Fallout Vault 7

for Half-Life 2

20th July 2018

You seem to be on a train or plane. Things begin to shake – something is not right.

You wake up after crashing, outside a tunnel that leads to vault.

There is only one way forward.

Good luck!

    Okay I played this one through. As far as I can tell this is a follow up to Fallout Area 21, contiuning on where you get stunsticked and the screen blacks out. You start imprisoned in the cargo area of some kind of vehicle, my first instincts were it was a train because of the way it shaked around, but it turns out to be some kind of Combine transport aircraft. (that’s new!) Anyway, the plane crashes for unknown reasons, killing one of the two-man crew, you escape and pick up a crowbar and the dead pilots SMG, and kill the remaning pilot who is being attacked by headcrabs. You then pass through a number of sandy caves until you come to an entrance to a hidden underground lab of some kind, Vault 7. This lab reminded me of Black Mesa to some extent, and also some parts of System Shock 2. It’s infested with, you guessed it, zombies. Luckily this isn’t TOO overdone, and I never tire of shotgunning zombies in the… well, headcrab. Moving on, the lab seems to have been researching headcrabs, and somehow these headcrabs all got loose and turned on their tormentors, since the only enemies you come across in the lab are headcrabs and the humans they’ve possessed. The level design is fairly interesting, most of the furniture is actually custom made and looks like futuristic-lab furniture. The lab has laboratories, living quarters and cargo areas, supplies are often found in interesting custom made supply cabinets, which you must bust padlocks off of to open. There are also a couple of custom items — some dynamite and a security card namely, the former you can use to blow a door open. The gameplay is fairly simple and a bit too easy, since you only face zombies and headcrabs which are pretty much the least dangerous foes, the fact that there are few fast or poison zombies compounds the lack of difficulty. A fairly quick play through of a level, but the level design is quite interesting and I found it enjoyable to play jsut for the atmosphere.

    Conclusion, good level design, nice atmosphere, but it’s a bit too easy.
    Good effort, 7/10

  2. Play It Now!

    This one is way better according gameplay, design and puzzle perhaps a little to easy like Matty told but I without no doubt recommand to

  3. 2muchvideogames

    they were really generous with the ammo here

  4. Play It Now!

    ya know IMO for an old map this isn’t half bad. yea its bland and you can pretty much get thru it just bashing heads with the crow bar. but again for a short play I kinda liked it.
    With todays more polished maps/mods this was like playing an old Nintendo game as opposed to Wii

    Not that they really go together in any fashion but you might want to play “fallout” first, both are on the FileFront Direct page above under “broken link”

  5. Phillip says Maybe

    At first I was a little worried by the crude plane/spaceship design but once the map got going it did improve.

    In general, there were too many zombies and headcrabs with little thought for placement. It’s really just wandering from room to room and killing them.

    There is a section with a bomb, which is quite nice but of course makes no sense.

    Near the end, you collect a bunch of weapons and ammo but have no situation to use them, which leaves me feeling cheated.

    It doesn’t really have a progression or flow and doesn’t seem to offer anything cool.

    All in all, I can’t say much more than MAYBE.

    Maybe?

    Too much darkness for me.

    In 2005 it was pretty good, now I just felt bored. The Zombies looked bored too. There was a lot of what might have been; so if the map maker is still doing them, I bet they are a lot better.

    I finished the whole thing with the crowbar.

    I did play it a second time. sv_gravity 50 and shoot the barrels that explode. It was fun watching the bodies fly.

  7. Play It Later

    Interesting concept, yet weird layout worked on. It’s a simple and fun map to play, but almost confusing to complete what it was asking (keycard and vents).

    I easily got stuck two times, so I was forced to use noclip to proceed to the next area. Sorry!
    The ending was… kinda bad and confusing.

    Think Twice

    Well I don’t know anything about a connection to Fallout or to a previous map, but this short map is not terrible and not great.

    My main complaint is that it’s plain and boring. Nearly everything is on one floor and there’s little to no height to the map at all, let alone the combat. Which I’ll also complain about. It’s entirely too easy. You’re only up against zombies and headcrabs and a handful of antlions – but you’re given nearly the entire HL2 arsenal including a ton of contact grenades and AR2 grenades – plus an RPG – to deal with them, not to mention a ton of health and HEV power. I don’t think I was below 94 health the whole time.

    This map may be worth a look if you’re bored and have a spare 20 minutes or so. Otherwise you can skip it.

  9. Maybe?

    This map is old and it definitely shows. I think that its biggest flaw is that – for today’s standards – it’s way too basic, and you can kind of see that the mapper was experimenting with the engine at the same time, by using Hammer functions that – as I said above – are considered outdated.

    The map as a whole isn’t too bad though. You can see that the creator at least tried to make a decent map. The geometry is pretty simple, and the lighting isn’t really much better. The enemy placement was OK, but I think that there was WAY too much ammo. It’s funny because in other mods/maps I’ve complained about the lack of it. Also, one plus is that the map is actually long, which quite impressed me.

