HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Let’s hope this is the best year for HL modding ever.
As some of you may know, I have been away, but I’m back for 4 days and then off for another week.
I’ll be posting some maps and mods when I get back, but nothing before.
What have I missed in the last 10 days?
And what plans do you have for 2017?
Each month I create a “General Chat” post for readers to post whatever they want within the limits of being a family-friendly website.
Please don’t post reviews, questions or comments about maps and mods listed on the site – post them on the respective post – all those comments will be deleted. I do this to ensure that when a reader visits a map or mod page, all the information is in one place.
Back in June 2014, I started to use a poster from a classic Sci-Fi movie as the background for the post image.
Starting in June 2016, I started to use images taken from old FPS games.
And now, for 2017, I will be using images inspired by Sci-Fi book series
This month it is Duneby Frank Herbert.
“Set tens of thousands of years in the future, the saga chronicles a civilization which has banned artificial intelligence but has also developed advanced technology and mental and physical abilities. Vital to this empire is the harsh desert planet Arrakis, only known source of the spice melange, the most valuable substance in the universe.”
Without doubt, this is one of my favourite series. I’ve re-read then twice, so I’ve read the complete series three times. I generally, love Hard Sci-Fi but this is Soft Sci-Fi. If you read what Herbert had planned for the full series you would be amazed, at least I was! I tried to read a book written by his son and collaborators but just because they contained Frank’s ideas didn’t automatically make them good. In fact, I hated the one and only book I tried and won’t try again.
The image is a crop from Angelitoon, taken from his Devinat Art page. It’s his birthday today which is a wonderful co-incidence as this is the day I updated this page with the new monthly theme idea and his image.
I’ll be using art I find on Deviant Art as the “featured image” image.
Happy New Year.
This year I’m waiting for :
GoldSrc :
-The Core
-Residual Life 1.5 (which will or will not be the best vanille HL1 mod ever because 1.4 is that good)
-Monorail Quest
-Brutal Half Life next version
Source mods are FUBAR but I’m still waiting for Lost Squad and GString version 2.
MEGA CITY ONE is nearing completion 🙂
And Xen is coming!
Hopefully release Alpha 1 of my modification Above the Catacombs.
multi player mods so we can beat each others with crobars and finding headcrab slippers for pp.
I’m just waiting for Underhell Chapter 2.
Hell, they could Black Mesa/Insurgency it and I would definitely buy it.
Also hyped for ARRANGEMENT mod for HL1 and the Xen Update for Black Mesa…
really excited to see what they did to the Nihilanth and Gonarch in Xen Black Mesa. There is A LOT they could do wrong, but I trust them.
We’ll do our best for ARRANGEMENT in 2017 ^^
Been busy updating the Cthulhu Remod i released a couple of years back.
Reskinning monsters that i’ve missed, altering few models to work better (the staring mouth-less cultists for one), combining the old and new Cultists dialogues for variety, and giving the HUD a highres look for the larger monitors.
Unlike the previous Remod version, I’m actually changing things in the maps this time, like removing the xenlight’s turn-off-when-close behavior so that you can see while also adding colored crystals to ease navigation in the maze at “The Ghouls Lair”.
I’m currently adding glows & signposts in The “The Shadows over Innsmouth” chapter both for people who just want to skip to the exit and explorers that don’t want to get lost.
Other alterations just currently include adding sounds to the silent doors and blocking walls that you can climb on top of the CLIP on to.
(I know at this point i could’ve just taken the HoENE initiative and just remake the entire mod from scratch, but i’m not really knowledgeable both in Goldsource development and Lovecraft lore to properly do such an arduous task.
Also because i’m lazy.)
And that’s it, it is done, got a whole new trailer for it and everything.

I didn’t really change anything on the brush side, but on entity side, there’s a bunch of new stuff here and there modified.
Funny enough, PhilG (the creator of the mod) actually had his sources of the mod released to the folks at HLC during the Mini-Redux-Task-Force run of their Cthulhu remake (before that bit the dust).
