There are three areas which contain different enemies.
Pass each one and progress to the next area.

This is a very simple map and probably representative of the type of map we will see for the next few months.
This could have easily been built in HL2 and looked the same – yes the NPCs are better and the weapons etc, but the basic visuals and gameplay haven’t really changed.
It’s just a run through various boxy rooms with nothing to recommend it.

It does what it says on the tin. It’s a dungeon crawler. You go from room to room eliminating enemies. I’m not sure what was wrong with the version Phillip played, but mine was not fullbright as his screenshots were. It’s a very basic map, but not an awful one. It’s playable. It is, however, in dire need of autosave points.
This map is also a good illustration of how frustratingly inconsistent Black Mesa’s Shotgun is. Why is it that sometimes, a double-blast can kill a Bullsquid from halfway across the room and yet not at point-blank range? Why do some Houndeyes succumb to a single blast, and others don’t even flinch at the same distance? It’s things like this which make it a useless, undependable weapon, even in the main campaign.
Once you get the MP5, the map becomes more fun. Course, by that point, you’re also facing Vortigaunts which pose no threat on their own. The Houndeyes, which are your first adversaries in this level and where you’re forced to use the Shotgun, are far nastier. Especially since Black Mesa’s Houndeyes don’t seem to “take turns” attacking the player, so they’ll take your health down from 80 to 0 in seconds.

Thank Headcrabs! I thought it was me.
No, it’s not just you. The Shotgun is terrible. Given the great examples in HL, HL2 and even HL: Source, it’s baffling why Black Mesa’s Shotgun turned out the way it did.
I would say that Black Mesa has many examples of stuff that was rewritten, often to its detriment, for no apparent reason.
Now that you mention it, blasting a vort in the head point-blank sometimes killed it and sometimes not. I guess Didn’t think about it at the time because I was so blown away by the rest of the mod.
Phillip, I just want to reiterate that this map does have lighting, even though your screenshots are fullbright.
Either you got a version of the map where lighting wasn’t built correctly (it has been updated at least once since then) or you were trying to play the map in LDR mode which BM does not support.
Well, this is fun. I tried a couple of days ago and got the map with the lighting. I launched it today and still the same. I will delete the VPK and see what happens, but if this is how buggy the workshop is going to be, I’m a bit nervous. Of course, this could be the map’s fault.
I was going to wait until Xen was released to buy BM but the fact that maps are being released for it makes me want to get it as soon as possible.
That was my initial plan, but as you say with maps being released as we speak it seems a good idea to get it sooner.
This was so far a bit better than the other releases apart from Bravado, that I’ve played.
Yeah I know the layout is absolutely linear and the combat was very predictable, but I certainly enjoyed this one a bit.
Is also a perfect way to get familiarized with the BM shotgun and MP5.
Also is great to play in some break you have.
