When I saw that the original releae had been updated I was quite surprised. PArtly becasue I didn’t know work was being done on it and partly because it has been nearly 6 years since its release.
Visually it is very different and the colour overlays have been repealced with a more natural feel, which is good in some ways but disappointing in others. I felt that the overlays added to the aura of the mod and perhaps even a physical representation of being drunk.
This new version expands minor elements but does not touch the story.
The post scrapyard area felt too big, although without replaying the original, I couldn’t tell you how big that area was.
In some ways I feel that this mod would have been better with a little less combat and slightly more story telling. For example, in the scrap yard, perhaps we could have learnt that John beat hios wife and she came there to seek comfort from its owner, perhaps even developed a relationship with him.
I still loved this release and if I hadn’t been livestreaming it might have felt a deeper connection to the story.
All in a great mod and one you should definitely play.

Great review Phillip! I’ll link this page to my new article. Thanks a lot.
This was an unexpected release of a fantastic and already well known mod, here on PP.
The author has reworked on the aesthetics, the house is even more beautiful than before, a darker ambiance has been set… There is still Those terrific séquences on the gas station and the abandoned warehouse.
I was a bit disappointed that the ending hasn’t changed and/or extended, maybe on Another sequel/update?

Typo in the second paragraph (he’s)
Is anyone else having visual field issues with this mod? It says it’s at 90 FOV but it feels more boxy and squashed, and has given me dizziness while playing which is pretty unusual for a normal FOV like that. I noticed it right off and it didn’t feel right, went to change it, but it just doesn’t get any wider.
Yeah!
I thought It was only me who was experiencing a very low fov.
This may have to do with the angle of the flashlight, instead of the fov. Field of view should be adjustable in the video options.
The first chapter’s visuals don’t need the flashlight at all, this is with the lights on in the house. It got better outdoors in the 2nd and following chapters visually but honestly the visuals and lighting were garish enough as they were. I can’t remember whether it was this ugly in the original, but if it was I probably commented then.
Mod title is wrong. It’s written Sprucescape instead of Sprucecape.
Fixed, thanks.
Nothing really stood out to me in this map. Although some of the puzzles were creative and had me stumped in some areas, the overall product was just about as mediocre as mediocre can get. But if you want to complete a short and straight-forward mod, this one is for you.

As in screen 37, the fence needs to be blown up. I used all of the dynamite barrels from both sides of the fence and it won’t blow-up. Any hints?
Aim high on the fence.
Honestly I can’t say this is any better than the original. The navigation in the third map seems a little different but the rest of it seems the same. The author just stretched what was a good mappack into a mod. If the story had been extended I think it would have been more interesting to me.

I have adjusted this to 40 minutes play time, is that correct?
Yes, thanks
worked on linux. I liked the beginning very much with this drunken feeling in the house…
Well. How to say this?? I really like this mod. You know, to me It felt special since the first release. Possibly because of the sentimental drama references. Also because this mod is one of those that I think is one of it own kind.
You know, The whole spooky environment, and that cold really cold environment feeling is just beautiful, almost an art piece. I also played this in a very cold winter day in my city, so it just felt even more nice.
I also loved the soundtrack in this mod. I absolutely will download each and every song i did listen on it.
Now, its very nice to see this mod beautifully enhanced in HL2 it’s light effects on the textures are perfect, and that giant junkyard is quite unique in HL2 mods. Also is a very fun part to drive with the jalopy.
About the end, well I can say is also very impressive, it was a fantastic art ending when I first played it like 4 years ago, and still feels fresh and beautiful in the present day. The whole implications on that final scene are deep and quite sad. You know that bridge breaking it will always represent a failed love dream coming to a non-reparable end. Feels almost like a love drama movie, but with a psychological meaning.
All in all I loved this mod, is quite unique and nice and entertaining to play.

The link in the description that reads “The Sprucecape Mappack” mistakenly directs to this page rather than the one for the mappack.
Fixed, thanks.
This mod is just great. I don’t know how I haven’t played this before.
The mapping is simply superb. The atmosphere is incredible and the locations are just so real-life-like. The combat is great too, however I never managed to find the pistol.
The story was nice too, however I didn’t really like the ending that much, but that’s just me.
Overall, you should definitely play this mod. It’s one of the best looking HL2 mods out there and the gameplay is just as good too.
The storyline is umm a little different! So i’m a wife beating drunk, right? Okaaaay…. First off, I didn’t care for the stark differences in the times with each part, one moment its day and the next night. And I felt a few more zombies would have been cool in the early garage scene. Not the respawning ones which would be rubbish. I also thought the second part of the dump was overly large but it was also great to have those little huts and a regular surprise, so…
Other than the above, this mod is AWESOME!!!! It truly was a joy to play. I liked the simple puzzle element to begin with and then (wow) the scary garage scene with diner and a broken bridge was class. Like I said above, a few more zombies would have been nice BUT those that came back alive later where REALLY well done. This level scared the c%$#P outta me!!! The graphical effects where tremendous here too, although i’d have liked a more frequent lightning so I wouldn’t rely so much on the flashlight….
The tip / dump areas where ace. A little crude but very enjoyable and I loved plowing through them in my car! However, later on I lost the car in the toxic waste which was annoying but hey, it was better on foot. (if just a bit tooooo big of an area)
I loved the rocky parts later, looked beautiful. Though a few more zombies where needed…
That ending.. lol
I now need to play more from this author. This mod is sometimes a little crude and rough around the edges but overall it was fun, exciting and immensely entertaining. LOVED IT.

Loved the atmosphere, especially the gas station portion. Even the sounds after making a save were creepy…and seem familiar. Was that a sound from Silent Hill?
I did not even read the description of the game, yet the story was made clear by the modder. Well done. Interesting playing as a protagonist you do not want to succeed.
Decent puzzles/tasks which made good use of the space in the map, along with some good red herrings and surprises.
Nice story and nice visual!

Visually it’s very good. The second map was an issue. When you blow the car it ends up right in the road. Without the GG you can’t clear it without ramming it a hundred times. Very frustrating. I was bored by the third map.
I was very surprised by the quality and atmosphere of this mod, what you have here are three incredibly solid maps. This is definitely a must play!

Good story, perhaps too short, but told succinctly. Have some gripes about sometimes maps lacking signs of where to progress, but you can eventually find your way even if it takes a while more
