A nice mini campaign, a little different from the usual Half-Life maps. On the positive side cool level design in the style of SF movies like “2001 A Space Odysee” and “Aliens” which doesn’t really fit into the HL universe, but looks great nevertheless. On the negative side the campaign is a bit too long which makes you notice the repetition of the new elements and the continous alarm sounds really got on my nerves! I wonder if the developer is deaf or always turned the sound down ;). Still you should play it…
Completely agree with the summary of this map in the comments above.
It is really a “Play It Now” based on gameplay, layout design, length and visuals, all of which are very good. However the constant noise, while appropriate for the theme, is way too much and grates on the brain as time goes on. There are a few areas which are potential “game stoppers” where the combination of too dark, no contrast colors and too hidden grates leave one searching for a way forward for long periods.
Also the complex deteriorates with things blowing up with every movement into a new area, which gets funny after a while. It reminded me, for those like me who are old enough to remember the fabulous TV comedy series SCTV, and Canadian comedian in countless movies, John Candy – ” blowed up, blowed up real good!” 😀

Half-Life: The World Machine is a fantastic looking mod that aims to look more like a place from Ridley Scott’s Alien universe than Half-Life. The entire mod has really detailed environments and good combat encounters.
This would be a “play it now” if it weren’t for the constant noise. The mod is emulating Alien and therefore has lots of very fitting alarms sounding throughout Gibson, unfortunately these alarms NEVER STOP, almost the entire mod is a constant barrage of sound that will eventually start to drive you mad. I feel like this really takes away from the mod at times from some downtime or quieter areas would really allow you to take in the detail of the map design.

Alarms are part of the experience 😛
Headaches are part of the experience too I guess
Mapping is pretty cool (got really Kubrick-ish in the end), although the level design itself seems a bit simplistic. Game almost lost me on the “go and find another energy cube” part. I see why everyone is suggesting to “play it later”. Difficulty wise this I consider this mod as easy, but shells are scarce, and you should be very careful trying not to waste all your HEV at once, because the HEV and health dispensers are only located on the start of each “floor”. And there are almost no physics puzzles. Honestly, the game structure, with levels (floors) and some arena fights suits more a Doom WAD, rather than a half-life mod.
Speaking of mapping, it always surprised me how people managed to create such cool looking stuff in such uncomfortable programs (like Doombuilder or Hammer) 😀 I hope there will be an intuitive level editor for this type of games some day.
Complete playthrough with Xash3D engine: https://youtu.be/XiHLUHUK2pw (sorry for alt-tabbing, I’ve been tinkering with my config settings to make main character movement more pleasing, because I really hate default HL movement – Gordon is moving on molasses or something)

Sorry, replied to the wrong comment. Site’s design a bit wanky. And there is no way to edit nor delete your message, ok
Good design overall, good amount of puzzles, but not very satisfying gameplay.

First of all, happy 25th anniversary to Half-Life. And with this mod, I’ve enjoyed it a lot more because this is a pretty decent one. Let’s begin, first off the textures, level designs, story, they’re all good. You’re gonna have to go down to the world machine, get the data and escape, simple as that, straight forward clear and concise objective. There are also interesting puzzles, most of them use common sense but there are some that you need to use your brain a little more. The only downsides in this one is the combat. For some reason, I find it way too easy. You run, you shoot, rinse and repeat. I played this on hard mode and I didn’t die once, from any enemy. Sure there are alien grunts but they’re the only challenges I’ve been through in terms of combat. The only time I died is when I was being a dumb**s to puzzles.
From the opening cutscene, this mod was able to make an impressively cohesive atmosphere that felt like it really was a separate sector of Black Mesa. The use of original and custom textures worked to make each map feel related to the wider whole of the science facility, but while using instruments more relevant to the Gibson.
Aside from the environment, the maps felt very functional too. It was never difficult to understand where to go, despite the maze-like feel of a lot of corridor shooters, and there was no shortage of well-placed cover that also made sense outside of a combat scenario. While I felt the ammo and health pickups were sparse, I did play on Hard, so I imagine on Medium they’d probably have been just right. In retrospect, I sort of wished I had.
My only problem with the map was that, in lieu of a soundtrack or ambience, there are alarms. I mean completely nonstop throughout the entire game, there are alarms blasting, sometimes so many at once that the game can’t play other sound effects over them. There was a surprising variety of alarms, and they changed rather often. It really seemed like there was a decent effort put into making them as bearable as possible, but they are still just alarms. It was a unique experience, that’s for sure.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable, fun, immersive map, not too easy or difficult, but with the drawback of a very loud, shrill ambience throughout. I’ll definitely be replaying this eventually, but maybe with music playing.