I didn’t really utilize them for the Remod due to the “i can’t be arsed” reason, but, if you guys want to know how this mod ticks :

For this year, I’m planing on working on:(Is that correct?)
•The Maze
•No Jump
•And getting better at level designing, lightning…
I hope you will all be fine this year!
Can’t wait my first year of High-School end.
My best wish to everybody!
And also, I will maybe participate The Hammer Cup 2017!Maybe.
Maybe I’ll make a mod myself already. Or atleast a map Dx
Happy New Year everybody!
The Hammer Cup 2017 will be a great opportunity for you 🙂
I sure will take it into consideration, thanks!
I was actually getting all ready to make this post myself when I saw Phillip posted it yesterday. 🙂
For everyone waiting for Half-Rats: Parasomnia, I decided to wait until version 1.1 is released before posting it here on RTSL. Apparently the mod has a lot of serious issues, including disappearing enemies – so waiting for a patch is the right decision.
edit: here is the Half-Rats: Parasomnia download if you want to play it in the meantime.
Most of the work left for 1.1 are maps related stuff and that’s Thanos’s responsibility. In the meantime, I’m just reviewing the code again and again and again and again to optimize, track more bugs and fix them, rework stuff to be more modding friendly.
I just released version 9.7 of my Unofficial Patch for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines between Christmas and New Year which contains another new map in cooperation with a modder who plans a prequel for the game! We have added 7 new maps over the last years using an old Hammer editor that some cool Russian guys modified to work with the game which uses an early alpha-Source engine. I’m sure some more updates will follow this year and hopefully the prequel itself too!
So, Phillip, you went for a holiday where there is no Sun??
What happened to the Sun?
did it leave the EU? 😉
Best wishes on a Great 2017 and I look forward to watching you play.
Can’t wait for Xen in Black Mesa, which I heard is coming this summer, and of course there’s Half-Life 3, but can’t get our hopes up for that one.
I’m gonna be participating in THC 2017, as well as hopefully learning more about Unreal Engine 4 and 3D Modelling. Aside from that, waiting for news about Underhell.
MEGA CITY ONE Version 1.0 has been released and is available to download!
http://www.moddb.com/mods/mega-city-one/downloads/mega-city-one
I hope it will be on RunThinkShootLive as well as soon as possible 🙂
(I know Phillip is away for a while)
Crowbar has released MEGA CITY ONE!
It’ll soon be here on RTSL, but for now you can grab it at ModDB.
Wasn’t there a “Submit” Button on this site? Do I have to submit my Mod? How is the procedure? I can’t find the Submit Button for some reason.
The submit button has been removed. You can e-mail your Mod (or a download link if the files over 25 Mb) direct to planetphillip.
okay 🙂
Heya. My main goal in 2017 is to be more active in the community. I’ve been around a long time (before Mapcore became CS:GO-core, when Interlopers was actually active, etc) but I’ve always just kinda lurked. Thus, here I am… Also I’d like to actually seriously put time into learning UE4.
I’ll be continuing to grind away at a new Black Mesa map. It’s been nothing but a head ache from the start, and is of questionable quality, but I’ve invested so much time now I’m determined to finish it – come what may!
After that it would be nice to play something again. I’m open to suggestions.
I can’t believe my eyes.
My Mod got an article over at PCGamer…
pcgamer.com
Now I really regret naming the Mod that way haha. I never would have expected it to get this big. People outside the Half-Life modding community expect it to be a Judge Dredd mod because of the name…
Marnamai’s HL2 mod DownFall is now on Steam Greenlight! Please consider voting for it to get on Steam.
If you don’t know Marnamai, he’s a prolific HL2 modder who has made top maps for Ville challenges here like CityStreetsVille, RunThinkShootLiveVille, and LiberationVille – as well as the outstanding Overpass from The Forgotten Journey pack from the Interlopers contest.
My primary goal for this year is to write some new and more modern tools to improve the workflow for designing levels and creating content for GoldSrc. Since I have joined the Sven Co-op community, I have had plans to release maps and sooner or later a series.
I learned a lot last year, more than I had imagined. The wonderful people at Sven Co-op has been a joy to talk with and learn from.
