In Socialist Tension, you are in the role of a Contract killer, who was sent to City 17 for his next assignment. His client, one of the citizens of City 17 wants you to assassinate Dr. Breen and put an end to his domination. But he doesn’t know that the “death” of Dr. Breen will lead to tragic consequences and thus your only hope is to get out of City 17 as soon as fast.

I’ve just played this mini-mod and was pleasantly surprised. It’s a slow starter and I usually get bored quite quickly and stop but this time I decided to continue and I’m glad I did.
There are a few nice situations and a few areas reminiscent of Black Mesa. The ending is excellent and cleverly created. I recommend you download this if you want 15 minutes of balanced gameplay, with interesting architecture. Don’t expect Combine fragfests because you won’t find them.
In a very unusual move I’m probably going to play this on the hard level to see what happens. I’m confident of getting to the end section but doubt I’ll get past it. Can you?
I liked it too, however stuck underground.. 🙁 Any suggestions?

Thanks Phillip. I’m underground, after the sewer area where the 2 grunts were on a small platform. Went up the ladder and along to an area with two large round concrete structures against a wall, locked doors on either end. The door by the sign “danger crane overhead” has noise coming from the other side but it doesn’t open.
Okay, I know where you are. The door with the noise opens towards you. Try standing a little further away and opening it. I remember being stuck there for a while and tried everything. I thought the noise was a crane that had to be operated to smash the open and as such kept my finger on the action button.

I agree about the ending and it tops off a very nice fun map. Hoping for more from the producer! Oh, and there is no way I would make it past the ending at high difficulty, not that good!
For this mission you need to infiltrate City 17 to kill mister Breed. After try to escape…This release is more based on thinking and little puzzle than on havy combats…exept the final battle. Design is above average and make a well straight forward even if short gameplay. The mod is well put together and create an enjoyable experience.
Please tell me what to do after killing breen! None of the doors will open (except the room you kill breen from and the gate to basement). I presume I have to get to the roof somehow but nothing works. I can’t even get on the ladder. Please help I love this mod up to now, and it looks like just getting exciting.

Thanks for the cryptic clue L337 the h4x0r. I found out what to do in the basement. Sort of obvious really as none of the doors open. Although I did try moving the barrels in front of all the doors down there and blowing them up to see if that would work first :-).Finished the mod last night, very cool!!! Thanks again.
This is gonna sound kinda ambarsing…But can eny1 help me, after getting the HEV suit, how are u suppossed to disable the power at the subway, I dont have a crowbar or anything?!?

Explode the barrels
This is a short mod and it will take you about 20 minutes to reach the final show down. It may, however, take you longer than that to make it through this encounter.
The key points to your mission, which is one of assassination, are conveyed via ingame messages. Whilst they are not too intrusive, they are somewhat unnecessary.
The scenes are well staged along with most of the architecture and textures. The whole mod is adequately designed with nothing much in the way of new stuff. The locations are well balanced with both open city and enclosed drainage systems.
The drainage system has the feel of a smelly and rusting place with only the rats missing. Navigation through the system is hindered by small pockets of zombies and Combine, concluding with a very unique and novel point of extraction.
Engagements are sparse and consist mainly of Combine, zombies and headcrabs. You do get to ride the buggy after you figure out how to lower the force field.
What new stuff there is, is featured in the end sequence and not wishing to give anything away, I will just say that it is both a unique piece of mapping and a very tough sequence to beat.
I experienced no technical issues with the design and it provided good continuity throughout the mod right up until the end sequence. More thought could have been given with regards to layout of this scene. The player requires more room for difficult manoeuvres and this could have been achieved without diminishing the intensity of the challenge.
Reading through the comments posted here on PlanetPhillip, it would appear that not many have played through this mod. I can only assume from the early comments that some players may have been put off by the negative points raised regarding installation issues. I experienced no problems with the game, installation or otherwise, so it would appear that any issues there were have long been corrected.

Conclusion
Whilst this mod does not have the content, gameplay or longevity to make it anything other than a short and enjoyable experience; it does illustrate how authors can provide the player with a different set of experiences resulting in a unique piece of gameplay.
If you haven’t played through this mod yet, or had problems installing an early level, I recommend you give it a try now. it’s well worth the playing time and the challenge of the last encounters.
My Recommendation
After killing Breen, head down the stairs and shoot the barrels of gas-the tricky part is the water valve. Remember to swim up not down! I really liked this short mod. It was only 5mb but seemed much longer. It had all the right elemts for a good Half Life mod with all the sights and sounds of the original. The enemy action was good and the ocean water looked very real and the blue sky was really a welcome sight. Too many of these are in the dark alot. This was good and I only wish it was longer-well done!
overall this was a nice playable short mod with plenty of action and different areas. the flow was pretty straight forward with text or hints as to how to proceed to the obj of taking out Breen,
After taking him out I did first head to the basement because when first entering the building that gate was locked, I did what was needed but didn’t notice the escape route, I just checked doors and all were locked so I headed back upstairs.
However I think 1 more line of text was really needed IMO. after taking out breen something like “head to basement to find a way out” would have saved on some frustration for me. To me the airship outside and the ladder leading to the rooftop normally would have indicated I needed to head to the roof and find a rocket launcher and ammo to take it out. This is not the case. with that understood this is very much worth the dload.
Works under Linux. But the Doors that opens towards me are bad marked that you can open them anyway….