A well balanced and challenging mod demo. Lots of new assets, if you’re a fan of USS Darkstar (and by extension, the Aliens film series) you are going to enjoy this mod.
I was playing completely blind, and moving as fast as I could; playing that way took me 2 hours and change. There are some areas where you have to potential to get lost and there is some backtracking.
Only thing I would do is maybe have areas where the alarm isn’t constantly blaring, that was pretty annoying.
Highly recommend.

Really neat mod! I had my gripes, but I did enjoy it. I thought the level design was simple but still engaging. Had a generally nice flow as most HL mods should. Gameplay itself was good and became proper fun on floor 3 and beyond. Again, simple but engaging. Most memorable moment was The very strange maze puzzle, which can be used against HECU soldiers and squish them. That was quite funny.
Environments in this mod is easily the highlight. Insane amounts of detail and a good amount of times I took a moment to take it in. One of the prettier Half Life mods.
My two biggest gripes are the pretty frequent alarms and flickering. I usually don’t mind either normally, but here it was a bit too much and I can imagine some being disoriented. The biggest offender was the end, where you have to fight assassins under a constant flickering light. It was actually quite difficult for me and for the wrong reasons. Didn’t feel too good. Environments at points could also be a little too dim, although that is minor.
Overall I’m quite I sat down and played this. I would generally recommend it!

This mod was a very pleasant surprise and it was the HL1 fix I needed!
For starters, I loved the mod’s atmosphere and architectural design. Despite what the description says, this version of Black Mesa is unlike the one we all know and love; this time you’ll mostly navigate through dark, wide, dimly-lit corridors that’ll definitely remind you of sci-fi movies of yesteryear, mainly Alien and 2001 as stated by the other reviewers above. It’s all implemented very well in my opinion and the level of detail in a few places was really impressive!
The mapper also succeeds in invoking a sense of dread, claustrophobia and paranoia with the use of flashing lights, loud and constant sirens and – of course – Xen creatures appearing out of nowhere to ambush you!
Speaking of which, the combat itself was very fun and that’s because the enemy placement was nearly perfect if you ask me! Each area had exactly the type of enemy you would expect it to have and when the human grunts started appearing, the mod got even better! Those fights with the shattering glasses are arguably some of the most memorable fights I’ve encountered in HL1 mods and maps!
The design itself was also very good: the division of the map into 4 literal and figurative levels was a very nice touch and it also helps that each level had its own distinct “mission” that you had to accomplish in order to progress through the mod.
I don’t really have any major complaints; if I could add something it would be a few more puzzles. It wouldn’t be anything major or groundbreaking, but it’d be just enough to change the pace a bit. Also, the sound of sirens really got tiring near the end, but maybe that’s just me! 😛
Overall, I think this mod is really great and just plain fun! If you’re looking for a good old-fashioned HL1 mod or at least one with a horror sci-fi feel, then this 60-90 minute mod is just the one you need!

These maps have some flaws, but are overall fun to play and visually quite impressive.
+ Decent playtime
+ Good use of colored lighting
+ Very detailed environments
+ Mostly fun combat
– Partially confusing map design
– Some lights blink at a rate that can be uncomfortable
– A wide variety of annoying sirens play throughout the entire mod
– Textures are used/tiled weirdly in some spots – Especially in the final combat encounter, which is basically just a big, red box.
If you’re stuck in the starting area: The blue lockers in one of the rooms contain a crowbar. I actually was stuck for a bit, as I didn’t expect these lockers to be interactable…

Short and sweet. Interesting visuals, inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey. The combat is fun, engaging but not too challenging. The art style is interesting to see in the GldSrc engine, though theres constant alarms. They never stop blaring, but you can adjust to it after a while. Definitely a must play!

This was really enjoyable mappack. the design, layout and texturing was great with a simple but good background story
The fact that the author give you explanation trough onscreen message prevent you to get lost of turn arround for minutes
Progress and thing to do is quite repetitive but at the other hand there are some rewarding through secret area that are welcome since there isn’t a lot of health and power
For me a really enjoyable experience that didn’t give me any frustration, thank a lot to the author to create it 🙂
