  1. Phillip says Maybe

What better way to start the OpposingForceNovemberFest than with a new map? Well, with a new map that is good!

Unfortunately, this isn’t that great. The real shame is that it has some nice elements but is let down by what seem to be faulty or buggy triggers.

The first part is a little strange but eventually you work your way down to the real action.

The transformation of a room into a xen area is pretty cool but just after that I couldn’t go any further. I had to resort to noclipping through the “Maintenance” door. and even then I couldn’t get back out again.

Definitely could have been more fun if everything had worked.

  2. Think Twice

This seems like more of a test of ideas than something really playable. Some of these “ideas” are quite interesting, such as “holographic” enemies and transforming areas into Xen environments. However for such a small map it is very buggy, like Phillip I had to noclip to see all the areas. There is voice acting, but not in English, perhaps this would have given a better understanding of what was going on.

As it stands, this is one for completists only.

If you want fun, look elsewhere!

The author must have had a few too many vodka’s before making this!

What can I say that was interesting about this? The ghost/holographic truck and the transform to Xen, but that’s about all!

To really scrape for something I ran “Klabautermann” through Google Translate and it comes out as “ship’s kobold”, kobold is a German sprite!! Maybe it is how the author saw the map, who knows?

  4. Think Twice

This map is kind of hard to talk about without just talking about separate segments. There are parts that show ambitiousness but there are other parts where the mapper seem liked he didn’t even care.

This seems like a map that someone made where they threw everything into it. The holograms were a cool idea but weren’t used to a good effect.

The First 3rd Person segment was unneeded but it didn’t get in the way too much. The 2nd one on the other hand got in the way and you could trigger it in the middle of the action so you couldn’t see what you were shooting.

This map has the infamous “Yellow Flies” where a bunch of yellow dots fly around an enemy if it is placed too close to a wall.

I’m not sure if the author intended this or not but only 1 of the squad-mates would actually follow you. The rest would say “This is a restricted area Corporal!” which is what they say in the Training Room.

Some of the sequences do work but you have to wait awhile for them to show up (like with the Maintenance area). I liked what he did with using the Lambda symbol to show that there are secrets like in Shephard’s Adventures.

Overall this map had some good ideas but just left a bad taste in my mouth when it came to the other parts.

  6. Avoid It!

It starts and for one minute we listen for the dialogue which has two fatal flaws: it’s in Russian and it’s so hard to hear it that even if you speak Russian you won’t understand almost anything.

We exit the elevator and the camera switches to above the ceiling for no reason. I thought that it’s a non-interactive cutscene and wasted the second minute due to that.

The design is strange. There is gigantism (big power switch, big wall keyboard). Then some guards are crushed by transparent truck, then we fight transparent alien slaves. Looks like the design tries to be good, but fails.

Another camera switch. Bad idea, because it allows player to see that night vision is actually a light that glows around the character.

Then we take the elevator down. The green liquid very quickly takes all health and armor. Very original.

After that the design becomes better. But the gameplay is still boring – we kill alien slaves which spawn on same place. In the room with a lot of soldiers and a laser gun I spent some time, but nothing happened. I went back and found a room where the teleporter breaks the ceiling, showing Xen sky, and then parts of Xen world slowly appear. Wow.

But where to go? Nothing’s happening. I found a hole in the floor which led to displacer. Looks like we’re supposed to use it to teleport away, but there’s not enough ammo. Also, it’s easy to accidentally get stuck.

Then, another teleportation happened, it opened a way to advance, but also created a wall, and since I happened to be in the room with the turret, I had to use noclip. Game breaking bug. At that time, the speech from the beginning repeated a few times. Annoying bug.

I pressed the five buttons on the wall, and nothing happened. I tried again and again, and the screen became red for several seconds. After that the room with medic became locked and soldiers started to say that it’s a restricted area. Urgh. The gameplay is still bad: monsters spawned infinitely on same places until I ran out of health.

After that I explored the map with noclip and didn’t find any new areas, so looks like this is the end.

Bad voice acting. Boring gameplay. Bugs, some of them game-breaking. This mod is unplayable. I hated it, and I don’t recommend wasting time on it. Avoid.

    Avoid It!

This map wins for the sheer number of times I said “What the hell?” It’s a totally weird experience but not in a good way at all. It’s just very odd without much direction, and full of bugs (like the sudden wall appearing that can get you or your squad stuck), and annoyances like infinite enemies teleporting in and radioactive goo that sucks half your health in an instant. This map just should not have been released the way it is.

I didn’t find much worthwhile in this map at all. The only thing that held any interest for me is the room where the Xen infestation seems to grow and take over the room, but even that is not worth playing this map just to see. Otherwise, it’s a total mess of unnecessary camera sequences, flashing lights, and weird screen fades to white and orange that hold way too long.

I can’t recommend this map for any reason. I feel bad for you guys that spent 20+ minutes on this one.

    Avoid It!

And I thought many said “J2000” map was horrible, well at least that one was a one fixed maze with few ennemies, but here, oh god!!, a total mess, stupid spawn ennemies everywhere and the worst of all triggers that didn’t work at all!!, besides a terrible guy talking to me in russian, i’m not russian so go to heck!!! I don’t even care what he was saying, I guess it was important because anythyng worked here, as for the 25min, those were because I used noclip in order to explore the whole thing up and down…

  9. Maybe?

This is indeed a very bugged and unfinished map. Still despite that I really enjoyed it. Because it has some really awesome scripts in it showing you how the rooms are changing into a Xen environment. That alone made it worth while for me.

The people are right though you should probably avoid it.

  10. Think Twice

It was a fairly bad experience, from game breaking bugs to having no indication of where to go, this map was bad. The overall concept saves it, the showing of how Xen can hostility take over is a cool concept that I wish to see more of.

  11. Maybe?

So, I just played this map and have figured out how to complete it. The main problem is that you should rely on an information from voice acting to finish the map properly, but it’s too quiet to allow you to make out speaking words directly in the game (and they are in russian). So I just give you a clue, if you want to try. In the beginning just wait until the lift comes up to leave it. On a lower level wait for all friendly soldiers to get their positions near maintenance door before you continue. Then don’t let the welder soldier die (because you need his help) and don’t press the fifth button until you mount a machinegun in its’ place (otherwise respawning aliens bury your game progress). Other things worked fine for me. In overall, I liked the mapping and interactive elements of the gameplay on this map.

  12. Avoid It!

It seems like the map had some interesting ideas here and there, but the execution was very poor. From annoying third-person cameras, bugged triggers and no clear way to go this map is too confusing to really enjoy. It has some voice acting but since it’s in Russian it’s impossible to understand for most players. Terrible map.
