Underwhelming level design, doesn’t even feel like you’re a cop; HEV suit in first person view?, voice acting is quite neat but I did have trouble hearing what the hell they said; no subtitles either, not much of a story and way too short.
Of course there are a few cool set pieces like the slo-mo sequence.
Naaa, try it out only if you’re bored. Nothing more.
It was unfair to play this after finishing Citizen as it suffered deeply by comparison. I consider it run-of-the-mill at best with not much to recommend it other than it gives me another opportunity to encourage mod developers regardless of the criticism their early mods might receive. I do consider the opening verbage as totally unnecessary and adds nothing of value to the mod.
Well good for you, aren’t you ‘special” then. You ARE going to hear lip about it, and that starts now.
You are playing a game someone made (not me, and I don’t know the makers). That game is free. You have paid no money for it. In my opinion, your individual biases about life have no place in this forum, as this is not a soapbox for spreading your gospel. I find it very rude you have chosen to use this place in that manner, as it can only lead to everybody using it for their personal grievances and viewpoints, and then the place gets totally out of control unless Phillip stops it.
As the quote in the old movie goes “I’d mad as h##l and I’m not going to take it any more”. Your “song” has grown old, very old. As a result, the only thing it accomplishes is to make people angry about YOUR overly sexist opinions, which of course brings out escalating push back against it and/or makes people form negative opinions where there were none before. Like this post.
You are accomplishing exactly the opposite of what you thought you were.
I can’t help thinking these exchanges may be getting out of hand. Doug, I see what you’re saying, but I suspect Alyria’s comments were kinda tongue-in-cheek. You know whow you can say something sharp but soften it with a wry smile? The review she gave the mod was fair, I thought, even if her appreciation of the mod was not the same as mine (the whole point of a comments system, surely?). But yes, saying AVOID IT was probably a tad unfair to the modder.
I, for one, dislike games — full-price or mods — that dish out bad language and I’d have been embarrassed had my young daughter, or indeed my wife, been in the room when I played the opening sequence of Resistor and heard the dialogue. As I was alone, I winced, then carried on and forgot about it.
Maybe this topic is a debate for further discussion elsewhere, maybe the PP forum? But please, don’t lets get into a spat over it here.
I didn’t like this mod either! and agree with Goddess, now I’m not a prude and at 61 I’ve seen allot of trash! I started this mod stopped and erased it! So if violence tword women and kids is enjoyable to some, well —! The Goddess has a right to voice her opinion like any one else and not get flammed! I also didn’t like GTA, and took my “boughten” cd’s and dropped them in my shredder, so I suppose I can get critisised for that — oh well! Sorry Phillip for getting off track!! So I will say
Hang on…are we all talking about the same lines of dialogue here? The mod begins with (I think) a combine talking to another combine: “Where have you been asshole, I’ve been waiting for you. Now pick up the crowbar and let’s make this bitch talk.” (*whack* woman dies) “Shit. That was your fault!”
Okay, not exactly Shakespeare, and not dialogue out of the HL universe even. But c’mon, it isn’t fair for people to say AVOID IT! on those grounds. I don’t recall Adam Foster’s MINERVA attracting this sort of negative attention and AVOID IT!s, even though that mod contained the f-word. As for violence to women, this is a dystopian future the player is immersing him/herself into: what do you think happens to captured rebels in the HL Universe? Women died in HL2, I can assure you.
A lot of people will scroll down this list of comments, not bothering to read the actual comments but counting the pluses and minuses. All these minuses are going to put people off trying what is a competent and enjoyable mod.
Bah, the PP censor went to work on my post above. Which is fine except I can’t help thinking a lot of people will insert stronger words than the actual ones being blanked out! So can I just clarify that the blanked words are all words I’ve heard in PG-rated movies. And that, I reckon, puts this whole argument into some sort of context.
MikeS, he also called her a whore which is pretty offensive too. Personally, I don’t find that kind of language offensive when it’s used well but given the rest of the dialogue and general quality of this mod it didn’t exactly help matters. If I hadn’t read the description I wouldn’t have even been aware that I was a cop. That valuable dialogue could have been used for more productive things.
Also, with regards to the comment about Minerva, the rest of Minerva’s dialogue was extremely well-written and expletives were used sparingly. This mod seemed to chuck it in for the sake of it. I know it’s a dystopian setting but so was HL2 and they managed to convey the atmosphere well enough without using that kind of language.
On to the rest of the mod:
The levels were bland and often badly designed. There were often objects obscuring my shot of the enemy, whilst somehow preventing me from taking adequate cover.
The allies were useless as they first got stuck behind two identical puzzles (“Hey, go and open this gate for us! Now this one! Never mind that we were your enemies 2 minutes ago!”) and then proceeded to ALL get killed by a single grenade in a narrow corridor.
The fight with the Combine Elite was insanely hard as there was (again) no cover and they could somehow shoot through the APCs! Then it all ended as quickly as it started.
I didn’t really have any fun with this mod.
I do believe in all of the HL1/HL2 series, (I do have ’em all)The language I can can deal with, but it’s a male that gets smacked around and not a woman, and if they do it’s not openly protrayed like this! Amen!
Not great but not bad.Good for a laugh at times.
I am entitled to my personal opinions and will voice them however I please without being vulgar or rude regardless of your feelings dougjp. I could go on a rant on why that opening sequence bothered me but any intelligent grown man would already know.
Yes, part of my initial review/comment was tongue in cheek which I do sometimes, but I wouldn’t change my rating for anything in this world.
And just so you know, the only person on a “soapbox” rant here was you.
Thanks to all the true “gents” who posted in my aid which is why I stay here at PP and value them so much. If you have anything further to say about it dougjp, take it up with Phillip.
