Escapade

for Black Mesa

23rd February 2017

The transit system had taken Gordon to within a whisker of the surface, and safety.

However the military, ostensibly there to rescue the facilities personnel, had cut power to all the surface access doors.

The test reactor housed in Area 3’s nearby laboratories offered a solution to this predicament.

If Gordon could fire it up he should be able to redirect power to the access doors from the control room.

The way ahead was dangerous, but with luck this would be the final escapade.

Author’s Note

Escapade is the (belated) follow up to my previous maps, Overtime and Quarantine. This will most likely be the conclusion to the series. Building all three has been a big learning experience and any feedback is most welcome.

  1. Phillip says Play It!

It’s been a while since I played and recorded any Black Mesa maps and I have always enjoyed JamaicanDave’s work and this was no different.

It seems to me that each release builds on the last and this one shows higher levels of detail than anything I can previously remember playing from JD.

The interactions with enemies are perhaps less but each is more important.

This map features a fairly convoluted layout but is linear nevertheless. Visuals and environmental elements are both well done and the overall feel of the map is that there is nothing extra added – giving it a feeling of tightness.

There might be some areas that I didn’t get to and that alone makes a replay worth it, along with the fact I only played on EASY and want to challenge myself on a higher difficulty setting.

I have little doubt you will enjoy this release and, like me, will be left wanting more from JD.

Another BM mod, keep them coming! I wish more people would make BM mods.

Ha ha Roboserg, you found ‘the’ toilet. During map construction we were joking on Discord that the toilets are the most important feature of any Black Mesa map. Dolmo always likes to mention it in his videos (and how he dislikes text on screen), so I snuck in the dedication as a bit of fun 🙂

  3. Play It Now!

A very enjoyable little BM map. It looked terrific and was fun to play. I too wish more people made stuff for the BM universe!

Nice Map! I love this Black Mesa! Is it possible to enter the Security office with the eye scanner? I couldn’t get that..

    1. JamaicanDave

There might be a way 😉

  5. Anon_1495156

Nice one, you could of put it a little harder but it was still good work man!

  6. Play It Later

I pretty solid and straight forward map.

    Pro:
    -Nice design
-increasing difficulty yet overall throughout the level to easy (died only once due to grunts.)
-Small plot in which you got to activate a generator in order to unlock additional doors for your escape.
-Few scripted sequences and vox messages.

    Contra:
-To short and best suited for any coffee break.
-To easy 3/4 of the mod consists of headcrabs and Zombies only and the rest of it of few grunts. Besides an easy to kill bullsquid no other monsters were used not counting friendly scientists.

All in all a solid nice looking map with smooth frame rates and decent game play.

  7. Play It Later

I can’t recall anything I played 1 day ago, glad I record the gameplay.

Map is short, probably same length as Quarantine and Overtime. Might even shorter because Quarantine took me over 20 minutes while this one took me only 15 minutes.(Either short or I’m good at Black Mesa mods suddenly)

Whole mod is like a walk in the park, A three-year-old playing this won’t die once until encountering the grunts, and you can just run past them like nothing if you have enough health.

I should play this in hard.

I know I’m criticizing this mod quite a lot here. Still, I say PIL because this isn’t that bad compare to some maps in Steam workshop. Anyway, I hope I can see some mods like Stalwart made by the same author.

By the way, what’s up with that scanner door?

  8. I can’t say it’s cool. Map is short and not intresting. I don’t like mods for BM but this not bad than others. So, i say – you can play.

    Play It Now!

I said it’s great to play some cool BM polish maps, this time JamaicanDave’s work is outstanding because the whole mapping improves from his first release:”Overtime”.

In this map, I loved the combat between Xenian enemies and Grunts. It was well balanced and dynamic all the way. The map had some very cool sections to explore and reflects well the Black Mesa mayhem and that feeling of scientist terrorized by the crisis situation and the military persecution.

About the environment, I just love the way the 3 scientists at the beginning of the map are begging to the grunts for help, and then you can actually save them when the soldiers came to the facility and attempt to kill them. I actually did save them acting rapidly and kill the 2 grunts with my powerful shotgun.

Overall this is a nice JD release, and I hope he integrates the 3 separated maps into one BM mod, you know, to play the 3 as a whole mod product would be pretty nice to play.

  10. Play It Now!

I recently revisited this map to remember just how much I enjoyed it and how well it has been designed. The map itself is fairly compact and it often lets the player see locations they are going to reach, and places they have previously been. The theme remains mostly consistent throughout and when variation is thrown in, it does it in such a way that blends together very well. The guidance of the player is done in a way that is in no way patronizing and it does not feel forced but instead feels natural. It especially does well in guiding the player in backtracking situations.

The objective is very clear from the start as voice lines from BMS have been reused to help point the player in the right direction. This is a great thing to do, especially when there is a line that fits the objective. The combat was really well set up when the player is fighting marines. They hold back and fight you at a distance were it gives you as a player many options on how to approach the situation. There were however a few too many zombies and headcrabs and, while it’s good to have them every now and again, they do get tedious after a while. There were other alien enemies that did not make a big appearance that would have been nice to see.

There were plenty of things to do outside combat. There was aspects of exploration were the player could look for ammo/health and also rooms in which the player could look and enjoy the level design. Overall the map was really fun and probably my favourite BMS map so far this year. I did make an analysis video on it back when it was released but I don’t think I did a good job in truly explaining the techniques used to create this level but you can go and find it if you want my full play through.

  11. Play It Now!

Aaaaaand done I am with the JamaicanDave trilogy. And what a fitting end this was.

Something I only now realised is: these maps really benefit from the extremely limited choice of weaponry. I don’t think this would have felt as good with an entire arsenal to choose from.

I don’t think I’ve anything to complain about, actually. The whole map was fun, the combat challenging but not unfairly hard… oh wait I do have something to complain about. The bathroom. Sneaking through the vent just for nothing and a gun… quite a disappointment that.

There, I’ve filed my mandatory complaint, back to praising the map.

Like I said, nothing to complain about. The layout felt cool enough and the least linear of all three maps – especially because the way back isn’t the same route you took to the reactor. Enough ammo placed, a limited selection of guns and enemies, clever layout… pretty cool and I do have to say, this map just barely missed the “Personal Favourite” rating.

(The sliding double doors still look out of place, though.)

    1. Ha, I’ll have to try that little bit harder next time 🙂

I very recently looked back at my first three maps because the next Black Mesa update will require them all to be recompiled. Quite an interesting experience now that over a year has passed since the last release. It’s a little easier to look at things more objectively. Whilst there’s some bits I’d like to touch up and tweak, overall I’m still fairly satisfied. The main goal was to build some solid maps and have each one being slightly more accomplished than the previous. In that respect I like to think they were a success.

      1. They certainly were a success!

  12. I’m running Black Mesa beta 1.0, and this map crashed the game when I tried
    to load it from console.

    1. The map download on RTSL is from 2017 and I doubt it’s compatible with more recent versions of the game. An updated version of Escapade for the definitive edition of Black Mesa is available on the steam workshop.
