“Similar to Super Gordon Bros, this time Gordon somehow manages to get to Dracula’s castle. Of course, it’s full of zombies and Gordon’s duty is to cleanse the castle of this filth.”

– ***TO MAKE THE CROWBAR ONE-HIT-KILL ENEMIES, YOU NEED TO WRITE “sk_plr_dmg_crowbar 100” IN THE CONSOLE. ***
– The fire vases at the start contain all your necessary equipment.
– Breaking the candles doesn’t give you anything, except for the one kill-everything-on-screen candle.
– The health in the wall is here, just like in the original.
– If you’re wondering why this level was split into 2 maps, it’s because of Source’s stupid limitation of the number of brushes in one map.

What’s not to like? A recreation of an old game with limited gameplay mechanics and only forward to go.
Okay, I make it sound terrible, but it’s not. It’s a fun 7 minutes of your time and for those that have played Castlevania, this is probably pretty cool.
I say PLAY IT! just for the change of style.

OK well I’ve not played a Metroidvania game but I sure hope they are better than this. Sure, I’ll give credit that it’s an idea we don’t see every day, but this just isn’t that appealing.
There’s no reason despite what the author says that this needs to be 2 maps. The problem is that you’ll need to enter the supplied cheat code (to make the crowbar 1-hit kills) at the start of each map. The graphics are throwback as is the music, but for some reason you’re kind of confined in one dimension – not totally, mind you – but there’s a persistent invisible wall that only lets you move laterally a few feet. I suppose in the spirit of side-scrolling platformers?
Some may have a couple minutes of fun with it but at best it’s a 5 minute distraction. In fact, it’s distracting you from better maps.

It was short and sweet. It is not something to play more than once. If you are old enough to remember the 1980’s then try it out for nostalgia. Otherwise skip it.
I did enjoy it.

I didn’t really enjoy this because the player has very restricted lateral movement and no HEV suit.

I guess for Castlevania fans this is like a nostalgic storm. But I really haven’t played that game, so I really never felt connected to it.
The whole gameplay feels just like a big, big tribute to that game. So HL2 gameplay is absolutely dire because you only have that boring crowbar against the also super boring zombies.
The only thing I liked about the map was the 8-bit music.
Yeah, so this is a big, big Think Twice for me.