    Overall, if you’ve got 15-20 minutes to spare, and you want to kill some zombies, then look no further.

    Linux: No problems. I find the map entertaining because the design was different. I think mattydienhof has the best conclusion.

    Ok, so here I guess we have a decent map, considering these maps are from the beginning of HL2 modding.

    The whole map and combat feel very linear but that’s OK overall.

    It was nice to have the keycard puzzle, though I never really understood which was the purpose of the bomb.

    In conclusion, this was a decent map, and I guess its an OK PL.

  12. Maybe?

    This is a decent map, but there is so much ammo, healthkits, etc. that it just ends up feeling like a zombie map but with something to do. There isn’t really another way to put it. It’s rediculously easy.
    Several times in the map you have to search for a certain item (a keycard, for example). These are sometimes really hard to find, I couldn’t an item at first because it was underneath a zombie’s body.
    There are some horror elements here and there, but there is nothing done with it and it sometimes kind of feels out of place.
    Play this when you want to shoot some zombies, otherwise I can not really recommend this.

  13. Play It Later

    Good map and good storyline. I would play fallout in Half life 2 with joy.

  14. Maybe?

    This level seems to be a continuation of “Fallout area 21”. Actually, these maps are so different, if you compare the screenshots, it’s hard to say are they connected somehow. Some design elements tell us, that both “Fallout” maps and also “The hostage” are works of the same author. All of them use mixed HL1-HL2 stylistic with model props placed alongside brush-based objects. But in “Fallout vault 7” use of brush-based geometry even more abundant than in any other Demalition`s map, some examples:
    – HL1-styled glass doors;
    – glass tables with the texture of Combine metal (the shape of their legs is quite interesting);
    – shelves (also with the texture of Combine metal);
    – first aid lockers (I haven’t seen something like this in other mods);
    – the wall lamps, which superficially resemble lamps in de_dust from the original Counter-Strike, but when you look closer, you see that their design is actually more complex;
    – pendulous lamps;
    – red HL1-style alarm lighting, and the trolley, both at the last part of the map.
    It shows that Demalition is pretty experienced GoldSource mapper, who used to work with brushes and made up many clever ways of using them. When he moved to Source mapping, he continued to use these technics, manually creating his own objects instead of reusing props provided by the game.
    Even the airplain, where we start our journey, is brush-based, which is unfortunate in this case, because it looks very blocky and underdetailed.

    The level itself represents an underground base, which for unknown reason was flooded with headcrabs just before our character has appeared here. The feel of the disaster is perfect: dead bodies and blood all over the place, numerous zombies and headcrabs, blocked doors and sparkling lamps, darkness and scary noises… The overall look and feel of the level reminds Black Mesa complex.

    The author tried to add to his level something beyound plain shooting, so you’ll need to search some additional items or activate something. There is nothing hard or extraordinal, but still it will require some time to figure things out. This map is quite big, so I spent about half an hour to complete it. Huge improvement over the previous author`s maps.

    Unfortunately, besides the “puzzles” the level is too easy to play. It is not challenging at all, even on hard setting. There is plenty of ammo and health, should be enough to kill all the enemies once or twice again. And the majority of the enemies are regular zombies, which aren’t that dangerous. Because of this I don’t consider complete lack of autosaving here as a disadvantage. Probably, it would be nice to have, but since the map is so easy, there is no point.

    Personally, I like “Fallout area 21” more than this one, too bad he hasn’t developed that map into something bigger. Still, “Fallout vault 7” is a decent map, lots of work were put here, so it was quite interesting to play the map for the first time. In my opinion, it has low replayability value, though it might be good for some relax shooting, when you’re just not in the mood for challenges.

    Pros:
    – the level design is pretty unique, diverse and interesting
    – good sound effects and diverse ambient
    – horror mood
    – has some interactivity
    – requires some thinking
    – scripted opening scene

    Cons:
    – some level elements and objects are blocky or low-res
    – minor lighting glitches
    – the enemies are not very diverse
    – too easy to play even on hard skill (too many supplies)

    =========== Author`s readme translation ===========
    Note: this mod has a number of quests. For those of you, who don’t want to strain their brains, there are hints below. If you want to solve them by yourself, don’t read the final part of the readme.

    The story
    ————————————————————————
    When I regained consciousness, my head was aching. I still had my suit, but there were several holes in it. All of my shoulders and chest was in blood. At first, I had no understanding where I am. I raised my head and look around. The place I saw was similar to a plain or something like that. Suddenly, a shaking began…

    =========================== HINTS ======================================
    ————————————————————————

    1. If the terminal does not work, try shooting it.
    2. For some places (when there is nowhere to go), you need to drag something to be able to jump on bridge, into vent etc.
    3. Sometimes you will need some item to open the door. Press use key to grab the item.

  15. Good map. Ok game play. Not really challenging. 90% headcrabs with tons of ammo. Worth a play or two.

  16. Play It Later

    Good. Reminiscent of HL1.
