  1. Phillip says Play It!

Maybe it’s me or maybe the author didn’t test enough on all difficulties but I played on HARD and didn’t die once, if you don’t include my jumping off the bridge at the beginning just to see what happened.

I found this release to be better to look at than play. The lighting up at the beginning was a nice touch and the general atmosphere was well-designed but the gameplay let it down.

For example, in the greenhouse, I was able to sit on a table and not get attacked by the fast zombies. I didn’t find this through trail and error, but the first time I played it.

For 10 minutes of so, it’s not a bad map and I recommend everybody give it a try, who knows, maybe you will enjoy it more than I did.

  2. Overall I liked this little map. There is a decent amount of exploration inside a relatively small space. I enjoyed the atmosphere including some well-timed sound effects. It would have been nice to have the flashlight available but I guess being forced to work in dark places was what the author intended. It’s well worth the amount of time to download and play it.

  3. Maybe?

While the map might be neat, it’s basically unenjoyable without being able to see it. No flashlight? Welp, that means I just kept switching between mat_fullbright 1 and 0. There were plenty of rooms which had decorations and set dressing that I would certainly have appreciated *with proper lighting* but instead, they’re just plunged into complete darkness and thus impossible to see to appreciate. (remembering: I DO have problems with ultra-dark screens, and now that FO4 is out AND Nanowrimo, my desk situation has had to change so I don’t hurt myself with posture while typing – this brings my screens farther out of my ‘brightness’ range so even with the Gamma in game cranked as far as it’ll go, it’s still impossibly dark.)

God mode *on*, after respawning zombies which hadn’t existed in the nooks AND a blocked door which I had *literally* just unblocked. Nonsensical at the very least. I can understand if the zombies had *been there* but they simply spawned behind me?

There would have been plenty of clues and visual hints IF I could have seen them either with a flashlight or with slightly better spot lighting. Since there was nothing else beyond the structure itself, no background map at all on which to put any kind of lighting, I didn’t even see most of the places to go.

Sorry but while this map might have looked pretty otherwise, and maybe even been fun if the buggy zombie spawns were fixed, it was impossible to complete for me without fullbright and god mode.

  4. Play It Later

I really liked this map. I didn’t expect a lot from it, but still.

One thing that was done really well here was the atmosphere. The atmosphere was great, especially in the ending. Mapping-wise there were a few mistakes, like the greenhouse (Far Cry 3, anyone?), where the lighting was a pain in the ass when the zombies started coming. Apart from that though, nothing major.

Overall, I would recommend this map. It’s really fun for 10-15 minutes, and if you’re looking for a map with good atmosphere, then play this one.

  5. Follow my journey as I go down the list of source mods at http://www.runthinkshootlive.com/hl2/

This is the 2nd map on the list.

Unfortunately this journey has come to an end. I put this in my hl2 maps folder and then found out I couldnt launch half life 2 anymore. or episode 2. I think my hl2 installation got headcrabbed.

  6. Think Twice

Fixed my HL2 installation by verifying integrity. I will resume my progress down the list of HL2 mods as indicated by the link above. Now about this map.

Single map for a spooky compo. I wasnt scared at all, actually was annoyed by how they enemies LITERALLY spawn right behind u and doors remain locked until you kill the them. Flashlight is also disabled, and it was extremely annoying getting lost because you couldnt see the ladders in those dark rooms, like 3 times. And there wasn’t anything memorable, except that I’d say the layout and design was not too bad.

    Avoid It!

I didn’t like this at all. Sorry, but I don’t know why, some mappers like to mess with the game dynamics. I mean. Here we have a way too dark map. Badly, badly lit. And besides we are not able to use the flashlight at all!

That detail ruined the whole game play experience to me. And also the paths to follow inside the map were not clear at all. I was not able to cross over a little passage inside a room(showed in screenshot 5), so I had to no clip.

Now, in the little pros I found in this map, is just about the concept design. That Island-fort like was a cool concept, but I’d prefer to play with a better lighting conditions. The place reminded me a little to the Hasima island abandoned town.

  8. Play It Later

This map presents a truly eerie map because your flashlight doesn’t work – the only light you have is the ambient light, or what you are able to turn on manually. Each light leads to the next, but as soon as you turn it on, prepare for some scary encounters. This map offers intricate level design and some nice scares throughout.

  9. Play It Later

A fun little horror map the main twist of which is the absence of flashlight and the lack of light at all. What could’ve been a great mechanic that could make the player shake in fear before turning around each corner, turned out to be a quite badly executed feature.
The encounters with enemies aren’t that hard by themselves but that fact that you can’t see your enemies makes it more irritating than challenging. And the process of looking for an item in a really dark room only makes it even more annoying.
I find the encounter with fast zombies in the greenhouse a really fun and challenging idea (personally, when put in a small area with more than one of these guys, I can get a little bit sweaty) but fighting enemies that take so many shots with a pistol can become boring very quickly, and the fact that you have to fight more with the darkness than with the zombies ruins it for me.
The positive side of this map that could’ve make it more fairly challenging if not for the lighting, in my opinion, is the lack of Health Packs – something that many Half-Life mappers pretty rarely do (there’s always plenty of Health, Energy and Ammunition absolutely everywhere in most of the maps which makes it too easy to play).

  10. Play It Later

Oh well, this map is damn scary. First: you don’t have a flashlight and it’s all dark Second:there is only one medium medkit, so don’t think to survive the entire map at hardif you’re not good Third: the luminosity is set to a lower point than normal!
Ps: you need a second pair of pants
Secret: to survive the fast zombies attack, jump on the table or on the generator! Do this on other maps too!

  11. Maybe?

I thought the look and design were awesome with lots of colours too (in the lit areas). But it’s that ultra dark environment which eventually ruins what could have been… I mean, it’s damn pitch black out lol and that soon gets boring. Especially considering there’s no flashlight… I dunno, but the lighting was good when it was there, but to have zero lighting in other areas was unnecessary imho.

Gameplay is a little lame tbh and I thought it was annoyingly slow much of the time. I didn’t like how doors locked until baddies where killed but more than anything was trying to play in overly dark places without the tools. This made things chore some and even Doom 3 had a flashlight! :p

Good but far, far too dark.

  12. Think Twice

It was DARK. There was almost no lighting at all. You shouldn’t have to bring up the game’s brightness just to see a simple room, nevertheless the entire map! A flashlight would have sufficed…

  13. Avoid It!

    It’s really damn dark.

    Score Sheet

Usage of space and world brushes: 7/10
I liked the design. I thought it was really cool.

    Visuals /10
I don’t know what I saw because it was way too dark

    Gameplay: 0/10
I can’t see anything, so the gameplay was that much harder. Also FLASHING LIGHTS in the greenhouse.

    Final Score: 7/30 – 23%

Final Comments: Avoid it. It’s not fun to play.
