Ran the exe. Very quick message (100ms) saying wait a minute WW3 is unpacking. Searched. Couldn’t find it anywhere. Did the Win 98/ME compatability thing, as described for mission 1, got ” runtime error 216². Same for WW3 mission 1.

  2. I also get that error running in 98 compatibility but also another box comes up too.If you get the second box click forget it then the installer will run.

  3. piledriver

I get “Runtime error at (mem location)” message box, then another “Runtime error at (mem location)” message box on top of the first one.
Each box has only a “OK” button, when clicked, nothing happens.
    Thanks anyway.
PS the ww3.exe (mission 1)is 1,285 KB and
    the ww3m2.exe (mission 2)is 2296 KB
    Same as yours?

  4. piledriver

Oops, I mean ww3m2.exe is 2332 KB unpacked.

  5. ww3m2 is 2.27 MB (2,387,673 bytes)

but on that one it works fine even with the runtime error and no compatibility. My other post was for ww3.exe and I posted in wrong topic lol.

OK, well I gues that’s another one for my “unplayable” list.
Pity, “cos mission 3 is pretty good.

Oooh! first time I’ve used that one!

In case you overlooked the first episode of this series by mapper Evan Broder, you didn’t miss much. Unfortunately, the same can be said if you choose to skip this one too. There’s nothing to see here – move along.

When we last left our hero at the end of Mission 1, he had accomplished his terribly simple goal of crossing the ITO border, after just the briefest of firefights, thanks to an army of Barnies on his side. Mission 2 finds him trying to “borrow” a vehicle and get to Iraq. While Mission 1 was a single map, Mission 2 is spread over 4 maps, but each one is really small. But having small maps doesn’t mean the r_speeds are good – there were several spikes over 1500. Which is not the worst I’ve seen, but enough to dip framerates quite a bit, and of course they occurred in the middle of the two major firefights in which you will be engaged.

The one and only redeeming quality of this map is the combat. You will be involved in two major firefights in this pack, with a mixture of grunts and assassins. The firefights differ significantly, however. In one, you are in a relatively open area and have the opportunity to pick off some of the enemies from hidden spots. In the final (and toughest) map, you exit an underground bunker and are immediately surrounded by a handful of grunts and an assassin. Hope you saved some of your grenades from the previous maps.

World War 3: Mission 2 does include some new weapon models, but they are just replacements for the standard Half-Life models. The crowbar is now a hatchet, the .357 has been replaced with another handgun, and the MP5 is now an AK-47. But the author didn’t bother updating the HUD graphics to show the new weapons. Furthermore, the arms on the AK-47 model are blue and don’t match the arms on the other models. It looks like these models were haphazardly slapped into this pack. The grunts are carrying MP5s, as usual, but when they die they magically drop AK-47s. Not to mention that the AK-47 has no visible grenade launcher.

The design and architecture, as in Mission 1, are very basic and leave a lot to be desired. There are parts of the ruins that look decent, but at the expense of speed, and overall everything is blocky and very dull, although the vehicles in the map are decently done. The lighting is poorly done in general, and in fact in the text file, the author admits there are “some leaks.” That’s not a good sign. For those of you not familiar with mapping, a leak in your map is a very Bad Thing,as it prevents you from compiling your map properly and optimizing its speed and appearance. Not that it makes much of a difference in this case.

This pack is chock full of things that make you say, “huh?” First is the incredibly inane installation program, which won’t work until you delete Mission 1 (if you were unwise enough to play that one), unless you trick it by installing to a temporary directory and then copying the files to your HL directory. Just give us a zip file, for God’s sake! In the first map, you come across some clothing, and a message pops up saying something to the effect that you’ve found a disguise, so the ITO soldiers won’t shoot you. Approximately 5 seconds later, I come across said soldiers and they shoot me. Not only do they magically drop AK-47s, but they can see through all disguises too! Also keep an eye out for the huge paper mache boulder that you can practically toss across the map. Say it with me: “huh?”

While Mission 2 is a slight improvement over Mission 1, this one’s still a turkey. Sorry if I am insulting you, turkeys. But it’s not over yet – a Mission 3 is on the way!

  8. This mod requires you to be careful with so many enemies around. On Hard you will have to skip most of the areas. The city is pure “you’re surround” area as the second area. All enemies are facing you and no cover, so it is designed on Easy but if you have good reflexes, otherwise you’ll die even on easy.