One of the reasons he wanted me to stay on here at PP and asked me to be a team member is because it somehow brings some equality to the site and a different point of view which he mostly appreciates.
Not bad… The design is ok, the gameplay feels neat…
The first time I tried running this map Steam decided to install the SDK and everything went screwy making all Steam games pretty unusable for the rest of the evening. I left it overnight and by this morning Steam had recovered.
I didn’t get to hear any of the language at the beginning as I started swinging my crowbar from the get go but what dialogue I did hear was far from the best I’ve ever heard.
I’ve never been a fan of guiding NPCs around as they always get in the way when you get into a shoot-out and these were no exception. In the end I was quite glad when they were all dead.
The mapping was fine and the gameplay had a couple of neat bits but just as many annoying bits. If the author went over it and refined it a little then I might have given it a higher recommendation but in its current form I can only give it a
What a lot of controversial posts….
I seem to remember we had a discussion a bit ago about “mature content” and uber-violence, against women and children, and it would seem that this mod has got some hackles up….
Will DL now and have an open-minded look.
The opening sequence is a matter of seconds, it may well offend some, but as has been pointed out it is set in some nightmarish dystopian future, and the combine was hardly going to ask the prisoner if she’d like a nice cup of tea….
The rest of it was extremely playable and well thought out. I’ve rated it 4 and will go back and give it another run through to see if I missed anything.
I happily give it a
Way too much lip here about the opening, political correctness, the plot, comparisons to major mods & original HL2 etc. Get over it; it’s just a fun short little mod. Play it and have fun.
I enjoyed this short but action packed single map mod. I experence no problems running wise and considered the end encounter in the underground car park well worth playing through a few time. Not a classic but well worth a 20 minute play.
With reference to the opening scene much commented on above. Yes, you could say that it was pointless but I did not think for a minute it was sexist, just made me feel ‘lets get those bastard Combine” and I thinks that’s the reaction maybe the author was aiming for.
The mod starts with a prison break, yea another prison break but don’t be misled; this is not another Nova Prospekt cellblock level. Instead you fight your way with the help of the rebel squad who have escaped with you, through a maze of underground concrete bunkers, passageways, store rooms and control rooms until the Combine unleashes its elite amidst the final setting of this underground complex, then and only then do you glimpse the light of day.
Your escape is faulted time and time again by the Combine with support in the form of turret guns and armed vehicles; I am at a loss to remember any other foe and can’t recall a single headcrab, zombie or alien form anywhere within the mod.
The rebel squad is no more then a token forces who interact well with the initial escape but then crumble at the first Combine engagement. Taking lots of damage, I protected them during a repeat play through of the first encounter only to find that they total succumbed again with the next onslaught. To be honest I would sooner progress without the help or hindrance of a squad and feel sure that the mod was designed this way to kill them off quickly, trying to negotiate a squad within confined surroundings in my opinion is one of the less enjoyable aspects of HL2.
The environment settings as you can imagine are limited with this being totally an underground affair of concrete floors, walls and ceiling throughout, so not too much to be said about textures. However, you never feel restricted or penned-in by the surroundings, each area being adequately furnished with the appropriate machinery, equipment or hardware. The Combine encounters alone will keep your mind well away from the pros and cons of your surroundings, and while the design and content never reaches the top of the quality rankings, they are nevertheless all very fitting to the story and action within.
Without a doubt the strength of the mod is the staging of the Combine shoot-outs which range from mass frontal attacks, firefights against tough and cancealed troops, then finally to the superbly mapped pitch battle which is the closing sequence. Having made my way to the final encounter, I found this to be one of the best constructed and rewarding Combine show-downs experience within any HL2 mod, one that draws the player deeper and deeper into the fray. I will take great care not to give spoilers at this point, only to add that I played through this sequence about 6 times, each time varying my approach which resulted in prolonged fun and enjoyment before disappearing into the light.
I didn’t experience any ingame concerns with only the map loading at the beginning of the game giving a problem, this needed to be loaded through the console, i.e. it would not load from the new game screen. There is no real puzzle solving element or indeed little else that detracts from the simplistic plot involving a fight to freedom against Combine troops.
Negative Points
Nothing in the way of new stuff
Limited use of HL2 cast and content
Single environment setting
Positive Points
A complete game with a story
Plenty of action
A great closing Combine sequence
Conclusion
Whilst this is no classic and won’t rank high in any ones top twenty, this mod is well worth a play through. it’s always easy to be negative with these reviews and I could dwell and be critical of some aspects, these would be what the mod lacks in terms of more varied gameplay and settings. What this mod does have is a nice balance between design and action that fits the story comfortably within the time duration of the game.
How refreshing to play a complete game instead of yet another “part one” of something that will never be completed. In some ways this is the ideal mod for those that don’t like short and pointless games, as well as those that get easily bored and lose interest with long and drawn out affairs. This medium length mod achieves the right balance between longevity and content making it fun to play, so go play it now.
Didn’t like it. No puzzles, no real challege and lousy language. This is a mess and it may be a good training mod for it’s makers, but they should have gone through this alot more to improve the maps and make it more challenging before releasing it. I’d say skip it!
Just got through playing. It was short and sweet. No problems tech. wise. Didn’t pay attention to the language, blew it off as it was not clear and loud enough . The squad is a pain in the neck. Always getting in the way. They follow you around like a lost puppy, but when the bullets start flying they don’t follow you and end up getting killed. lol.
Give it a run through. I liked the story, graphics, and quality of the work done to produce it. Look forward to playing more of Jay The Ham’s mods.

I feel like I’ve played a different version of this. It’s ok. Bland maps. Packs of combine. Worth one play through.
