I have to say I was surprised by the setting. It’s hard not to expect BM maps to be set in BM, but I suppose there’s no reason why they have to be.
The house section of the map is pretty standard stuff and the encounters are simple and almost boring.
Things improve once you get outside, but the best section is the main warehouse, although it’s quite short.
I felt that the whole map lacked realism – rooms with huge creates and only small doors, joins between sections with stark textures edges. The sort of thing that new mappers do, which I presume this author is.
I did quite enjoy playing it but felt that if the map had been smaller with more thought put into fewer sections it would have been better.
See my video playthrough in the main post for my full observations.

Wait what?
It’s for Black Mesa? Then why it uses stock HL2 textures and models?
Srsly, what’s the point? Don’t take me wrong. Black Mesa map, doesn’t have to take place in Black Mesa, but next times use the potential of new assets.
It just doesn’t look like in need of BM to play.
Yeah. I understand a lot of people will be disappointed. I really didn’t want to set it in black mesa and to be honest, i randomly opened up BM hammer and started making something as a test and it grew into this. I would revert it to work in HL2 ep2 but it already uses so many props and textures from BM. I will keep this in mind for next time however! 😉
I think it’s a good reminder of the fact that most of HL2’s materials still exist in Black Mesa. So, to some extent, alternate scenarios are possible, like having HECU in a City 17-like location, or creating a rundown desert town somewhere near Black Mesa.
Yeah. I just tried to be different. I didn’t relies a lot of people would be hung up about it. As i said, i just loaded up BM hammer and made a house and from there, made the full map. If id known it meant so much, i would have made a huge effort to use only BM textures. But i guess its all a learning experience and ill soon get back to making a more BM themed BM map! 🙂
“You father, mother and brother” , I’m pretty sure It’s “Your” 😛
Fixed, thanks.
Some assistance please. I have the paid version of Black Mesa, which I assume is what is required for this map.
I go to install the bm_vengeanceatdusk.bsp file and I have no “maps” folder as a sub to the bms folder. So I make one and put the file there as instructed. It doesn’t appear when in the console in game when typing map bm_ or the full file name, however many other bm_ add on maps for Black Mesa do appear at this point (and are all playable), yet I don’t know where they are on my computer.
What folders do you have in the BMS folder? Have you run the game recently?
Thanks Phillip. No I haven’t run it recently and I think there was a patch/update. I also found my steam library for this game was on a separate hard drive which I had forgot. Got it running now.
Glad to hear it.
For the record, Black Mesa maps you get through Steam Workshop download to steam/steamapps/workshop/content/362890. They used to download to the Black Mesa folders, but this was apparently a change that Valve requested they make, to be consistent with other workshop games. This change was made earlier in the year.
Hmm, you should have something like this:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Black Mesa\bms\maps
A surprisingly long map. You can tell the author got better as it went on because the architecture improves and the battles become somewhat more interesting. It would appear there is no nodegraph, however, so the HECU basically stand around the whole time.
The map has many issues with gameplay language. Assets reused from HL2 do not work the same way, like unbreakable and unmovable crates, wood beams across doors that don’t break, glass doesn’t break, etc. The map isn’t even consistent by its own logic, with water being super deadly in one spot, but perfectly fine in another. And some wood beams over doors are breakable.
Corridors are frequently blocked by cars or junk with invisible walls right in front of them. And, maybe the most egregious problem, none of the HECU drop their weapons or ammo. The first time I went outside, I was completely out of ammo. Fortunately, because there’s no nodegraph, the HECU will patiently stand there while you toss a grenade or run up and crowbar them. But still, this could be better.
So, it is what it is. A learning map to get familiar with some of Black Mesa’s systems. I look forward to the author’s next map.

Thanks for your feedback! I’m glad there are pros like you around who take the time to play amateur maps (Novice in my case!)
Not bad for a (presumably) beginner map. Yes it’s basic and has many technical issues which others have already touched on. However as a one off play through I did sneakily enjoy it and it’s surprisingly long. I think part of my enjoyment came from nostalgia as this map had a very 90’s FPS feel to it in terms of architecture, NPC behaviour and item placement.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. You are correct in presuming i’m a beginner. This was my first single player map (With 2 CSGO maps previously) I still feel i have really let people down by using too many Hl2 textures but Ill try and change things around a bit! 🙂
This map has too many invisible walls for my liking along with other issues. I tried to stand on a chair so I could get into a vent but it turns out you can walk right through the chair. There is a water section that looks like you can swim in it but in fact you die right away. Also the first half of the map you have to fight with only with your pistol and crowbar; it would have been nice to pick up weapons from your enemies after you disposed of them.
There is a clever surprise in one of the rooms that you walk by near the end but I won’t give it away. Nevertheless this is a maybe for me.

Thank you so much for your feedback! I am currently making the map better and updating it. I may put a sign at the water telling the player it is deadly and i will give the player more weapons at the start. I’m still working out what to do about the invisible walls as a lot of them are necessary but i will work something out.
This was like playing a Half-Life1 regular map inside the Source HL2 world! So that was quite weird.
But overall I found gameplay entertaining, though combat a little bit static with those grunts just holding their ground.
The story was also strange, and I guess that would be Gordon Freeman in a very pissed off mood if his family would’ve been kidnapped by the Grunts…
So overall I say this feels like an OK Play it Later BM map.
