  1. Phillip says Play It!

Now, this is certainly not the greatest HL1 mod released and I did consider making it a CONSIDER IT, but to put it simply, I enjoyed it.

There’s nothing amazing about it and some areas looks a little bland, whilst others are more detailed, but overall it was fun to play.

It’s a mod that takes you forward and then has you retrace your steps.

I was a little disappointed that it ended, so that’s one of the reasons for my PLAY IT recommendation. That adn the fact that there’s not much else about for HL1 at the moment.

  2. Play It Now!

A fun little piece of HL1 nostalgia that reminded me of other mods from many years ago. Not a perfect piece of work but still enjoyable. I did encounter a few issues though. One time I ran into a corridor to what looked like like an exit and, when nothing happened right away, I ran out again. Unfortunately the next sequence started where I was supposed to still be in the corridors and I died as soon as the next map loaded. Also, I managed to get trapped in the area with the power generator with no way to get back out. So it’s not perfect but still a fun way to spend a few minutes.

    Maybe?

This was a decent set of maps that were fun enough to play through but overall just doesn’t stand out at all. It feels very by-the-numbers and doesn’t really do Black Mesa justice.

The first main fault with this mod are that it just doesn’t feel like Black Mesa. Yes it resembles Black Mesa, and there are some areas that are well-built and attractive, on the whole it’s just lifeless. The opening areas are clearly derivative of Anomalous Materials, but why AM worked was that Black Mesa was full of life and activity and made you feel just like a normal guy who’s late to work. In Fight for Life, this whole area is pretty empty and devoid of anything interesting. Yes, it’s populated by scientists walking around, but as soon as they say something to you they just stop in their tracks and sit there for evermore.

The second drawback in my opinion is that it’s just too easy. While there is a nice ramp-up in enemies faced and weapons acquired, health and especially HEV batteries are just everywhere. The only time my health dropped below 85 was when I fell down the vent into a room full of zombies, a designed trap that will incidentally steal a ton of your health in the fall alone.

In all, it’s a nice Black Mesa-themed set of maps that will take you about a half hour. A decent distraction but there’s much better out there.

  4. Play It Now!

A decent map, for the HL platform. I liked it too, except for including two of the most frustrating jumps in HL 😉

    Play It Now!

Well, I played this one, and I liked it overall. Though the first parts where you’re inside BM or if that facility is Black Mesa…. whatever, that indoors part, is at the beginning way too dark, and the first level felt way too boxy with too many narrow areas that sometimes make difficult to move.

Apart from that part, once you have got thru it and found the first grunts, well things technically starts to get better, as you found better enlightened maps.

Battles along the whole maps were OK and I have to say I got myself a little bit scared when the zombies got me in a complete dark area surrounded with boxes, which I mention because it was a detail I liked.

The trip feels nice and overall it feels great once you have reached the surface, because it really gets claustrophobic down there in those very narrow maps.

To be a Russian mod, which many of them, most of the times are confuse and with very bad quality; this was a decent mod overall, I liked, and as I am not a fullest quality map obsessed I’d say its nice to play and got entertained for around 20 minutes of gameplay or maybe more…

  6. Play It Now!

I played this mod back when it was released in ModDB. This is an amazing one.

The combat was great. I also liked the part that Hec mentioned with the zombies in the dark.

The lighting was a little bit dark when the facility gets destroyed, but then gets better.

Though, there are 2 jumps that I didn’t really like.

    Anyway, very good mod.

  7. Maybe?

This mod is actually a map pack consisting of 5-6 big maps with a few small additions.
As Unq said, it feels lifeless because it’s trying to be atmospheric using dim and blinking lights but fails to do so and just ends up as dark and “soulless”. That would mainly be the lack of a background sound’s cause.
As for the modifications themselves, it’s just a few random models: a gas mask on a crate on a dark room, doesn’t add to anything at all. The zombie sounds didn’t need to be replaced, they almost sound like they hunger cheesy.
The level design borrows heavily from Half-Life 1 (obviously) but there are some bits that are replicas of office complex, we’ve got hostiles, forget about freeman and even some of the doors are copied. The first map is set up nicely, but could use more of half-life’s feel : scientists talking with you by scripting, telling you where to go or why you are placed in this world. You start out with nothing, figure out you need a hazard suit to continue and go on about your day (of slaughtering everyone).
Another complaint from the gameplay perspective would be that the first box puzzle can be easily bugged (stick the box in the acid before pressing that button and you’re stuck). You can also get stuck in a later level behind some fire doors (as you could in Half-Life’s “We’ve got hostiles”).
The fights aren’t that well thought out (many headcrabs lined up or around excessive amounts of zombies in a room with nothing but a crowbar to fight them isn’t scary or fun, it gets tedious. Also it gets too easy with all the ammo you find, especially the load of pistol ammo you get before even finding the pistol.
Since I have only pointed out the negative parts of the mod, there is one jump just after you go through that series of locked doors and into some ventilation shaft. Once you go up the ladder you can end up killed if you don’t crouch properly. I don’t think a good design is one that forces you to strafejump.
The maps do get better, as far as fights go. There is no narrative, you don’t even have an identity, due to the lack of NPC interraction.
I would give it 4 stars but the lack of proper sound and lighting ruined the black mesa feel for me. It’s competent mapping for a mediocre design.

  8. Play It Now!

Zombie custom voice isn’t the greatest but the mod was great.

  9. Maybe?

Meh, this one is okay to me. I have no words on the level design. The combat is too easy, I feel like the ending is rushed.
