Similar to BM kill-all-military-forces mappack with no surprises.
Your mission here is to save your fellow scientists in facility called RES after the BM incident.
This complex has been also polluted with aliens from Xen.
As you try to help out a little once again, you realise military forces also arrived there, killing everything on the two legs…

So much for the yaaaaawn! story. It’s not really necessary to save anyone, just go in, kill everything in your way and find out again. Poor.

The mapping starts not bad, you’re outside in the desert and have to find a way into the facility.
That’s easier said than done because soldiers are scattered here and there already.
And you don’t have and HEV suit…yet.
That’s the first big disadvantage because you don’t know how much health you have and switching weapons can be annoying. It takes a while to find the suit..
So mapping is some sort of interesting at first but gets more and more boring later on ingame.
The office section is nice, also the “introduction” of the Gauss weapon which will come in handy.
There are some other sections like labs, a warehouse and a elevator shaft.
Unfortunately very empty, not creating a good atmosphere.

Combat is okay but average, nothing special. Quite many weapons can be found.
The AI is sort of stupid, besides the aliens act not that stupid like the human grunts.
Balancing is okay, play on medium or hard.

Puzzles are missing almost totally. To be honest I was happy when I finally finished it.
Once you have to backtrack a quite long way only after hitting one button.
That’s annoying, at least there are new enemies on your back then.

In conclusion it was no fun to me to play it, so I can’t recommend it to any type of players.
Maybe the combat saves it, but there are better mappacks with neat combat action.
It simply lacks of better design and layouts, puzzles and atmosphere.

    Playtime: ~15 minutes

  4. Ten Four Reviews

Though this may be Deraj’s first map for Half-Life, it’s evidently not his first attempt at editing. The levels on show demonstrate a quality sadly lacking from the other two releases reviewed today. While RES is still some ways from the highlights of the Quake 2 mapping scene, it’s up at the top of the pile as far as Half-Life single-player is concerned.

The main area where RES is lacking is in originality. What’s here is great but there’s never a moment when you think, “Wow, that’s cool.” It has to be said that while the other two levels I posted today may have been seriously flawed in other areas, the authors there at least tried to do something a little different in places. RES, basically, is as generic as Half-Life levels come.

With that criticism out of the way, the rest of RES is great. The visuals are very solid. As with the maps in general, you won’t find any particular highlights but everything that’s there has been done very well with no obvious mistakes. Rooms are carefully constructed and the brief external scene is as good as you’ll find elsewhere.

Gameplay is also of a high standard. Set-pieces were, as you might expect by my comments at the beginning, somewhat lacking but it’s still a good blast. The mix of grunts and aliens is nice – including a couple of battles between the two – and, though it’s not especially challenging, it’s certainly good fun. The ending was a bit abrupt and I felt one period of backtracking was unnecessary but otherwise it’s fine.

Although it would be fair to say that RES is ultimately quite a bland experience, it does something which other Half-Life levels have failed to do so far: it successfully presents an almost entirely combat-oriented set of levels, the kind we’re more used to seeing produced for Quake 2. It’s not exactly what you might be expecting from a Half-Life unit but it’s still a lot of fun.

  5. Ten Four Reviews

Yep, I definitely agree with Morgan on this one… RES was fun but adds nothing innovative except for a small twist in the layout which was totally unexpected and had me stumped until I read the text file; I actually though RES had no exit for a while 🙂 Fortunately, it does.

Just one little quick point that I thought I could add: I died a lot in RES. There was a little uneveness in the balance as I found the grunt/assassin (especially the latter) had me really struggling while the alien fights were pretty easy and drab. Maybe I’m just use to offing dumbass aliens from Quake2 and suck when it comes to humans 🙂 Any case, RES is a blast of fun that’s mostly mindless and contains a good flow of continuous action.

  6. Play It Later

RES is a nice little jaunt through some alien infested labs at the RES Research Facility. While the design of the areas isn’t awful, there are a lot of areas that feel a little too open. The corridors are long, wide and largely devoid of details. The whole thing starts to feel like a slog the further you get into it.

That being said, there are a few areas that break up the monotony but there’s a problem there too. More often than not I found myself thinking, “This looks a lot like Half-Life.”

Now I know, reviewing a Half-Life map pack that sounds like a pretty obvious thing to say, but what I mean is that some sections straight up borrow designs directly from Half-Life. Specifically the Anomalous Materials and Questionable Ethics labs.

The balance is also a little out of whack. I audibly groaned when I realised I was having to face off against a group of assassins with no AR grenades and dwindling HP. That being said, despite dying a number of times throughout RES, it never really felt unfair and it was always possible to try something another way in order to beat it. Overall, I’d say this is worth a play.

  7. Play It Now!

After playing a whole heap of ’99 maps I can safely say RES ranks among the top. It doesn’t do any one thing exceptionally but rather does everything competently. There’s nothing really new here but for a mapset from 1999 it is supremely playable and has a consistent level of quality from start to end.

If you get enjoyment from playing especially old maps, like I do, then definitely check RES out.

  8. Personal Favourite

    DO NOT PLAY ON HARD.
These marines are very mobile, they go in and out very easily. So the peek out trick might not be as stable as you think. It’s required some movility and planification.
I am still thinking if that Gargantua can be killed by a falling rock, it seems the boulder never fall over his head. It always misses. What the heck and is never following you anyway. I though Gargantua was designed to follow you and he kills every marine just in 1 second and go for the next one so I just run away, while the Gartgantua do the hard job. But what really happened is that he parked himself in front of the door and no more, he gets tired like a cow and don’t even walk that garbage. It’s even worse, when he follows you, he’s ignoring soldiers, what a mess of gargantua.
Gordon Freeman climbing lift rope? And shoot from the rope up near the top ceiling. What a rambo hero! I never saw this before, Gordon shooting from the rope. How can he climb the rope like I am running on the ground?
