This is an interesting study in how a modder creates the same idea 16 years later.
The two levels are essentially the same thing but obviously look significantly different.
Ultimately, there’s not enough substance to recommend more than a MAYBE.
You’ll probably have fun with both and that’s perhaps the most interesting aspect, yes, they look different but is there that much difference in how much fun you had playing them?

I played this release just as soon as it came out on Urby’s profile.
The idea is cool: the author recreated a level he’d made not long after HL1 had been released, and with this we can see how much he’s learned over the years.
It’s simply a 15 minute rush through 2 maps, in which the first is a fat block and and the second has all the charm we’d expect form a mod this days.
Just play it now, learn something yourself, and get inspired by how much someone can learn if they keep working.
I’m sure you’ll find some fun in it, like I did.
Urby, you had your fun, now get back to working on The Core 😉

that was fun, maybe some others would be willing to dust of an old work and rework it a bit.
The installation instructions are from Sky Mesa.
Thanks, that’s what you get from doing two things at once.
A basic, decent mappack.
The combat is nothing really special as it consists of 2 weapons only. The mapping was nice, but some huge areas felt really empty, as they had no enemies in them. Oh, and BTW, it’s VERY short (3-4 mins), so it will end pretty quickly. Also, what the hell is this message at the end?
Overall, if you want to find something to kill some time with, then play this.
The message at end was just an apology for releasing something that wasn’t my mod, The Core. A couple of people are waiting on that.
I didn’t find it enjoyable as a game and it took little time. I can understand the purpose of making it.

Just reporting Map Tap failure: When i install directly via Map Tap HL1 is launched and then it says: map doesn’t found on server.
This is weird because in the past, i just installed and play via map tap just fine.
That’s strange. If it happens with another download, please contact me directly.
OK Roger That.
I think this is a clever way to re make some older maps. I mean, If some mappers would do the same concept map they did back in the early 2000’nds or late 90’s, how many changes and polished can be now 15 later??
Well this is a cool example of that. in my opinion the rebuilt map of this 2015 is way better than the first. Is interesting to see how a mapper can evolve and enhance his skills 15 years later, you can notice that in the details and the architecture or layout of the map indeed.
Overall i enjoyed this little but nice map pack. And my only complaint is about the finale, i felt it quite unsatisfactory, because when i reach the end and read: “sorry this is not the core”, i thought i had missed something in the map, some button or trigger. Then by reading the comments in here, i realized that was a kind of easter egg related to another Urby’s project which is work in progress.
Anyway, i liked this, is a perfect play it later, and i wish luck to Urby in all his upcoming projects.

I did like seeing the great improvements in even the simplest of map ideas. Good work on an update, even if there’s very little to ‘do’ in it. … I died, lol. Freakin grunt firing bees at me.

that’s funny, i had a save right at that spot with not much health and kept trying to get past, finally had to notarget.
This is actually slightly outdated now. I updated the version submitted to moddb and twhl with more health kits and autosave points. 🙂
Please submit it to me!! There’s a submit link on the grey menu.
Sorry, didn’t realise i could resubmit. Sent to you now 🙂
Both downloads now use the updated file.
Not too much of general interest here. I think mappers will probably get more out of this than non-mappers.
Basically it’s a brief insight into the progression of a mapper. Gameplay is pretty basic and you won’t get lost or stumped. It does make me think about my first handful of maps back in the day, what they could look like now.

A nice homage to see how skills of a certain individual in this case Urby the mapper increased over the years. That plus new compilers etc. which also allowed for greater looking maps etc.
Game play wise it’s in both cases some classic shoot em up map & then the same again slightly more polished. If you’re a fan of these before and after things then you might enjoy it otherwise it’s simple good old classic 1999 action..
