Yes, yes, yes. I’m 6 years late. Well, that’s not strictly true because Curse Episodes used to be listed on the site but I can’t remember why it was removed.
Back in February 2009, Gabor was interviewed on a Podcast 17 show and that was when we had just played the first release.
As far as the mod is concerned, it’s absolutely stunning. Visually it feels right, gameplay is interesting enough to keep you excited. There’s exploring galore and I found a couple of parts quite scary.
It’s not in the Hall of Fame yet but I promise to add it this week.
I know that I didn’t find all the special areas and after the mod finished I restarted from a save and managed to get to a new area and I am sure there are plenty of secrets I missed.
If this mod is new to you, then an amazing time awaits.
One word of advice: Use the Q button to switch weapons. I didn’t use it until this playthrough and the first time I played it I didn’t even knew it existed.
Have fun – lots of it.

Can anyone tell me how to use weapons in this mod? I see there are some holographic weapons used in the gameplay video I saw. How do you use them?
You have two weapons in the mod. One is a “push” one, that allows you to throw stuff at enemies and the other is like a wand, which you use your mouse to swing around. Check the keybindings to see which key is set to swap weapons.
Hi Philip, you didn’t add this mod to hall of fame finally 😛
I haven’t played it, i only wanted to remind it to you.
Yeah I remember playing this mod probably quite soon after it came out in 2009. Back then I had the terrible habit of not reviewing everything I played, but I remember this mod was memorable.
It’s quite tricky to get used to the new dynamics of the gameplay, specially regarding the beam weapon that you can shoot with your hands. I remember that was a WOW reaction back then when I played it.
Now, the mapping is just beautiful and I loved it, because reminded me to some pretty nice Ancient Egypt maps available for HL1. Aesthetically is a masterpiece, because all maps look beautiful and colorful, is just a great rest after we’re used to the same grey HL2 textures all the time.
As I don’t remember the story itself quite much, I possibly replay it. Though I don’t think so, the only thing i remember about is that this mod definitely left me wanting more, and a sequel, which I truly don’t think it will come, though that sequel possibility could be just great, I’ll sure try it.
I remember playing this one when it came out it was just waouw visually brilliant and really immersing
I think, Phillip, at the time it went out it wasn’t fullfilling the criteria you used at that time by not integrating mods that where totally different of the general Half Life universe if you want to go and explore this kind of universe there are a lot of mod that were release at the guildhall
there are also some Half-Life mod especially one made by Kyle George taking place in a kind of candy world if a remember right

Is this version 101 ?? I have it in my archives from 2009!
That’s correct. It says 2009 in the Basic Details.
For Linux you have to: change the gameinfo.txt to fit to the new mods. Then SteamAppID: to 220.
After that rename all files to lowercase. Then you can start and it works perfectly so far…
Fantastic mod with beautiful visuals and interesting gameplay. It took me a while to get the hang of the combat but eventually I got it. It’s easy to get lost in the expanse of this mod but the whole thing is extremely polished. I am sure I missed lots of secrets as well but will definitely be playing this again in the future.

After some playing: it reminds me of Seroius SAM.

Nice mod,the second weapon control was for me pretty hard to understand at first, but in general the mod is amazing, the end is weird, and I hope that the sequel will come soon…

it has a serious sam vibe ^^
Can you explain that? I haven’t played that set of games and can’t possibly see what it would have to do with this. …. Also I should have reviewed this, before now…
I think he means the colours and general brightness. There is also the feeling of running around without much of a plan and killing anything that is front of you.
Huh, well, when I played there was a very distinct set of things to do, in an order which does become apparent if you pay attention. Since I’ve only ever watched like 2 minutes of a Sam and Max game it just doesn’t seem to me anything like it, I was more interested in the beautiful level of detail and depictions of symbols, etc. I very rarely insist my one housemate come look at what I’m playing, since she’s not much of a gamer for this kind of thing, but I had to show her Curse because it was just jaw dropping visually.
Yes, you are right, you do have to do things in the right order, I just meant that it seems less story-driven then Half-Life 2.
The Egypt-style locations are probably what he is referring to.
Also to Zek: Serious Sam is very different than Sam & Max. 🙂
LOL holy crap lol why was I thinking Sam and Max instead hahaha! omg I’m gonna go die now 😀
Follow my journey as I go down the list of source mods at http://www.runthinkshootlive.com/hl2/
This is the 9th one on the list.
3-4 maps of a (presumably unfinished) total conversion mod. Visually it is very similar to serious sam as pointed out above, but gameplay is very different. In fact I don’t think I ever played a game with combat similar to this mod. No tutorials at all so you will have to figure out the game mechanics all by yourself. The maps all have a similar mechanic so hopefully when you figure out one map you figure out all of them. Autosaves are only placed near the portals so if you got pretty far in one map and fall down one of the many pits in the game, well that was only slightly irritating.
Theres some extra game play including several boss battles that you can easily miss if you didnt figure out the general mechanic of this mod, but here are some spoilers if you want to enjoy the full experience.
SPOILER TAG
There are 3 maps, each map has a green room and red room. There are gold scarab buttons hidden in each map that will unlock grates in the green room, and you must find all the buttons to unlock the green room entirely. Jump in the green room and it will corrupt the entire map with EVIL. At this point follow the red line to get to the red room where you can purge the evil from the map. Be careful as some red rooms are guarded by bosses.
At the ending section if you purged all the evil you can access a locked area that will take you to the FINAL BOSS. Hes pretty easy if you arent at like 20 HP or something, but there are potion dispensers there so you won’t be TOO screwed.
Great mod, works seamlessly via Steam, no crashes, no hangups! Multiple endings??? I think I got the bad ending (I won’t tell). Perfect, with many symbols associated with the occult. Neat.
It should be mentioned that you have to install the Source SDK Base 2007 for this to work.
Really like this mod.

I really had fun with this mod, sad to see it was never continued after episode 1.
I finished all the secrets, would have been nice if it gave a special ending but i can’t ask too much from this mod after all it has done.
CURSE is good in concept, but in practice it fails in practice.
Don’t get me wrong, this mod did a great job on custom textures and stuff. Switching stances also was a cool idea for me, but the control was very awkward. You are also locked on to one enemy at a time and there is no way to change target, I think.
I don’t even get the story, like all I do is just wondering around until I find another portal. Hell, there’s no backtracking either.
The majority of the enemy you face are zombies and, on occasions, archers. That makes the game quite a breeze, really.
